This paper presents how an FEA model using MSC.NASTRAN was developed to simulate dehydration dynamics of a washing machine with spinning basket rotating about vertical axis. Gyroscopic effect, centrifugal forces, and self-balancing mechanism (liquid balancer) associated with rotating structures were considered in the simulation. Using the model, frequency response analysis was performed to simulate response of non-rotating structures in operating test. Static analysis was performed to simulate strain and stress of rotating structures at a discrete operating speed. The model was validated successfully with operating test data measurement. This paper also presents how the operating test was performed to understand dynamics of the dehydration process. The test was performed by installing an unbalance mass to the spinning basket based on manufacturer's design standard.

A conceptual design of sodium cooled fast reactor as small-decentralized power supply has been performed. The reactor named 4S (Super Safe, Small and Simple) has a reflector controlled U-Zr metallic fuel core. Characteristics of the 4S reactor are non-refueling (core life time: 30 years), the negative coolant void reactivity during 30 years, integrated and simple reactor structure, and natural circulation decay heat removal systems. Accidents without scram events (AWS) as unprotected sudden loss of flow event and ATWS events have been analyzed for the passive safety features of 4S using a transient simulation code (ARGO-3 code). It is predicts that the passive safety can evade sever damages of the core and primary coolant boundary under the ATWS and AWS events.

Tribological coatings such as Cr-N, TiBN, Me-DLC(Me-C:H) were coated by Plasma Booster Sputtering(PBS) process using conventional balanced DC magnetron sputtering cathode in combination with additional DC plasma discharge between cathode and booster electrode. Seizure load and dynamic friction coefficient between coated steel substrate and steel(SCM415) was measured by pin and V-block type Faville tester. Also nano-hardness and Young's modulus was measured by nano-indenter using Berkovich diamond indenter.

A profile inspection method which can measure the height distribution of a roadbed from a high-speed vehicle is required for a health monitoring of the roadbed. A light-section method is often used for this purpose. The analysis time is, however, long because this method analyzes a 2-D image to obtain a height distribution along a line. An intensity ratio method was proposed as a profile measurement method. This method can be realized with simple equipments. We are developing a high-speed profile measurement method of a moving object using three linear sensors set in parallel. In this paper, we propose a profile inspection method with three linear sensors by the intensity ratio method.

A method of damage based prediction of static strength of MEMS structures fabricated by Bosch process was proposed. Four points bending tests in different bending directions were performed in order to evaluate the distribution of damage-characteristics on the processed surface as a function of position along the etching direction. As a result, the static strength of notched specimens was successfully predicted from the characteristics obtained with the specimens without notch.-

Any wind instrument can sound due to the vibration of the air, expiration flow inside of the wind instrument. In case of a trumpet or a clarinet, a mouth or a reed helps to sound variable tones. In case of a flute, there is no mechanical vibration. We would like to investigate more detail about the flow and the vibration with sound inside or outside of the flute, in order to understand the mechanism of the wind instrument and to aid in the manufacture of the good instrument. In this report, a Japanese traditional bamboo flute was used in the experiment. The dynamic PIV technique was applied to measure the vibration. 2 kinds of experiments were done. The Argon-gas flow with different tone inside/outside of the bamboo flute was measured using a high frequency pulse laser. Oil mist was used as the tracer particles. Then, we also tried to measure the flow in bamboo flute when a human player played, using a CW laser and the water-mist as the tracers. We successfully measured that the periodical flow near a hole of the bamboo flute went out from and came into the flute at 200-500Hz dependent on the tone.

A hydrodynamic levitation centrifugal pump is being developed for a long-term implantable artificial heart. The hemocompatibility was investigated with numerical analysis and has been verified with animal blood tests. The hemolytic property was improved by expanding the bearing gap and by adjusting the pressure balance and the antithrombogenicity has been improved by adding deep grooves to the hydrodynamic bearings to increase the flow rate through the bearings.

The bullet-firing test was done in the different velocity and collision angle of the bullet. The effect of its velocity and angle on the deformation shape after firing was discussed by comparison with experiment and simulation. The velocity of the bullet was chosen in several kinds of speed ranges at 80m/s-250m/s. As for the angle of incidence with the collision object, four kinds of angles 90°(head-on collision), 45°, 30°, and 60°were set.

The wear phenomenon of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) in the knee and hip prostheses is one of the major restriction factors on the longevity of these implants. Especially in retrieved knee prostheses with screw holes in the tibial tray, the cold flow into the screw holes is frequently observed on the undersurface of the UHMWPE tibial components. In most retrieved cases, the protruded areas of cold flow on the undersurface were located at the reverse side of the severely worn surface of the UHMWPE tibial component. It appears that the cold flow into screw holes contributes to increase of wear of the UHMWPE tibial components. In this study, knee joint simulator tests were performed to investigate the influence of the cold flow into screw holes on the wear of UHMWPE. Significant cold flow into screw hole was identified in the undersurface of the UHMWPE specimen, and was associated with delamination in the contact area on the opposite side of the specimen.

The thought of Circular Heaven and Square Earth is the Chinese traditional thought. The root of the thought is Jade disc (玉壁) and Jade cube (玉〓) at Liangzhu culture (良渚文化). Jade disc is a circular disc with a small hole at center of it. Jade cube is almost a rectangular solid body with a big hole within it. Authors performed field survey in Liangzhu culture area. The places are Liangzhu ruins (3300-2000BC) and ruins of Yin dynasty (1600-1046BC) in Anyang (安陽). In Yin Museum, authors researched oracle bone inscriptions.

