The propulsive characteristics of water rockets have been analyzed experimentally by the thrust test stand. It can measure the unsteady thrust force acting on a PET bottle and the air pressure inside the bottle simultaneously. The result of the observation by a video camera shows that air precedes water when it is about to be discharged entirely, and the measured thrust history indicates that it decreases suddenly then. We have developed a flow regulator to reduce the precursor air discharge which is considered as a result of the swirling flow inside the bottle. The experimental results show that the air discharge is suppressed and the thrust history is improved to have a potential for higher altitude.

Plant maintenance and plant management activities are important for steady and safety operation of the nuclear plant. Therefore the Structural Integrity Oriented Reliability Assessment System (SORE) has developed to assist preservation management for the main components of MONJU plant. SORE calculates stress intensity and creep-fatigue damage of main parts of components using the plant data (temperature history, etc.).

This paper describes the development of a new inspection robot used for the in-service inspection (ISI) of the reactor vessel of the FBR MONJU. The inspection is carried out using a CCD camera for visual tests and an EMAT for volumetric tests at elevated temperature (200 deg.) and high irradiation dose condition (10 Sv/hr). The applicability of a commercial CCD camera and an EMAT have been confirmed by experiments under severe conditions. In addition, reduction of the robot weight from 47kg to 34kg is achieved by optimization of all parts in the robot, these results in a reduction of wear and replacement frequency of tires. A performance improvement with EMAT was attained by a new magnet arrangement and a signal treatment method.

Recently Otsubo and Edamura reported that dielectric fluids showed striking viscosity increase on the application of electric field when the electrode surface was planted with hair-like short fibers. By using the phenomenon, ER effect applications are expected without ER fluids. This study aims to develop a fluid control valve with the ER effect caused by fiber planted electrodes. In this paper, firstly, the fiber planted ER valve, which have fiber planted high voltage electrode and normal surface ground electrode, is proposed. The valve can control fluid power with applied voltage. Secondly, as an application of a fiber planted ER valve, a 4-port fiber planted ER valve is proposed and fabricated. And then, it is demonstrated that a 4-port fiber planted ER valve can control a piston-cylinder.

Hot and cold fluids are mixed at the core outlet of sodium cooled fast reactors. The temperature fluctuation causes high cycle thermal fatigue in structural components. The temperature fluctuation at the core outlet region has not a sinusoidal waveform but an irregular spike waveform. In the study, the evaluation method for the high cycle thermal fatigue was investigated against the spike waveform of temperature fluctuation. It was found that the combinational method between the peak-to-peak value of temperature fluctuation and the frequency response function of structure could evaluate the fatigue damage in structure.

In this research, the practical correlation and flow regime model is proposed on the basis of heat transfer coefficient analyzed from boiling heat transfer experiment, under temperature control, using following experimental parameter: mass flux in upstream [kgm^<-2>s^<-1>] and sub-cooled temperature in upstream [K]. As the result, it is indicated that forced convective boiling heat transfer coefficient under high mass flux condition show higher value than that of pool boiling. Correlation for heat transfer coefficient and experimental value agree well in DNB region and is demonstrated adequacy and practicability. This flow regime model is presupposed as high concentration droplet flow. And it is also noted that the gravity and centrifugal force affect to the heat transfer coefficient in some experimental condition for horizontal straight or curve tube.

In this paper, we describe experimental results of PIV (Particle Imaging Velocimetry) technique applied to visualize flow in microchannels. 100μm width×60μm height channels were fabricated with PDMS transparent silicone rubber, and 1μm diameter fluorescent particles were used for tracers. Flow visualization was successfully carried out, and large disturbance of flow velocities caused by interaction of gas-liquid interface and a trapped liquid droplet at corners were observed. Relatively large focal length and Brownian motion of the tracer particles are found to be serious problems on micro-PIV techniques.

1/10^<th> scale model flow test has been conducted to measure the fluid force acting on the upper internal structure in a sodium reactor. This model has already been constructed and it couldn't be re-arranged including its flow section. Then, the internal structure is supported with flexible rods to measure the response, preventing the effect on the flow pattern. The exciting force by flowing fluid is analyzed by solving an inverse problem, where the exciting force is obtained by screening the vibration characteristics from the responding vibration signal. Because the real exciting force has not known, two methods, from the acceleration response and from the strain gage attached on the supporting rods, are tried to obtain the same force, and they show a reasonable coincidence

Friction characteristics between cam and follower are numerically calculated using an approximate method. The model is based on partial EHL theory which consists of a film thickness formula[Ref.1] modified from Pan-Hamrock's formula[Ref.2]) considering surface roughness and the mean contact pressure-compliance relationship (GW model[Ref.3]). The effects of non-Newtonian behavior of lubricant and surface temperature rise are taken into account for the calculation of friction force. The result of this approximate method is compared with the previous study (Tanaka et al. [Ref.4]) which solved simultaneously Reynolds equation, elasticity equation, etc. and the experimental results obtained by a made apparatus similar to the system. The validity of approximate method is also examined, for mainly the effects of amplitude and directional properties of surface roughness.

