This paper considers the state and parameter estimation problems for nonlinear dynamical systems by using the Unscented Kalman filter (UKF). Since unlike the extended Kalman filter (EKF), the UKF does not require Jacobians of nonlinear transformations, we show that the UKF can be used together with the higher order Runge-Kutta approximation. We then derive a Runge-Kutta based UKF algorithm for nonlinear dynamical systems. Numerical studies show that the Runge-Kutta based UKF provides better numerical results compared with EKF and UKF algorithms coupled with the Euler approximation.

Two types of ambiguity are recognizable in Dempster and Shafer's theory of evidence. One is the ambiguity of the system itself and the other is the ambiguity of human knowledge or information about the system. In this paper, from this point of view, the property for measuring the ambiguity of the system and the property for measuring the ambiguity of human knowledge or information are discussed. A global measure of information which satisfies both of these properties is proposed. The unicity of the, proposed measure is proved when it must be an extension of Shannon entropy. The soundness of this measure of information is confirmed by a simple experiment.

To help users select and understand people while searching for them, we present a method of assigning Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC), which is a system of library classification numbers, to people on the web. By assigning NDC numbers to people, we can assign not only labels to people but also build a NDC-based people-search directory. We use a relative index in NDC, which lists the related index terms attached to NDC. We count the number of relative index terms contained in the titles of web pages (HTML files) and assign the top five NDC9 numbers to people. We developed a prototype of a people-search directory by assigning NDC9 numbers to HTML files that were manually classified from web people-search results. We evaluated the usefulness of our approach by comparing four methods and six documents and found that our method (extracting relative index terms) from the titles of web pages outperformed other methods and documents.

For a serial linkage mechanism, the kinematic relationship between the end effector and the joint angles is nonlinear. The kinematics highly affects the dynamics of the mechanism near singular configurations where the relationship is singular. In this paper, we examine dynamic characteristics of singular configurations for a two-link robot arm, and show that the singular configurations are advantageous in reducing the joint torques necessary to achieve the task of pulling a heavy object.

For the purpose of implementing the coordinated traffic signal control, urban road networks in Japan are divided into several sub-areas. Each sub-area consists of a series of signal intersections. The traffic signal timing is optimized within each sub-area and reflects the local traffic situation. Since there is no well-established method of decomposing a traffic network into sub-areas, the decomposition is determined by skillful engineers based on their experience. This paper proposes a new method of decomposition, which is based on an effectiveness index reflecting the traffic delay and the topological structure of the sub-area network. To evaluate the performance of our approach, simulation experiments are carried out for an actual road network. The results show that the decomposition obtained by our method outperforms the conventional decomposition in terms of the employed performance index.

移動車両のダイナミクスはnon-holonimicな拘束を持つ運動方程式で表わされるため, 一般のロボットのように容易に制御系を構築することができない.ここでは非線形制御理論を用いて車両の軌道を制御する方法を提案する.具体的には非線形制御理論における厳密な線形化手法と, 時間軸変換を用いて移動車両の直線経路追従制御のためのコントローラを設計し, さらに車両が曲がり角を曲がるときや, 車両の車庫入れなどに有効な車両の移動計画について述べる.

Evolutionary Programming (EP) belongs to a class of general optimization algorithms based on the model of natural evolution. EP has also been applied to real-valued function optimization since the early 90's. However, recent research results have proved that EP is not so robust as expected; EP performs very well only when the lower bound of strategy parameters is adjusted to each problem. In order to overcome this difficulty, an extended EP, called Robust EP (REP), is proposed. A major feature of REP is that genetic drift is introduced as another source of changing strategy parameters. Computer simulations are conducted in order to illustrate the robust performance of REP against the lower bound on a set of popular benchmark problems. Some evolutionary characteristics of REP are also clarified by calculating basic statistical values.

This paper describes how people establish or fail to establish long-run cooperation in the Prisoner's Dilemma Network (PDN), where subjects are allowed to nominate a subject with whom they want to play the Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) game at the beginning of each round. We have done a series of experiments with undergraduates and computer simulations of the PDN games. In the experiments most subjects either continued to play the PD game cooperatively with the same partner or never played the PD game cooperatively in the long run, and those who were more cooperative earned more. Since the simulations reproduced the results of the experiments, we can guess the subjects' strategies, which were not as apparent and controllable as the programs of agents.
