A bearing steel (JIS SUJ2) and nickel chromium molybden steel (SNCM439) were fatigued with the ultrasonic fatigue-testing machine (20kHz) in laboratory air. In the very long-life regime, the decline of fatigue limit was seen. The origins of crack initiation were mostly internal inclusions. However, even when the specimen broke in a long life region, some cracks were initiated from specimen surface. Fracture surface were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The fish-eyes were observed in the specimens broken from the internal inclusions. The fracture surface could be divided into three regions. The first region surrounding inclusion was a facet area. The crack propagation in the facet region was Stage A and the crack propagation outside the facet region was Stage B. When the fatigue cracks reached the specimen surface, the fatigue cracks propagated as surface cracks. The crack propagation rate in each region was estimated to be a power function of the stress intensity range. Fatigue life was calculated by integrating with the crack propagation laws determined from the data obtained for the rotating bending. The predicted fatigue life agrees with the experimental result.

This study deals with the influence which the degree of devotion of the driver using the steering assistance system has on manual steering after the system stop. In this experiment, the course which imitated the highway by the driving simulator. The driver is run using the steering assistance system. The system stops after that and the driver makes a lane change. In this analysis we compared the driver vehavior in this case with the case where the system is not used. Consequently, the driver regained the feeling of steering promptly after the system stop, and vehicles did not depart from a lane. However, the driver behavior is better after the system stop when the degree of devotion to driving of the driver at the time of system operation is high.

This paper describes the vibration control of a plate using a piezoelectric element as a self-sensing actuator. By using self-sensing actuator techniques, one piezoelectric element, which is bonded on the face of the plate, gets the information of the vibration of the plate, and produces control input simultaneously. The control input signal is generated by the adaptive control system with the filtered-X LMS algorithm. Experimental investigations are performed and the results show that the vibration level is successfully reduced at a broad frequency band.

The role of a pressure sensor is to display pressure definitely for at least 2000 hours. However, a residual strain after reloading occurs in the diaphragm using in the high-pressure. This study involved a finite element analysis of the sensor. As the result of the analysis, the residual strain was improved by making the thickness of diaphragm thicker. However, it is thought that the sensitivity of a sensor may become poor. Therefore, it is important to reduce the force by optimizing the structure. Measurement accuracy and durability is required of high-pressure equipment. Therefore, it is important with the diaphragm type pressure sensor to examine the influence that shape and the size of diaphragm exert on the measurement accuracy and durability. As a first step, the diaphragm size was clarified. A finite element method (FEM) based on the experimental design was used. And, to optimize the size of the diaphragm, each part was examined by clarifying the stress and warp distributions.

In a cold region like Hokkaido having continuous snowfall during winter season, people are often found being slipped or fallen down while walking in the snow covered road. This sometimes causes serious injuries or fracture of bones especially to elderly people, and many of them become bedridden. In the traditional way of gait analysis, limited place and range of experiment were the constraints of measuring device. In this study, gait analysis was performed by using wearable sensors to obtain acceleration and angular velocities without the constraints of place and range of experiment. The experiment was carried out on indoor flat road, indoor stairs, paved sloping road (having slope of 5 degrees), snowy flat road and quasi-snowy flat road. The features of gait on the snowy flat road were obtained from the acceleration values.

A fall in walking on snowy road often causes sever hip fracture. For especially elderly person, thus hip fracture has high risk for bedridden. The purpose of this study is to investigate the gait characteristics on snowy road. In this experiment, eight healthy subjects walked onto snowy and asphalt roads. Gait accelerations were recorded at 20Hz by micro-accelerators equipped with the head, hip, knee and ankle of them. As a result, it was confirmed that the gate acceleration of each body segment showed different patterns with road conditions. Slipping during gait on snowy road could be detected from the change of acceleration of ankle.

The purpose of this research is to develop a new technique for the turbulent drag reduction as the passive control. The pressure loss of three kinds of seal fur (Ribbon, Spotted and Harp seals) and an electret nonwoven fabric surfaces was measured in the channel flow using the water and glycerol-water (40 wt%). The data was compared with those of smooth and riblet surface. The drag reduction could be obtained for all kinds of seal fur surfaces; it was estimated to be 11.5 % on ribbon seal, 9.5 % on spotted seal and 3.5 % on harp seal for glycerol-water, while the drag reduction was not achieved for the electret nonwoven fabric surface.

With the increase in recording density and higher rotation speeds, the aerodynamic aspect of HDD (Hard Disk Drives) is now quite significant. We studied the internal air flow of a HDD by using a direct neumerical simulation. We simulated two cases. The first case has the arm with no weight saving hole (no-hole case). The second case has the arm with weight saving hole (hole case). We observed periodic vortices (Karman's vortex) of which frequency is about 6kHz in the downstream of the arm in both cases. The scale of vortex in hole case is lager than that in no-hole case.

A conceptual design study of the sodium-cooled fast reactor (JSFR) is in progress in "Feasibility Study on Commercialized Fast Reactor Cycle Systems". The cooling system of the reactor is composed of two loops in order to reduce plant construction cost. According to reduction of loop number, large diameter pipings are adopted in the primary cooling system, and the average sodium velocity in the piping increases to 9 m/s level. One of issues for piping design is to confirm hydraulic and flow-induced vibration behaviors of the piping under high Reynolds number (10^7 order level) conditions. Then, a flow-induced vibration test facility which simulates a hot leg piping with 1/3 scale has been fabricated. As a first step of the test series, this report describes outline of flow visualization test results.

