The purpose of this article is to examine the internal migration of a person burnt out by an urban air raid. With the expansion of air raids on Japan's urban centers during the war, a large number of civilians were burnt out of their homes. Therefore, the government pushed forward a plan to have such people emigrate to farm villages. However, such people have so far not been studied in historical research. We carried out an interview investigation in a farm village in Hokkaido to which such people migrated. Therefore, in this report, we want to consider the local emigration of a person burnt out by an urban air raid based on interview data.

This study examines the formation of the narrative of 'Hatta Yoichi' in the post WWII period. Hatta Yoichi, a Japanese engineer who undertook the development project of Kanantaishu and built the biggest dam in Asia during the Japanese Colonial period of Taiwan, has been introduced as "Japanese who loved Taiwan" and as a symbol of Japan-Taiwan friendship. In this study I analyze the transcripts of the interviews I conducted with the Chia-Nan Irrigation Association, Hatta Gishi Fusai wo Shitai-Taiwan to Yuko no Kai (the Association of honoring Mr. and Mrs Hatta and having friendship with Taiwan) and presidents of Taiwan, Ma Ying-jiu, Chen Shui-bian and Lee Teng-hui from 2007 to 2009. I reveal that the discourse of 'Hatta Yoichi' has been formed and transformed under the impact of the politics of Japan-Taiwan relationship.

The town of Taiji in Wakayama Prefecture has a history of hunting cetaceans that dates back hundreds of years. Over the last half century, a group of local fishermen have regularly hunted dolphins and small whales for slaughter or sale to aquariums, which has drawn criticism and protests from mainly western activists. This criticism coalesced into a global prohibition regime that broke into the mainstream with the scathing documentary The Cove, which won an Academy Award in 2010. Despite widespread international support for this regime to end Taiji’s dolphin hunts, they have continued with strong domestic support. This study examines why the global prohibition regime against Taiji’s dolphin hunts failed to take root in Japan, through the voices of those that were in the town for its early stages.

Albinism is a rare genetic condition, resulting in the malfunction of producing the melanin pigment in the eyes, skin, and hair. A person with albinism has visual impairment, extreme sun sensitivity, and distinctive physical appearance. The symptom is very stable and will not become serious, so this condition cannot be considered a matter of life and death. In addition, there are bare minimum supports in order to avoid institutional and structural disadvantages. People with albinism have not been able to refer to any model stories and have been forced on bearing or coping with their troubles alone. Though their coping strategies are various and optional, they are ranked by whether they can contribute toward the members of the community or they have had to conform to the expectations of the society. This article will analyze interviews with an albino woman in order to focus on her coping strategies. She looks on her efforts made without exposing and explaining her identity, and then regards these strategies as norms. Therefore, she has lived in comfort by maintaining silence and liberated herself from the terms of ranking the coping strategies through her "going my way" strategy of caring for herself first of all.

Though it is a known fact that Naha citizens who evacuated to Northern Okinawa suffered severe famine during the battle of Okinawa and the early US occupation period, detailed situations of the damage still remain unveiled. This is because their evacuation during the war and forced relocation afterward have been told and recorded separately for different time periods. Their dispersion as a result of repeated relocation also made it difficult to see the whole picture. This article focuses on the famine among Naha citizens during these periods and describes their overall migration experiences transversally across the years, illuminating the situation that the poor and fallen food supply system of the occupation forces led to many deaths. Whereas returning home for people from areas other than Naha was the start of “reconstruction,” for Naha citizens, their processes of returning home were a series of desperate struggles to survive.

Since the collapse of the socialist state, it has been common for Mongolians to engage in commercial activity. In the socialist era, however, commercial activity was thought to be immoral, and people who engaged in business were condemned as "resellers." A drastic change in morality regarding commercial activity has occurred, and this poses certain questions, for example: has the socialist-era conception of morality regarding commerce disappeared completely? How has the introduction of the free market economy influenced the understanding of commerce in Mongolia? By analyzing the life story of one trader, I illustrate the state of commerce in the socialist period and the transfiguration of ethical discourse that has occurred in contemporary Mongolia. My findings show that the moral justification for contemporary commerce takes the form of historical interpretations that reconfigure traders' reputed notoriety, and that furthermore, there is a discourse of cursing traders engendered by envy.

In Japanese, “Tojisha” means “the person concerned”. The author, who once had a long-term experience of Hikikomori (Social withdrawal), now conducts research on Hikikomori. As a part of this research, this time, the author analyzes a dialogue between the author and another Hikikomori. The theme of the dialogue is about “Hikikomori Studies”. However, before the dialogue took place, the idea of “Hikikomori Studies” was just nothing more than the author’s self-righteous idea. And, it was also an idea that excludes all but the Hikikomori parties. After the dialogue, the author hopes to change the form of “Hikikomori Studies” into another form for thinking with the people who are not “Tojisha” but are interested (They’re called “Kyojisha”). In addition to the analysis of the dialogue, this paper also provides a discussion based on the author’s auto-ethnography.

This paper considers the actual situation and social role of maid as an occupation in Okinawa under the U.S. rule by newspapers, publications of the Ryukyu government and interviews with 13 experienced maids living in Okinawa City. The research shows that, at first, maid worked mainly in the house of American officers and their families. They were paid little, Sometimes got high-end items as a gift and played social role as a popularizer of American culture in Okinawa Society. After that, through economic growth and diffusion of American culture, they lost this social role and changed their workplaces to barracks where ordinary soldiers lived in the base. Therefore, maid became a job for just getting money.

Roughly, the area that the Okinawan people have settled is classified into two, which are due to Pre-War settlement by migrant workers and the post-war repatriation from overseas. In modern Japanese society Okinawan people are newcomers, who have come together to form the "Okinawan" settlement. In doing so they endured the hard life on the mainland. However, they as the workforce have contributed to the development of modern Japan. Housing is a group of strategies, which has emphasized the structure of discrimination. As a consequence, the Okinawan people have pushed the return movement to Japan. Ethnicity was an important point for the organization and establishment of the Okinawan People's Congress.
