The labrid genus Suezichthys Smith, 1958 includes 11 valid species, four of which have been recorded from the Japanese waters. Three specimens (125.2–137.7 mm standard length) of the Northern Rainbow Wrasse Suezichthys notatus (Kamohara, 1958) were collected from Tosa Bay and the East China Sea. These specimens possess the following characters: dorsal-fin rays IX, 11; anal-fin rays III, 10; scale rows above lateral line 2 1/2; lateral-line scales 25, each with unbranched laterosensory canal tube; and dark brownish blotches on head and body above pectoral fin. Suezichthys notatus, distributed in scattered localities of the eastern Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, has been recorded only from Okino-shima island, Kochi Prefecture, on the basis of a holotype in the Japanese waters. Therefore, the present specimens represent the second records of the species from Japan.

A questionnaire of the use of discriminatory Japanese animal names was conducted among the physically and/or mentally handicapped persons and their supporters. Of 178 respondents, only 35 (19.7%) had already known the problem of discriminatory Japanese animal names, but 44 (24.7%) found this form of discrimination problematic or hateful. Ninety-six (53.9%) of them agreed to renaming of the mekura-nezumi ("blind rat"=mole rat), one of the typical discriminatory Japanese animal names. Renaming of non-typical discriminatory Japanese names, such as ahoudori ("fool bird"=albatross) and namakemono ("idle person"=sloth), drew fewer positive responses. Quantification II was used to detect some relationships between the respondents and their personal traits. Quantification III was adopted to examine some relationships among the questions through the attitudes of the respondents.

Leeches (subclass Hirudinida) are very famous as blood-suckers. But taxonomic studies of leeches in Japan have been scarcely advanced after Dr. Asajiro Oka's death. In addition, Japanese morphological terms of leeches have been also confused for a long time. Therefore, this paper clarifies their Japanese morphological terms with briefly reviewing their morphology for the purpose of improving the taxonomic studies of leeches in Japan. Leeches possess two suckers and 34 somites with subdivided annuli. They have eyes and an anus on dorsal, and a male and female gonopore on ventral. Their internal morphology, such as digestive system or reproductive system, is as important as their external morphology for the taxonomy of leeches. Haematophagous species have crop and intestinal ceca for storing and digesting blood. In contrast, macrophagous taxa, like Erpobdelliformes, have simple tubular digestive system. They have the male and female reproductive system located ventral to the digestive system. Each Japanese term is connected with English equivalents and illustrations in this paper in order to prevent further confusion of the Japanese morphological terms.

From 2012 to 2021, bird surveys were carried out from Kyushu to Hokkaido, Japan, including a zoo, to find feather mites (Analgoidea Trouessart & Mégnin, 1884 and Pterolichoidea Gaud & Atyeo, 1978) from raptors including owls. In this study, we detected eight feather mite species as following: Glaucalges tytonis Dabert, Ehrnsberger & Dabert, 2008, Hieracolichus nisi (Canestrini, 1878), Kramerella bubonis (Lönnfors, 1937), Kramerella aprotuberantia Dubinin, 1953, Dermonoton longiventer (Mégnin & Trouessart, 1884), Petitota aluconis (Buchholz, 1869), Pseudalloptinus aquilinus (Trouessart, 1884) and Pseudalloptinus milvulinus (Trouessart, 1884).Two of the mite species, G. tytonis and Ps. aquilinus, were only sampled from bird hosts born in the zoo of Japan but they probably originated from oversea. The five of the eight species, Hi. nisi, K. bubonis, K. aprotuberantia, D. longiventer and Pe. aluconis were first reported in Japan. Among them, Hi. nisi was detected only from endangered bird host species Aquila chrysaetos (Linnaeus, 1758)(EN: Endangered). For the mite species, it is important to examine the status of their populations to consider the extinction risk in Japan, because they may be threatened with extinction simultaneously with the decline of the host populations in the future. Three species of mites, G. tytonis, D. longiventer, Hi. nisi were first reported from the hosts Bubo bubo (Linnaeus, 1758), Strix uralensis Pallas, 1771, Haliaeetus albicilla (Linnaeus, 1758), respectively. The Ps. milvulinus was also the first reported from the hosts Buteo japonicus Temminck & Schlegel, 1844 and A. chrysaetos.

Two specimens (201.6–205.9 mm standard length) of Hippocampus spinosissimus Weber, 1913 (Gasterosteiformes: Syngnathidae), previously recorded from the Indo-West Pacific from India east to the Philippines, north to Taiwan, and south to northern Australia, were collected at a depth of 20 m off Tanega-shima Island, Osumi Islands, Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan. These specimens, described here in detail, represent the first records from Japan and the northernmost record for the species. A new standard Japanese name “Tamayori-tatsu” is proposed for the species.