This paper describes a new approach in visualizing self-awareness. In particular, Habit of Speaking (HoS) is focused. In the pilot experiment of the chat system 48 kinds of HoS were extracted, and they were altogether called 'Group of HoS.' In the main experiment, all subjects evaluated HoS one by one using the Internet. Then they had to choose one from 4 kinds of Frequency; a) Many times, b) Sometimes, c) Unusual, d) Never, and one from 5 kinds of Impression; a) Best, b) Better, c) So so, d) Worse, e) Worst. Thus, all HoS were ranked by Impression and Frequency, which lead to 4 categories. This experiment demonstrates that although most subjects would like to grasp their own HoS, they felt it too difficult to grasp their HoS by themselves.

In the actual wind turbine operated in the field, the wind direction changes with time. So, the turbine is operated with yaw miss alignment in most of time. To grasp the flow around wind turbine is important for evaluating the rotor performance. This paper shows the results of the velocity field measurement around a horizontal axis wind turbine in case various yawed operation. The experiments are carried out in a wind tunnel with 2.4m-diameter test rotor with 2-dimensional laser Doppler velocimeter. In the measurements the power curve and velocity distribution are measured for each yaw angle. Increasing of yaw angle, the power coefficient of the rotor decreases. The flow around turbine under yawed condition expands as non-yaw operation, but the flow pattern is not asymmetry with rotational axis. There is a large low-speed wake area in downstream of the blade placed upward. And flow around the blade placed downward has a large radial velocity component.

This paper presents characterization of output power of the metal-core piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) fiber/aluminum composite. As the piezofiber is very fragile, the interphase forming/bonding (IF/B) method proposed by Asanuma was used for embedding it in an aluminum matrix without its fracture. In this study, output power characterization of the piezo-composite specimen was done by an oscillation test, and it was found that 1) the output power generated from the specimen increases with increasing the square of its strain, and 2) the output power increases in proportion to its oscillation frequency.

For the purpose of applying biomass sources to various industrial products, a bamboo powder composite was developed by injection molding. The matrices used for the composite were a cornstarch-based biodegradable resin (CP) and polypropylene (PP). To improve compatibility between the powder and matrices, alkali-treatment using NaOH solution was carried out for the powder. The results showed that tensile strength of the PP matrix composite increases largely if the alkali-treated powder is used as reinforcement, as compared to the composite reinforced by the untreated powder. The CP matrix composite was also improved in strength, though the degree of increase was not so effective. There may be an optimal NaOH concentration to increase mechanical properties.

Sand erosion is a phenomenon where a solid particle impinging to a wall causes to damage to a part of the wall. It occurs on the wall in a lot of machines such as airplane, ship and pump. It is well known that performance and lifetime of the equipment are severely degraded due to sand erosion. In this study, we compute sand erosion phenomena in a particle separator which is implemented into the propulsion system of a helicopter, in order to clarity the change of surface geometry and flowfield and the influence on the separator effectiveness with the proceeding of erosion. Moreover, we reveal the difference of the trajectories when material and particle diameter is parametrically changed.

Thermal transient stress at core support structure of advanced fast reactor was evaluated using thermal hydraulic-structure total analysis method with experimental design. Maximum thermal stress is calculated 15〜18% larger than nominal thermal stress by uncertainty of system parameters. Maximum thermal stress was evaluated 63〜68% larger than nominal thermal stress when predicted by the past deign method, therefore about 40% excessive imaginary stress could be appropriate by thermal hydraulic-structure total analysis.

Spontaneous vapor explosion can occur when a layer of the high temperature molten material lies on the water pool or on the moisture floor. This is so-called base-triggered vapor explosion. The base-triggered vapor explosion is supposed to occur in the case of a severe accident in a nuclear reactor and in other industrial facilities. It is very important to clarify the base-triggered vapor explosion from the viewpoints of the prediction and the prevention of the vapor explosion. In order to evaluate the heat transfer and fluid dynamic behavior of the base-triggered vapor explosion, the experimental apparatus is designed and constructed. The experiments using U-Alloy95 as a stimulant material are conducted. Consequently, the behavior of the molten material can be observed in detail with this experimental apparatus. The digital auto-correlation method and PIV are also applied to the visual observation data obtained on the experiments in order to evaluate the velocity distribution of the molten material. Based on the velocity, the conversion ratio of kinetic energy in initial thermal energy at the vapor explosion is also evaluated. In addition, the experimental results are compared with the thermal interaction zone (TIZ) theory in order to evaluate the occurrence condition of base-triggered vapor explosion.

Now, coniferous trees of the enormous quantity that it planted in the days after the war reaches time to cut it down. But, it can't be said that no prospect of effectively using coniferous trees has yet emerged. To use that effectively, improvement to the high-performance wood is indispensable. In this paper, we try to destroy closed border pit membrane of Sugi (Japanese name, its scientific name is Cryptomeria japonica D.Don) to improve the permeability of water. And dried Sugi infused with several medicine to have it become a fire-resistant wood. Using the suitable strength of underwater shock wave, it is possible to destroy only closed border pit membrane but affect the original strength.

The free-edge stress singularity usually develops near the edge of the interface of the bonded dissimilar materials. Anisotropic materials may be used for making bonded dissimilar materials. When two materials are bonded, an interlayer, for example an adhesive layer, may be inserted between two materials. In this study, free-edge stress singularity of bonded dissimilar orthotropic materials with an interlayer was investigated by using the boundary element method. It was found that the influence of the interlayer on the stress distribution on interface was limited in the region of the order of the interlayer thickness around the edge of interface similar to the bonded dissimilar isotropic materials. Free-edge stress singularity disappeared by inserting a proper materials between the bonded dissimilar materials.
