Abstract In this paper, the author gives a detailed explanation to the concept of mono in Japanese language to clarify its essential significance. The notion covers so broad a conceptualized area; for instance, it means a particular thing, things in general, personal feeling, sacred things, the mysterious, the uncanny, the eerie and the unearthly, and so on. It seems there are such various meanings in the notion that it is difficult to see the abstract concept of mono, which should be highly comprehensive and essential. In the author's view, the hyper-categorial, abstract meaning can be made clear if we take the following two points into consideration; one is the diachronic notion of mono, and the other is the one within the phenomenological lived space of subjectivity. The abstract concept of mono is characterized as <dynamic mobility> and <otherness>, and the concept would have various meanings in the context of the phenomenological lived space, which is perceptually signified in the directions by the subject based upon the subject's body as center. When a Japanese speaker captures it in "front", it would mean an objective, definitely discreet thing. When they capture it in "back", it would signify a mysterious, horrible thing. "Side" is related to personal feeling/mood, and "above" is to the holy. The author also introduces other Japanese notions of omote, ura and kage, and clarifies why mono is captured as specific objective reality in "front", although its abstract concept is <dynamic mobility> and <otherness>.

A person is morally responsible for what she has done only if she could have done otherwise. This principle (the Principle of Alternative Possibilities) has been widely accepted, but Harry Frankfurt presented a counterexample to this principle, which radically altered the direction of debate on free will and moral responsibility, and compatibility of these two with determinism. Frankfurt proposed to replace the principle with "a person is not morally responsible for what she has done if she did it only because she could not have done otherwise". But I think this revision is not convincing for three reasons. (1) Frankfurt uses the expression 'because' ambiguously. (2) He doesn't succeed, in explaining why it is. necessary to use the expression 'only because' instead of 'because'. (3) We can think up counterexamples to this revised version too.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the Children's Cognitive Structure of Natural Phenomena as logical operation in Life Environmental Learning. I investigated from the point of view of C. Kamii /R. DeVries' "logical operation". As the result of the investigation, I drew up a model that showed the knowledge was composed of logico-mathematical knowledge and physical knowledge. On the basis of this model, I interpreted the children's cognitive structure of learning natural phenomena and their process of generating children's cognitive structures of natural phenomena by analyzing the learning record of Life Environmental Learning on 2nd graders.

The Tokugawa Shogun and their families lived in Ooku (Great Interior), Honmaru Residence inside Edo Castle. This research analyzes the composition of the decorative interior of 4 specific buildings located on the west side of Ooku which employed ten different plans in their construction during the Manen Period, 1860. Many walls and ceilings of the rooms of the buildings are covered with papers called shohekiga on which pictures have been drawn, or papers called karakami on which various colorful patterns have been printed. The author examines the use of shohekiga and karakami in every room in the targeted buildings and demonstrates that they are used in three different ways depending on the room in which they are located. They are; Type 1: shohekiga put on both ceilings and walls or sliding doors, Type 2: shohekiga on ceilings and karakami on walls or sliding doors, and Type 3: karakami on both ceilings and walls or sliding doors. In the formal official rooms Type 1 is most commonly seen. Type 2 is seen in rooms used for Shoguns and their wives' daily informal living. Type 3 is seen mainly in rooms used by servants or attendants. Based on these observations, the author suggests that the degree of quality of materials is proportionate to the hierarchy of residents in Ooku.

The interiors of samurai residences are known for their reflection of elaborate, intricate and dignified taste of craftsmanship. Among them, naturally, the Honmaru residence of Edo castle, together with the Ooku (Great Interior), represents the supreme level of artifacts of the time. The Ooku Taimenzyo, consisting of Zyodan and Gedan, is one of the buildings of the Ooku where public receptions of Shogun and his wives were held. The author examined more than 10 public or private old documents and plans of the Ooku Taimenzyo made in the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate, and collated the records to show what the walls, sliding doors, ceilings, nail covers and fanlight carvings were like. This paper shows the detailed charts of the above accounts and suggests their supremacy. For example, every item was adorned with beautiful drawings by the day's top-notch chartered painter Kano Seisenin. The most intricate and gorgeous style was the coved and coffered ceiling called Oriage Goutenzyo which doubtless, was the outcome of the day's highest technology. Embossed and repeatedly plated high quality nail covers were also elaborate.

It is obvious that a novel is one medium and a movie based on the novel is another, but images on the screen from the filmed version can help those brought up in a TV-saturated world connect with the world of the novel. They can help such viewers imagine the world of the novel when it would otherwise be difficult for them to do so. On the other hand it often happens that the images are quite different from the original, and it sometimes occurs that only part of the story can be transferred to the movie version. Such differences, which are usually criticized as misinterpretations, can be clues to other valid interpretation of the novel. The different interpretations in the films can give readers a bridge to other possibilities of interpretation. The gap between the film and the novel enables viewers and readers to discover inevitably not only what the novel means to convey but what the movie is designed to do. This research deals with how the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's provides an incentive to read the original novel closely. Though the film is considerably different from the book, this different interpretation is incorporated in a questionnaire designed to aid comprehension. This paper will look at what questions are effective in increasing understanding of the novel.