Brachylaimoidea Joyeux and Foley, 1930 includes seven families, and most of them use terrestrial mollusks as intermediate hosts. Among them, trematodes of the genus Brachylaima Dujardin, 1843 (Brachylaimidae Joyeux and Foley, 1930) use terrestrial mollusks as both the first and second intermediate hosts. Nine species of Brachylaima have been reported in Japan, and five of them were recently described with their DNA barcodes based on the nuclear 28S ribosomal RNA and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene. High specificity of each species to the first intermediate host suggests the diversity of trematodes of Brachylaima including undiscovered species. Panopistidae Yamaguti, 1958 is also a family of Brachylaimoidea, but its taxonomic position in the superfamily is uncertain, because the DNA barcodes of only one species were deposited. In addition, some genera such as Michajlovia Pojmańska, 1973, Urogonimus Monticelli, 1888, and Urotocus Looss, 1899 are treated as incertae sedis because of the lack of genetic data of related species. Additional sampling from the intermediate host snails and the final host and phylogenetic analyses are needed to solve the problems in the taxonomy of Brachylaimoidea.

More than 1,300 species of fishes have been reported from the Japanese side of the Sea of Japan. However, occurrence records for a great number of these species are not documented by voucher specimens, rendering estimates of the diversity of fishes from this region unclear as to their reliability. Given this situation, ichthyologists at the Maizuru Fisheries Research Station of Kyoto University are central to a research group aiming to provide a more reliable estimate of the diversity of the fish fauna of this region that is based on a reproducible data such as voucher specimens. Here we provide some biogeographic (24 species) and taxonomic (2 species) notes as a preliminary report towards this goal. As a result of new biogeographical findings, 10 species are confirmed from this region for the first time, and the distributional ranges of 14 other species are extended to the east. Most of these 24 species are not residents in the Sea of Japan, rather they are migratory species likely to have drifted from the southward via the Tsushima Warm Current. An unidentified congrid species, Ariosoma sp. and an undescribed cynoglossid species, Symphurus sp., were collected off Kyoto Prefecture. Exact identification of the former species, and a description and formal naming for the latter species, will be the subject of studies conducted in the near future.

The dicrocoeliid trematode Lutztrema attenuatum (Dujardin, 1845) has been reported from its definitive hosts, passerine birds worldwide, whereas its larvae have never been detected in natural fields. In this study, 41 adults of Lu. attenuatum were obtained from dead specimens of Turdus pallidus Gmelin, 1789 and T. eunomus Temminck, 1831, and the partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene and nuclear 28S rDNA were determined from one of the specimens as DNA barcodes. Furthermore, during a land snail survey in Tokyo, Japan on 11 August 2021, dicrocoeliid sporocysts and cercariae were detected from the achatinid Allopeas satsumense (Pilsbry, 1906). The partial COI sequence of the sporocysts showed a p-distance value of less than 1.4% to that of the adult Lu. attenuatum. The sporocyst was identified molecularly as Lu. attenuatum based on an empirical intraspecific genetic variation in dicrocoeliids, and thus A. satsumense found to be its first intermediate host. We also provided DNA barcodes to an adult specimen of Lyperosomum sp. (Dicrocoeliidae) detected from the same dead specimen of T. pallidus.

A single adult specimen (192.2 mm standard length) of the Malabar Trevally, Platycaranx malabaricus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801) (Teleostei: Carangidae), collected from Sagami Bay was observed in the fish collection of the Department of Zoology, The University Museum, The University of Tokyo. Because the northern limit of the distributional range of the species has been regarded as Mihama Town, Aichi Prefecture, the specimen described in this study represents the northernmost record and first record from Kanagawa Prefecture of P. malabaricus.

The order Tetraodontiformes is regarded as one of the most highly derived groups among teleostean fishes and contains 435 species among 104 genera of 10 families. They have been studied in various academic disciplines such as phylogeny, anatomy, toxicology, fisheries, and genome biology. In this review, I present a series of studies on the phylogeny and taxonomy of tetraodontiform fishes of various taxonomic levels led by me. The studies involved various aspects such as the phylogenetic position and sister group of the order, familial relationships, relationships between balistids and monacanthids and evolution of pelvic elements, phylogeny and timescale of fugu of the genus Takifugu, relationships between tetraodontid fishes and their adaptation process to freshwater, and taxonomy of molids of the genus Mola. The results of these studies proposed evolutionary hypotheses that are largely incongruent with the conventional ones and revealed many problems regarding their taxonomy and classification.

The International Society of Protistologists (ISOP) published a new classification of eukaryotes using ‘supergroups’ in 2005, which was subsequently revised in 2012. The revised classification now reflects the knowledge of protist evolution, reintroduces some formality with group names and their authority, and provides a point of reference for protist systematics. In the present review, the ISOP's revised classification with five supergroups is compared with a hierarchical classification of the Catalogue of Life (CoL)'s database and then the significance of the following three main points are explained: (i) the Chromalveolata hypothesis was rejected and the supergroup SAR was accepted, (ii) Amorphea (including mainly Amoebozoa and Opisthokonta) was proposed, and (iii) Diaphoretickes (including mainly SAR, Archaeplastida, and a group once called “Hacrobia”) with the exception of Excavata was also proposed.

