It becomes more important to reduce the noise generated from Shinkansen train for further speed-up of Shinkansen. We developed the high-speed test train "FASTECH360" that has new equipment such as low-noise pantographs, "multi-segment slider", pantograph noise insulation plates and sound-absorbing panels for the noise from the lower area of car bodies. We investigated the noise distribution of "FASTECH360" by using a spiral microphone array, and we have taken countermeasures for the noise sources of "FASTECH360" based on the primary results of high-speed tests. Currently, the results show that the noise level of "FASTECH360" at the speed of 330km/h is approximately equal to that of the present commercial train at the speed of 275km/h (at a distance of 25m from the track).

In recent years global environmental problems become aggravated, the shift to the sustainable society is required. The quantitative environmental load assessment is necessary to achieve the sustainable society. Though various LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method is developed for such a demand, it is pointed out that there are a lot of problems in existing LCA. To solve such problems, Eco-Efficiency Potential Assessment (E2-PA) was developed. In this paper, we study on Hazardous Intensity (HI). HI is Materials and Energy for taking hazardous substances into harmless as Potential, but the process for taking hazardous substances into harmless is not decided. So in this research HI is alternated by two methods (Method 1: alternate by the intensity for virgin resources. Method 2: alternate by the ratio of hazardous factor to the standard substance). Then we show the products' assessment result by using alternated HI, and compares it with other LCA. As a result, validity as the potential evaluation of E2-PA is shown.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior of biomass gasification in the packed-bed, conducting gasification experiment and analysis of syn-gas in the reactor. In this study, pellets of black pine (ψ6.5mm×8.5mm) are fed intermittently with air as the gasification agent. The gasification experiments were carried out by two type gasification methods, such as updraft and downdraft setups. In the gasification tests, the temperature distribution in the gasification reactor and the gas compositions are measured and analyzed during gasification by thermo-couples inserted from a furnace wall and a micro gas chromatograph, respectively. Product gas before cooling were sampled for determine the amount of tar generation.

In recent years, the heat island phenomenon is paid attention. The various method are studied as a heat island measure. Interlocking that at present, used various recycling material as one method to the road surface is developed. The interlocking block is being laid in the sidewalk and parking place. Interlocking that I used to this research can save a rain water into the block, from that is made with a an aperture material unlike usual interlocking. Also, a rain water is able to expect even the effect that easy to penetrate into a foundation and increase cultivation to subterranean water and cause the outflow to subterranean water security and drain controlled. Thereupon, I did examination about the temperature reduction effect by the difference of the specimen with this research.

The temperature of sea water is lower than the outside air temperature in summer, and higher than the outside air temperature in winter. Therefore, high energy efficiency can be obtained by utilizing sea water for heat source water or cooling water of heat pumps. Then, we had developed the highly effective heat pump, which can use sea water directly as heat source or cooling water. In the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium, the water temperature of huge pools for breeding orca, belugas, etc., is adjusted with this highly effective heat pump system. In this paper, the energy-saving performance and environmental preservation performance of the system are clarified by analyzing the operation data over a period of four fiscal years.

A rest room is required in comfortable living space. So this paper describes the improvement of sound quality of toilet flushing sound. An acrylic board model is made for taking a picture of the flushing mechanism by a high-speed video camera. It is found that the flushing sound generates broken bubble in water current, and the frequency characteristics of the sound depend on the size of the bubble. The relationship between sound pressure level of the flushing sound and sound quality is investigated by comparing with the bubble shape.

Recently, it is necessary to give the additional value to a basic performance of the equipment to be lost of a remarkable difference. Then, it focus on the shutter sound of the camera in this research. It aims to give the quality of sound as an additional value by making comfortable shutter sound. In aiming at making comfortable shutter sound, sound quality evaluation is used. However, when the sound quality evaluation is repeated whenever the sound is changed by a simulation and a structural modification. Then, the regression in a sound quality evaluation result and psychoacoustic parameters is made by using regression analysis. Whether it is possible to provide the directionality of sound quality is verified without sound quality evaluation.

National criteria for the assessment of low frequency noise annoyance in Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Poland and U.K. were reviewed, and the basic concepts were compared. The Experience from these countries in applying the criteria was also reviewed, and a common difficulty of these criteria in practice was showed. Japanese criterion, "Reference values of mental and physical discomfort" was compared with these criteria, and the advantages and the problems were discussed for future improvements in the criteria.

This is a description of new technologies that we have started to develop for a heat exchanger and pump unit, focusing attention on energy saving in the heat transmission of air-conditioning systems. The heat source of this system uses an absorption chiller/heater, while the indoor units are general-purpose air conditioner. Water is used to transmit heat vertically through the building, whereas HFC refrigerant is used to transmit it horizontally. The HFC is conveyed to the indoor unit by a low-head pump. One of the most important benefits is that energy consumption of heat transmission can be reduced approximately by 50% compared to heat transmission by water and approximately by 10% compared to heat transmission by refrigerant. This can be achieved by no water head and latent heat of HFC.

These days, household affairs such as night time vacuum cleaning and machine-washing have become commonplace because of dense residential areas and diversified living styles, resulting in the increasing necessity for low-noise electrical household appliances. Specifically, noise reduction for a compact-size electrical vacuum cleaner is difficult because it incorporates a high-speed motor in it. Catalog specifications itself cannot provide purchasers with real sensation of noise. Accordingly, they result in confirming the actual noise when they use it at home. Human also discriminates noises in terms of sound quality. Our experiment confirmed that the improvement in sound quality of noises radiated from the vacuum cleaner considerably contributes to the psychological noise reduction. Based on the results, we have installed a specially designed acoustic filter, a Helmholz resonator, into a vacuum cleaner, which is capable of absorbing harmonic high-level noise components involved in the motor rotation, thus alleviating users' sense of discomfort against the noises from the vacuum cleaner.

We, human being, hear 'twitter of birds', 'stream sound' etc. as comfortable sound. On the other hand, we hear 'sound scratching window', 'sound scrubbing styrene foam' etc. as uncomfortable noise. What is the difference between them? In this paper, the uncomfortable rates of 16 daily hearing sounds were evaluated at first, using method of paired comparison. Then, those sounds were analyzed by the human auditory model and wavelet analysis in order to find out causes of discomfort. Such characteristics of comfort and discomfort were found out that the former has calm rising up and down and the later has steep rising up and down, and that the former has sinusoidal vibratos in high frequency region and the later has irregular ones. But the auditory indexes which can evaluate the noisiness of machines were proved hardly to have correlation with uncomfortable rate.

The paper reports on the development of a condensing water heater with a thermal efficiency of 95 percent (based on the net calorific value at maximum rated output) and thermal output of 35 kilowatts. The thermal efficiency of conventional instantaneous water heaters is around 80%. Fitting a highly durable latent heat exchanger to recover even the latent heat in the steam in the exhaust gas gives the unit a thermal efficiency of 95%, a world best for an instantaneous water heater. The unit is equipped with a full primary combustion ceramic burner, reducing emissions of NO_x (crucial to global environmental protection) to 30ppm, half the level of emissions of current low NO_x water heaters. The heater was injected into the market in October 1999.
