A single specimen (130.0 mm standard length: SL) of Platyberyx mauli Kukuev, Parin and Trunov, 2012, collected at 452–453 m depth off Shizugawa Bay, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, is the first record of the species from the Pacific Ocean. Previously reported only from the eastern central Atlantic, P. mauli is characterized by the following combination of characters: dorsal-fin rays 28 (28 in present specimen); anal-fin rays 17 (17); pectoral-fin rays 17 or 18 (18); total vertebrae number 33 or 34 (34); head length 30.4–33.9% SL (30.5% SL); body depth 45.6–52.2% SL (46.3% SL); prepectoral length 34.2–35.3% SL (34.2% SL); dorsal-fin base length 75.4–79.1% SL (76.1% SL); ventral caudal spur absent; procurrent rays cylindrical; gill rakers stout, rounded, with many small bristles, especially near tip and midway along each raker; jaw teeth in multiple rows anteriorly; posterior margin of upper jaw extending nearly to posterior margin of orbit; dorsal pharyngeal papillae multifid; conspicuous multifid papillae throughout inside of mouth cavity. The new standard Japanese name “Shamoji-yaegisu” is proposed for the species. Additionally, a single specimen (176.9 mm SL) of Platyberyx andriashevi (Kukuev, Parin and Trunov, 2012), collected off the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, represents the first record of the species from that region. A key to the six species of Caristiidae currently known from Japan is provided.

A recent taxonomic review has revealed that three species of Ammodytes (Ammodytes japonicus, Ammodytes heian, and Ammodytes hexapterus) are distributed in Japanese waters. Species identification using morphological characters is difficult due to their similar appearance. A rapid and convenient method for identifying the three species of Ammodytes from Japan was developed via a multiplex haplotype-specific (MHS)-PCR of the mitochondrial COI region. Two primers designed for A. japonicus and A. hexapterus yielded species-specific amplification products in different sizes (ca. 500 bp and 300 bp, respectively). Together with a pair of universal primers for fish, about 1,500 bp can be amplified by MHS-PCR, which allows the robust identification of the three species of Ammodytes.

The rarely collected ceratioid anglerfish family Caulophrynidae, including the genera Caulophryne Goode and Bean, 1896 and Robia Pietsch, 1979, is widely distributed from the surface to the bathypelagic zone in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. Valid Caulophryne species, characterized by the absence of an expanded escal bulb, presence of only 2 pectoral radials, extremely long dorsal- and anal-fin rays, 8 caudal-fin rays, neuromasts of the acoustic-lateralis system located at the tips of elongate filaments, an illicial length less than 130% of standard length (SL), 14–22 dorsal-fin rays, and 12–19 anal-fin rays, include Caulophryne jordani Goode and Bean, 1896 and Caulophryne pelagica (Brauer, 1902) from all three oceans, Caulophryne polynema Regan, 1930 from the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, and Caulophryne bacescui Mihai-Bardan, 1982 from the eastern Pacific. A single female specimen of C. polynema, collected over a bottom depth of 658–663 m off Iwate Pref., Pacific coast of northern Japan, on 9 October 2020, was distinguished from other congeners by the following combination of characters: illicium length 17.3% SL, with about 50 translucent filaments along its entirety; 19 dorsal- and 17 anal-fin rays. In addition, a parasitic male with degenerated dorsal, anal and pectoral fins, and eyes was found on the specimen. The specimen represents the first record of Caulophryne polynema from the western North Pacific, including Japanese waters, and northernmost record of the species in the Pacific Ocean. The new standard Japanese name “Fusafusa-hirenaga-chochin-anko” is proposed for the species.

The ceratoid anglerfish genus Dolopichthys Garman, 1899, distributed in the bathypelagic zone of all three major oceans, is characterized by the following combination of characters: females with well-developed sphenotic spines; body relatively long and slender, not globular; pectoral-fin lobe short, shorter than the longest pectoral-fin rays; skin naked and entirely smooth; lower jaw with a well-developed symphysial spine; pterygiophore emerging on the snout from between the frontal bones; caudal peduncle depth less than 20% of standard length (SL); quadrate spine well developed; frontal bones long and straight; hyomandibula with a double head. The genus includes seven valid species, Dolopichthys allector Garman, 1899, Dolopichthys danae Regan, 1926, Dolopichthys longicornis Parr, 1927, Dolopichthys jubatus Regan and Trewavas, 1932, Dolopichthys pullatus Regan and Trewavas, 1932, Dolopichthys dinema Pietsch, 1972, and Dolopichthys karsteni Leipertz and Pietsch, 1987, with only D. longicornis being known from Japanese waters to date. A single female specimen (88.6 mm SL) of the rare species D. danae, was collected at a bottom depth of 902–917 m off Iwate Pref., Pacific coast of northern Japan, on 12 October 2022. The specimen was distinguished from other congeners by a longer illicium (length 70% SL), dorsal midline of the escal bulb with two darkly pigmented, distally bifurcating papillae, vomer without teeth, and lower jaw with ca. 150 teeth. Dolopichthys danae was previously known from six specimens only, all from the North Atlantic (south of 40˚N), the present specimen therefore representing the seventhknown specimen and first record of the species from the Indo-Pacific, including Japanese waters. The new standard Japanese name “Enaga-mimizuku-rakuda-anko” is proposed for the species.