In spacecraft system acoustic tests, local sound pressure level increse in the narrow gap between spacecraft primal structure and solar array is generated. This phenomenon is similar to fill effect, which has been recognized since 1990's, that sound pressure level of an interior fairing after filled spacecraft will increase up to 5-10dB compared to an empty fairing particularly at narrow gap between the wall of the failing and the spacecraft exterior. This paper shows investigation results of vibraiton response of spacecraft due to local sound pressure level increase. It shows simulation and experiment results with local sound pressure level increase and without local sound pressure level increase.

We investigated the drag reduction phenomena on highly water repellent surfaces, which have micron to sub-millimeter order of projections at several intervals of the same order. The most significant drag reduction in the present work was achieved on the surface of the largest structure among those of the constant concavo-convex ratio. The ability to hold the air layer in water depends on both the size and the ratio of concavo-convex structure. The water-repellency of these surfaces in bulk water didn't match that estimated from the contact angle of water droplet on the surface in ambient air.

In order to minimize the space of bent tubular parts, a bending technology with small bending radii is requested. Tube shear bending is a suitable technology to realize a considerable small bending radius, which is very difficult to be manufactured with common cold-bending methods. It can be applied as an effective means when space limitation is a main design factor. Utilizing the shear bending process, production of compact and unified elbow tubular parts is feasible. In this paper, the procedure of tube shear bending has been introduced. Also, an elasto-plastic 3D simulation analysis for shear bending process of circular tubes was undertaken. As the result, the deformation behavior of tube as well as the effect of pushing force have been clarified.

Aerodynamic characteristics and near-field flow fields of rectangular flat-plate wings with very small aspect ratios, λ=1&acd;0.05 at full angles of attack, α=0&acd;90 deg, have been presented. The flow details were investigated using oil film flow visualization and PIV measurements. The typical features of surface flows on wings with various aspect ratios can be classified into 6 types, i.e., un-separated(US), partially separated(PS-1) with U-type flow reattachment, PS-2 with O-type reattachment, PS-3 with long cigar-type reattachment, PS-4 with indistinct reattachment and fully separeted(FS). The aerodynamic characteristics and near-flow structures of test wings can be classified into three groups corresponding to their aspect ratios, which are (1) small aspect ratio wing (λ=1), (2) smaller aspect ratio wings (λ=0.75&acd;0.66) and (3) very small aspect ratio wings (λ=0.5&acd;0.05). It has been confirmed that the aerodynamics and detailed flow structures investigated exhibit very close correlations.

3 dimensional wake structures behind rectangular flat-plate wings with aspect ratios of 0.1&acd;1.0 have been investigated using Laser Doppler Velocimeter and yaw-probe. Flow details, such as vorticity vectors and vortex lines in the wakes, have been analyzed for the 5 typical flow configurations (PS-1&acd;PS-4,FS), which were classified in the previous report from the measurements of aerodynamic characteristics and surface flow visualization. Trailing vortices are clearly formed for flow configurations, PS-1 and PS-2. Ring-type vortices are shed for FS. Vortex structures for PS-3 and PS-4 appear to be mixed types of trailing vortices and ring-type vortices.

Most of the existing numerical models for the simulation of Tsunami are based on the 2D shallow water equations. However, for many situations, it is necessary to use the 3D model in addition to the shallow water models to evaluate the damage in the coast region with a reliable accuracy. So, we propose the multi-scale warning system for Tsunami by connecting these models to cover the physical phenomena that have diverse scales in both time and space. In this paper, we present the formulation of the 2D shallow water wave model based on the CIP/MM-FVM with the MOC. In addition, we construct the formulation for the source term preserved the fundamental balance between the source term and the flux gradient. Finally, we apply the present model to some "real-case" numerical experiments.

One of our authors has articulation handicap and feels strongly the importance of the voice information in conversation that cannot be expressed with texts. We are considering about a system which makes the indistinct sound clear and which keeps the speaker's feature of voice as much as possible. We examined some methods. In the experiment using single Mora, by adding clear consonant waveform to the indistinct sound, unvoiced consonant and some voiced consonant have been made clear. Moreover, the vowel has also been made clear using wavelet transform ation. Also, we used the wavelet transformation for speech recognition, and it modestly recognized some indistinct sound.

In general, some defects may generate in manufacture process of an aluminum casting alloy. Therefore it is necessary to measure the overall and local strain with considering the effect of the defects in order to make reliable verification of the material property of the aluminum casting alloy. In this study, first of all, we verified accuracy of Strain Distribution Measuring System using a digital image correlation method by comparison with a strain gauge. Also, we measured the strain distribution of the aluminum casting alloy and compared it with the distribution of the defects inside the specimen which was examined with the X-ray CT system. As the result, we succeeded in measuring the local strain which seemed to be effected by the internal defects, by the present system.

The foundation technology for embodying an inclination section high-speed escalator was established. The step speed of the escalator in the inclination section is 1.5 times as high as that in the landing section. Therefore, in the inclination section high-speed escalator, the shortening of the movement time consist with the safety in the landing section. In this paper, the result of dynamic analysis simulation that is done as the first step of embodiment is explained. The driving reaction force of steps is affected by the difference of the reversal center position of steps. The reversal center position of steps is optimized.
