In about 1950, the surrounding coastal cities began to deposit in Osaka Bay the human excreta that could not be used or disposed of on land. In connection, researchers from the Osaka Municipal Hygienic Laboratory undertook a rapid survey of the state of pollution in the Bay and established that, while pollution was present in the sea disposal area, it was severer at the mouth of rivers. After the survey, the researchers joined the research committee chaired by Professor Miura of Kyoto University, which operated with the aid of the Scientific Experimental Research Fund of the Ministry of Education, and studied pollution in Osaka Bay, the effect of sea disposal on fish, the behavior of the deposited excreta in the sea, and the viability of E. coli in seawater.The present material was written to commemorate the work of the Hygienic Laboratory in the study of human excreta disposal in Osaka Bay. It consists of a history of human excreta treatment and disposal in Osaka City up to the beginning of sea disposal, related laws during the same period, the situation regarding sea disposal and pollution in the Bay, and the activities of a committee of Osaka Bay coastal cities set up to research human excreta disposal problems.

Recently, there have been fears that an influenza pandemic is approaching in the near future and the importance of preventing infection has often been discussed. The possibility of controlling the evolution of virulence has however received less attention. In the present paper, I first introduce the evolutionary ecology of infectious disease virulence based on the existing theoretical work and then explain three possible selection pressures that favor very serious virulence and suggest promising methods to reduce the effect of each. Most of these methods are consistent with methods to prevent the spread of infection, while one also emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in the elimination of poverty and conflict. I suggest thus that evolutionary ecological thinking has the potential to provide a new point of view in the control of infectious diseases.

To evaluate the effect of natto and soybeans on postprandial blood glucose level, a crossover study was conducted in 12 healthy male volunteers.<BR>Subjects were given a control meal (white rice), a natto meal (white rice with natto), or a soybean meal (white rice with steamed soybeans), and blood glucose level in each group was measured before and 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 minutes after intake.<BR>After both the soybean and natto meals, the blood glucose level at 60 minutes after intake was significantly lower than after the control meal. However, only the natto meal, and not the soybean meal, significantly suppressed the rise in blood glucose level at 60 minutes compared to the control meal. Furthermore, the area under the glucose curve from 0 to 120 min after the natto meal was significantly smaller than for the control meal.<BR>These results suggest that natto is useful for the control of postprandial blood glucose level.

This is an interpretative article for better understanding of trends in bioethanol, starting from the historical background of the primary energy requirements indicated in the 2nd IPCC Report. Methods for production of bioethanol from biomass are briefly described with emphasis on the advantages of enzymatic decomposition of biomass, especially soft cellulosic biomass. The energy efficiency of bioethanol production from soft biomass is computed using results obtained from a model study in which the ethanol raw material was cut grass from golf courses. The role of mega-cities as producers of bioethanol and related new energy forms are also discussed.