A specimen of Sargocentron rubrum (Forsskål, 1775) and two specimens of Scarus ovifrons Temminck and Schlegel, 1846, caught by local fishermen off the coast of Kyoto Prefecture, Japan in December 2021, represent the first and northernmost records in the Sea of Japan, respectively. Both species are likely to have been transported northwards by the Tsushima Warm Current. Because the two specimens of S. ovifrons were collected at almost the same time in adjacent areas, it is possible that they had been part of an aggregation of individuals. Because S. ovifrons contains a palytoxin-like toxin, great care should be taken to avoid its accidental sale at fish markets.

More than 1,300 species of fishes have been reported from the Japanese side of the Sea of Japan. However, occurrence records for a great number of these species are not documented by voucher specimens, rendering estimates of the diversity of fishes from this region unclear as to their reliability. Given this situation, ichthyologists at the Maizuru Fisheries Research Station of Kyoto University are central to a research group aiming to provide a more reliable estimate of the diversity of the fish fauna of this region that is based on a reproducible data such as voucher specimens. Here we provide some biogeographic (24 species) and taxonomic (2 species) notes as a preliminary report towards this goal. As a result of new biogeographical findings, 10 species are confirmed from this region for the first time, and the distributional ranges of 14 other species are extended to the east. Most of these 24 species are not residents in the Sea of Japan, rather they are migratory species likely to have drifted from the southward via the Tsushima Warm Current. An unidentified congrid species, Ariosoma sp. and an undescribed cynoglossid species, Symphurus sp., were collected off Kyoto Prefecture. Exact identification of the former species, and a description and formal naming for the latter species, will be the subject of studies conducted in the near future.

A single specimen (166.0 mm standard length) of Peristedion riversandersoni (Alcock, 1894) (Teleostei: Peristediidae), previously recorded in Japanese waters from off Toyama Prefecture in the Sea of Japan, the Pacific coast from Ibaraki to Miyazaki prefectures, and the East China Sea, was recently collected from off Iwate Prefecture, northern Japan. This specimen representing the northernmost record for P. riversandersoni is described herein. In addition, coloration of fresh and preserved specimens of P. riversandersoni are emphasized as newly recognized diagnostic characters for this species based on a comparative examination of 29 specimens of P. riversandersoni, including the Iwate specimen, with 70 specimens of Peristedion orientale Temminck and Schlegel, 1843.

Snailfishes (Cottoidei: Liparidae) are a large, morphologically diverse group of marine fishes, comprising about 32 genera with over 430 species worldwide. Among them, Osteodiscus Stein, 1978 is primarily distinguished from other genera in having a unique skeletal pelvic disk covered only by thin skin. Three species of the genus are currently known: Osteodiscus cascadiae Stein, 1978 from the eastern North Pacific; Osteodiscus andriashevi Pitruk and Fedorov, 1990 from southern Sea of Okhotsk; and Osteodiscus rhepostomias Stein, 2012 from southeast of New Zealand. During a taxonomic study of snailfishes, a single female specimen of Osteodiscus (150.3 mm in standard length) collected off Iwate in a depth of 1,997–2,108 m, was discovered in the fish collection of the National Museum of Nature and Science, Japan (NSMT). The specimen, characterized by 60 vertebrae (total), 54 dorsal- and 49 anal-fin rays, a horizontal mouth, simple blunt teeth on both jaws, some teeth with lateral cusps on the tip, an unnotched pectoral fin, and the presence of epipleural ribs and a reduced epural, was identified as O. andriashevi, previously known only from the holotype and three paratypes. The present specimen represents the first record of Osteodiscus from Japanese waters and the southernmost record of O. andriashevi. The new standard Japanese names “Hariban-kusauo-zoku” and “Choja-hariban-kusauo” are proposed for the genus and species, respectively. Based on the present specimen, the species diagnosis was partly revised.

To clarify the reproductive ecology of the endangered cyprinid Honmoroko, Gnathopogon caerulescens, endemic to Lake Biwa, the occurrence of eggs in inlets, sex ratio and monthly changes in gonad somatic indices (GSI) were investigated in the Nishinoko lagoon, adjacent to Lake Biwa, from March to May, 2012. Eggs of Honmoroko were found on gravel and vegetation in two inlets, suggesting that not only the reed zone of Lake Biwa and its lagoons but also inlets of the lagoons are important spawning habitats of that species. The sex ratios of individuals collected in the two inlets were more malebiased (11.2–32.1 : 1) than that in the reed zone of the lagoon (1.5–2.7 : 1). The GSI of males gradually decreased as the breeding season progressed, those of females not showing any significant statistical changes, except for individuals collected around the reed zone and inlet in April. It was concluded that males remain in inlets and the reed zone during spawning, whereas females migrate to the inlets only for spawning, subsequently returning to the reed zone until the next spawning session.
