A high spatial frequency modulation transfer function (MTF) of a lens has been obtained by scanning a line image with a knife edge. Practical limit of the spatial frequency for a camera lens is about lOO/mm at the utmost. However, this apparatus, aiming at measuring high resolution lenses, can measure MTF's at the spatial frequency up to 1, 000 1ines/mm. To design this apparatus, the following components have been developed a knife edge using 18-carat gold, a moving coil type scanner, a digital-to-analogue converter type scanner driver circuit and a slit. The MTF was measured at the spatial frequency of 500 1ines/mm on the axis of the lens under test within 5% discrepancy to the calculated value.

In recent years, with the development of coherent optics and holographic techniques, it is often necessary to measure the optical path difference in a microscopic phase object using a high magnification and high resolution interference microscope for transmitted light.For this purpose, a high resolution interference microscope for transmitted light applying a holographic real-time interference method has been realized corresponding with a Mach-Zehnder type interference microscope, and the problems for realizing such an instrument are discussed.

A simple machine for making hyperboloid lenses has been developed. This machine utilizes a simple geometry of hyperbola. A plastic rod can be easily cut into hyperboloid lens within 10 minutes and the obtained surface of hyperboloid lens is rather smooth. This simple machine is very useful for preparing experimental optical systems with very small aberration in laboratories.

A common-path interferometer with a modified zone plate for testing aspheric optical elements is given. The interferometer described here is the generalization of a conventional Fresnel zone plate interferometer developed by Smartt and is suited to test aspheric refracting elements as well as reflecting ones. Formulas to compute modified zone plates, especially for the conic sections of revolution, are presented. Error analysis for the setting of the zone plate is given and the inter ference pattern in the presence of three dimensional displacement of the zone plate is discussed. It is pointed out that one can set the zone plate by making use of the interferogram itself and thus test the performance of the elements easily. Some experimental examples are presented.

Four kinds of ophthalmic lenses which have different Abbe numbers (vd) with the same refractive index (nd) for 588 nm have been prepared for our study. They have different chromatic aberrations even though they have the same powers.In the first, axial and lateral chromatic aberrations of these lenses were calculated and measured. Then, the white light MTF curves of the visual system of the wearers were measured to estimate the influences of the chromatic aberrations.As the results, it became clear that one can neglect the axial chromatic aberration in general. The lateral chromatic aberration, however, decreases the visual acuity of the subject considerably who sees through an eccentric portion of the lenses.
