This is a report on the activities of the Research Committee on Neutron Shielding (Apr. 1970-Mar. 1973), Atomic Energy Society of Japan. The Committee studied the present status and problems in Japan and the trends in foreign countries in such fields as neutron reactor shielding, including transport calculations, duct streaming, spectroscopy, shielding optimization and cross sections for shielding calculations. Three working groups established in the Committee-Neutron Transport, Duct Streaming and Cross Section for Shielding-undertook such activities as (a) calculations of the five benchmark problems for testing computational methods in neutron transport, (b) a survey of theoretical and experimental approaches to duct streaming, and (c) intercomparison of nuclear data for particular nuclides related to shielding in data libraries such as ENDF/B-I, III, KFK-120 and -750.

This report intended to review the physical characteristics and present status on the fast breeder reactor. In the first section, the neutron energy distribution, neutron spatial distribution, power distribution and some consideration of the design of the fast reactor are described in order to evaluate the breeding potentiality. In the next section, the kinetics and control characteristics of the fast reactor, such as the prompt neutron life time, effective delayed neutron fraction, reactivity change due to temperature change and power instability atc. are discussed. The last section summarizes the experimental results with critical assemblies in the world.

It has been generally considered that the radioactive air-borne dusts, which are produced by a nuclear explosion and reach an area far distant from the test ground, are very fine and that their radioactivities are distributed in the atmosphere comparatively uniformly. But, after the reopening of the nuclear test explosions by U.S.S.R. on September of 1961, the measured values of radioactivity in rain water differed much from each other, even though they were obtained at nearby laboratories at the same time. Moreover, it was reported that strongly radioactive particles, the counting. rates of which exceeded 10, 000 cpm, were found on the roof after rain fall by a GM counter at Niigata University. In order to reveal this question, we took the autoradiographs of the air-borne dusts collected on filter papers. It was concluded that the radioactive air-borne dusts produced by a nuclear explosion were composed of many particles having radioactivities quite various in magnitude and that strongly radioactive particles were present even in long-range fallout especially just after a nuclear explosion. This situation is in marked contrast to that observed in the natural radioactivities which are distributed in the atmosphere quite uniformly. Under these circumstances, following problems are proposed.<br>(1) Is it unnecessary to establish the standard method for the accurate measurement of fallout especially just after a large scale nuclear explosion?<br>(2) Does'nt it make mistake from the view point of the radiological protection to base on the today's M.P.C., even when the radioactive fallout visits in the manner stated above?

現在,各国において種々の大強度高エネルギー加速器施設の建設計画が進められており,加速器を利用して得られる様々な放射線を用いた研究が,今後ますます盛んになることが予想される。大型加速器施設では,加速器の運転に伴い発生する高エネルギー放射線と,それにより生成される放射化物などに対する安全対策が重要になるが,原子炉施設とは異なる加速器施設特有の問題もある。本稿では,その一つである高エネルギー加速器施設における放射化と,それに基づく内部被ばくの問題について,加速器施設の安全管理の経験から得られた知見を中心に紹介する。

Japan depends most of her energy resources on foreign countries. Therefore, nuclear power generation is considered to be very important, but known domestic uranium resources are very rare. Hence, extraction of uranium from seawater has become of interest. Many investigations on this project have been carried out including the research programme by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan. The selections of the chemical processes, development of adsorbents mainly on hydrous titanium oxide, the elution process, the recovery of eluate by steam stripping or electrodialysis, secondary concentrations, the conceptual designs of the commercial plants, and some tentative cost estimations will be described.

原子力安全を確保する手法は複数あることを見出した。すなわち概念設計を含めて原子炉炉型はCP-1型原子炉とULOF型原子炉に分類される。ULOF型の設計概念のNo Evacuation Reactorは,来世紀の原子力エネルギー供給システムとして高い評価が与えられる。そのシステムの持つべき特性と実用化への道を記述した。世界的環境問題に対応し,併せて我が国の原子力の活性の維持を期待している。

According to the construction of the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant, a telemeter system for monitoring external environmental radiation around plant was equipped. This system has six monitoring stations and collects the γ-ray spectrum every 10min at each station. The spectrum was analyzed by response matrix method, and the artificial contributions piled up natural background were separately evaluated.