Larval cestodes of Anthobothrium sp. (Cestoda: “Tetraphyllidea”) were collected from the gills of the bigfin reef squid, “shiroika” Sepioteuthis lessoniana Férussac in Lesson, 1832 (Cephalopoda: Loliginidae) collected off Shirahama in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. These specimens were morphologically described with DNA information (28S rDNA and cox1) and reported as a new host record. In addition, records of Anthobothrium species in Japan were compiled, and a list of parasites and symbionts of S. lessoniana was provided.

In recent years, the classification system of Unionoida (Margaritiferidae, Unionidae) has undergone major changes from conventional methods by shell morphology, due to breakthroughs in approaches based on molecular phylogenetic analysis. We compared the classification system trends of the Margaritiferidae and Unionidae distributed in Japan, and pointed out that there is a time lag to the classification determinations of the latter. Although the scientific names have been changed, the existence, distribution, and ecological information (ex. host fish for glochidia) of two Japanese margaritiferids have been established, and conservation measures and regulations based on the Red List and laws can be expected. On the other hand, the Unionidae consisted of 3 subfamilies, 11 genera and 15 species has increased to 2 subfamilies, 13 genera and 26 species (excluding alien species) by the new classification system reported in 2020. Therefore, information on the distribution and ecology of many new species must be elucidated. A new classification system will be assumed the further revision, especially for the genus Sinanodonta, and the risk of some local populations extinction increase before clarifying the actual situation of species. We are now proceeding to clarify the early life stage of some Unionoida mussels (ex. parasitic stage, salinity tolerance), but insufficient knowledge of the life cycle of Unionoida has prevented the establishment of complete ex-situ conservation methods. Conversion project of numerous reservoirs are that the most important habitats for Unionidae species pressing forward in Japan. In light of this situation, it is hoped that the new classification system that can serve as a basis for on-site conservation will spread throughout as soon as possible to realize comprehensive conservation.

At least ten families of the molluscan class Gastropoda contain parasitic species. Parasitic gastropods exhibit an extraordinarily large number of species and wide varieties of morphologies and host-exploitation strategies. Here, I introduce our evolutionary studies based on molecular phylogenetic analysis for two lineages of parasitic gastropods: Caledoniella (Caledoniellidae) and Eulimidae. Species of Caledoniella parasitize stomatopods (mantis shrimps) and have close phylogenetic kinship to burrow commensals of marine benthic invertebrates. Interestingly, Sigaretornus sp. from mantis shrimp burrows was found to be sister to Caledoniella, suggesting the following evolutionary scenario from free-living organisms to parasites: (1) colonization into benthic invertebrates’ burrows, (2) specialization to mantis shrimps, and (3) habitat-shift to the host body surface with the acquisition of the parasitic nature. Members of the other group Eulimidae show the widest range of parasitic strategies (i.e., temporary, ecto- and endoparasitism) on their echinoderm hosts. Molecular phylogenies of the family have revealed the polyphyly of endoparasitic taxa and repeated evolutionary changes from slender to globose shells. Recurrent specializations to the parasitic mode of life probably have an important role in the diversification of eulimid gastropods.

An amendment to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature was passed on 4th Sept 2012 that formally establishes ZooBank as the online version of the Official Register of Zoological Nomenclature, and allows valid publication of new nomenclatural acts in electronic-only journals as well as electronic-first works. The amendment requires electronic-only, and electronic-first works to be registered in ZooBank, and to include the registration number ('ZooBank LSID') in the publication. Although registration of the names and nomenclatural acts themselves is not yet required for their availability, the amendment encourages authors to register all new names and nomenclatural acts, whether they are introduced in e-only publications or in standard paper publications as well as publications, names and acts that have been previously published. This paper provides a practical instruction manual in Japanese to assist taxonomists to register their work in ZooBank based on its new version 3.1.

The class Monogenea (Platyhelminthes) is commonly parasitic on or in aquatic or amphibious vertebrates, mainly fishes, but rarely on aquatic invertebrates. In Japan, a total of 240 nominal species of monogeneans has so far been reported. Freshwater fishes are mainly parasitized by monopisthocotyleans. Based on the number of monogenean species collected by me from Japanese freshwater fishes, 600 to 900 species of freshwater monogeneans may be found on approximately 500 species of freshwater fishes. However, only about 80 monogenean species have been reported to date. And, in total, 15 alien monopisthocotylean species have been reported from alien freshwater fishes in Japan. Monogeneans can establish more readily together with their hosts than other groups of parasites because of their simple life cycle, and some of monogeneans, especially alien species, are known to cause negative impacts on wild and farmed fish stocks. The fauna of alien monogeneans in Japan should be urgently clarified. Only 12 species of monogeneans have been reported from six of the 90 endangered freshwater fish species. It is highly desirable to clarify the monogenean fauna of the freshwater fishes on the verge of co-extinction and to conserve biological diversity of monogenean species.