A 1/3scale flow-induced vibration test facility that simulates a hot-leg piping of the Japanese sodium-cooled fast reactor (JSFR) is used to investigate the pressure fluctuations of the pipe. To evaluate the flow-induced vibrations for the hot-leg and cold-leg pipes, the random force distributions along the pipe and their correlations are estimated. As the result, the power spectrum densities of pressure fluctuations are classified into four sections, the correlation lengths of axial direction into three sections, and the correlation lengths of tangential direction into four sections. The maximum flow-induced random vibration force in the pipe is estimated in the region of flow separation downstream the elbow.

The ventilation system of Higashiyama tunnel of Nagoya expressway No.2 Higashiyama line is the type which Portal exhaust system was combined with Trans-verse ventilation system. A change in an evacuation environment in the fire by the difference in the ventilation control pattern was evaluated at a stage of a plan by the numerical simulation. However, there were a few fire experiment cases at the actual tunnel of transverse ventilation system, and relative comparative data couldn't be found in it. This paper describes about the fire experiment enforced in Higashiyama tunnel last year.

This paper gives an account of the development of Japan's concrete dam construction technology in the 1950's and 1960's by analyzing the project documentary films, which record both the technical and human aspects of the projects. As the results of examining 25 project documentary films on the major dams including Maruyama, Kamishiiba, Sakuma, Ikawa, Arimine, Okutadami and Kurobe dams, it is suggested how the mechanized construction method and the concrete cooling method, required for the dams over 100 meters high, were established. The details are as follows: (1) Both machinery operations at the project sites and the final works after the mechanized materials transportation were supported by highly skilled workers. (2) Pumps, vibrators and steel forms made in Japan were rapidly improved by trial and error, and they were systematized to achieve an effective dam construction method. (3) The concrete cooling method was established after some researches.

A neural network modeling approach has been developed to analyze human pilots' control by utilizing the recorded time history of visual cues and pilot control inputs. An experimental method is developed to record the time histories of visual cues and pilot control inputs by analyzing recorded video data at a real flight. The developed method makes it possible to obtain neural network model of a pilot at a real landing case. In this research, the reliability of this method is confirmed by comparing the video data with GPS/INS data. The obtained results of the contribution ratios and sensitivities reveal the characteristics of the pilot's control.

In this study, influences of lubricants for self-loosening and Fatigue characteristics have been investigated. The self-loosening tests and the fatigue test under transverse vibration were performed using three lubricants, machine oil ISO VG46, MoS_2 grease and special lubricant for bolt tightening. The results showed that the special lubricant for bolt tightening had higher strength for the self-loosening than MoS_2 grease. The results also showed that the apparent transverse fatigue limits using the special lubricant and MoS_2 grease had higher than the apparent transverse fatigue limits using machine oil.

An articulated bus plays an important role as a medium transportation vehicle in cities. This can be attributed to its high mobility and its ability to bend at its connection with a small revolution radius. This paper proposes a steering control strategy for articulated buses equipped with an all-wheel steering system to eliminate off-tracking. In this system, the center of each axle passes through the same locus, which is similar to the operation of trains. This control system was validated by means of a numerical simulation using a vehicle dynamics model and some experiments with scaled model vehicles.

Development of durable and efficient thermal protection systems against the reentry heating environments is one of the most important issues to realize the practical reusable launch vehicles in future. Recently, many researchers have been developing the various types of micro aerial vehicles (MAV). These developments are conducted on the basis of the computational and experimental fluid dynamics studies. We believe that the findings from the winged seed of plants would serve useful information for the development of such aerial vehicles. In this study, we investigated the gliding performance of the winged seed of Alsomitra macrocarpa. Furthermore, the microasperity structure on the surface of the seed was observed and measured using the conforcal laser microscope.

This paper describes education system using augmented reality technology. The system aims to offer useful information for the learner, to support intuitive study, and to improve the efficiency of the in-depth understanding and study. For the purpose the system that synthesizes information that seems to improve study to the image of the reality on real time was developed using augmented reality technology to mechatronics training, and study. Effects of the system were verified by the testee's using the system and being evaluated. It was confirmed that an educational system using the augmented reality technology was effective in intuitive study by the verification outcome.

This paper proposes a steering control strategy for new transport system equipped with an all-wheel steering system to achieve zero off-tracking running. In this system, the center of each axle passes through the same locus, which is similar to the operation of trains. The control system is composed of two parts-the feedforward and feedback controllers. A sliding mode controller as a nonlinear robust control is applied and imparts sufficient robustness by correcting the steeringangle. This control system was validated by means of numerical simulations using a multi degree of freedom vehicle dynamics model.

Electrochemical discharge machining (ECDM) is one of nontraditional processes for micro-fabrication of non-conductive materials. In this research, the effect of ultrasonic vibration in ECDM gravity-feed drilling of soda lime glass is investigated. The ultrasonic vibration is applied on a workpiece and affects ECDM in two ways; to change discharge behavior by influencing gas bubbles and gas film formation, and to improve electrolyte circulation. However, the discharge behavior by changing the gas bubbles and the gas film gives more dominant influence on machining result rather than the electrolyte circulation. It is found that the ultrasonic reduces material removal rate, but improves surface integrity of the hole.
