In order to realize ultra-low flying heights, magnetic spacing variations due to manufacturing tolerances, environmental variations, and write-induced thermal protrusion need to be reduced. To decrease the flying height, we have developed a thermal flying-height control (TFC) slider that carries a micro-thermal actuator. Using the device, the magnetic spacing of these sliders can be controlled in-situ during operation of the drive. First prototype had shown insufficient characteristics when evaluated at a component-level prototype. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to verify drive-level feasibility and better actuator characteristics. After analytical design by simulation of heat transfer and thermal deformation, second type of TFC device was fabricated. Component level evaluation showed sufficient actuator characteristics that met the requirements leading to the development of drives with controllable flying-height sliders. Drive level evaluation showed its effectiveness in reducing the magnetic spacing.

Today's head/disk interface design has a wide flying height distribution due to manufacturing tolerances, environmental variations, and write-induced thermal protrusion. To reduce the magnetic spacing loss due to these effects, we have developed an active head slider with nano-thermal actuator. The magnetic spacing of these sliders can be controlled in-situ during operation of the drive. After simulating the heat transfer in the slider and resulting thermal deformation of the air-bearing surface, we fabricated a thermal actuator by thin film processing. The evaluation by a read/write tester showed a linear reduction in magnetic height as electric power was applied to the actuator. The actuator's stroke was 2.5nm per 50mW with time constant of 1 msec. We found no significant impact to the reliability of the read element.

Measurement method of three-dimensional trajectory of forearm during baseball pitch using body-mounted sensor is discussed. From the optical motion capture system, it is estimated that the acceleration and the angular velocity of the arm reach up to 100 [G] and 8000 [deg/s], respectively, when the professional level baseball pitchers play the best throw. Three-dimensional, low gain accelerometers and gyroscopes in addition to high gain sensors are employed to avoid the saturation of the measured signals from the sensors. The trajectory and direction of the forearm are calculated based on the numerical integration of the acceleration and angular velocity. Integral errors are rejected by the definition of initial and final velocity, position and direction of the forearm. The experimental results showed that the estimated position and angle of the forearm highly corresponded with the video image. The proposed method enables easy, inexpensive and independent measurement from location.

The amplitude of negative stiffness of zero-power magnetic suspension depends on the gap between the electromagnet and the suspended object. It is a problem when such suspension is used in an active vibration isolation system because its stiffness against direct disturbance becomes lower when load is applied to the isolation table. This paper presents a nonlinear feedback control scheme for keeping the amplitude of negative stiffness constant. The efficacy of the derived control scheme is demonstrated experimentally.

In this paper a noise reduction of hole tone influenced by some configurations such as triangular tabs and rotational vanes has been described. As a result, the most effective number of tabs should be four with a tab height of one tenth of the nozzle diameter. The rotational vane enhances the mixing enhancement of the jet, but its rotation doesn't influence the noise reduction greatly. A standing wave of pressure fluctuation for a hole tone is produced not only at the outside of the jet, but also on the inside of the jet.

In this paper, Genetic Algorithm (GA) is adopted as the searching algorithm, and the Kriging model is used as the approximation model, for the study of the influence of the elasticity of the car tires on its noise performance. Finally, Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is used to study trade-off relationships between the objective functions.

We have been studying on a suspension as a new thermal storage material. The suspension is made from water and some additive with cooling and stirring. When designing the ice storage system using this suspension, the thermal conductivity of the suspension is essential. The purpose of this study is to measure a thermal conductivity of the ice-water suspension with good fluidity. The thermal conductivity was measured by a hot wire method. In this study, the relationship between thermal conductivity and IPF was clarified, and thermal conductivity was expressed as a function of IPF. Moreover, the uncertainty of measurement of the thermal conductivity was examined.

HTV is the transfer vehicle to carry cargoes to the International Space Station (ISS). This paper presents the outline of structural strength test results. The strength test were planed and performed to confirm that HTV principal structure (Propulsion Module) withstand the launch load. Test results approximately correspond to predictive value derived from numerical simulation.

The objective of the present study is to investigate an accuracy of the mixed interpolation of tensorial components triangular shell element proposed by Lee and Bathe in 2004 in geometrically nonlinear problems. A large deformation analysis of a pinched cylinder subjected to a concentrated load is conducted and the performance of MITC3 element comparing with the one by MITC4 element is discussed.

A survey was made to cover the recent development in the finite element analysis of shell structures. It was found that the considerable efforts have been made in the past five years to create new types of finite elements for analyzing various mechanical behaviors of shell structures, particularly of composite shell structures.

This paper describes a new optical switch based on MEMS techniques. This comprises two plates which have many electrodes on its surface and belt-shaped thin film mirrors which are put between the plates. The shape of the mirror is deformed by electrostatic force and the optical path is controlled. The switch has a simple structure and basically easy to assemble. It is easy to change a optical path greatly by a relatively small stress to act on the mirror. The pates and the mirror are made by MEMS techniques. In this paper, the principle of the optical switch is introduced and the behavior of the experimental switch is confirmed.

In the cafeterias, the flow of people not only becomes important factor of congestion, but also greatly influences their profits. To examine the solution for the people congestion, modifying the layout, evaluating the effects of changes, and finding the improvement ways need to be iterated again and again. However, we have attempted to solve this problem using simulation from view of time, cost, and avoidance of risk. In our research, as a subject, we took up a cafeteria where some congestion was observed, then analyzed the flow of people and built the simulation model. This paper reports the analysis of this cafeteria, and introduces each module of simulation model we have developed.

In the cafeterias, the flow of people not only becomes important factor of congestion, but also greatly influences their profits. We have attempted to solve this problem using simulation. In our research, we took up a cafeteria where some congestion was observed as a subject to analyze the flow of people. This paper introduces overview of the simulation using simulation model which is built from this analysis. Evaluation of the simulation performed with the use of this simulation model and its result also are reported. And then, we describe the consideration about the solution which was obtained as countermeasure of congestion relief.
