The Heian Period witnessed the development of various techniques for adding decoration to costumes, applying decorations directly to the fabric, in order to give the costumes new qualities. This paper uses archival material from the period to analyze examples of costume-decoration techniques, illustrating their types and uses and considering their purposes and effects. The techniques studied include uchi, kaineri, euzu, uchiyauzu, hari, hihegi, and kobari, all of which provided luster, shine, and fi rmness to the costumes. Most decorated costumes were worn as an inner, rather than an outer layer; thus, the effects were only partly visible, although the overall appearance of the costume was enhanced through the effect of layering. It seems, indeed, that these techniques were more than designs intended simply to add patterns and color to costumes, but were in fact luxuries created for the pursuit of decorative beauty.

The main purpose of this paper is to find a clue to create the inclusive history of pragmatism by examining Misak's new study on this subject. The trait of Misak's version of the intellectual history of pragmatism consists in legitimating Peirce's pragmatism while as degrading James' pragmatism. And also she grasps pragmatism as a part of modern analytic philosophy, not as a development of German idealism. Four subjects are set up in order to achieve the purpose of this paper. First we survey the main types of the interpretation of the intellectual history of pragmatism, and position Misak's new research in them. Next, we adjudicate whether Peirce's pragmatism can be justified as representative of pragmatism in general in comparison with James' pragmatism. Third, we critically consider Misak's interpretation of the intellectual history of pragmatism. Finally, we specify the configuration of the interpretations of the intellectual history of pragmatism by analyzing pragmatist's conception of truth. Our analysis of these four areas leads to the conclusion that Misak's interpretation can not be justified. We would like to construct the history of pragmatism as efforts to integrate naturalism and historicism.

Every culture systematizes natural phenomena in its own way. Consider the number of colors of rainbow. Before the early Edo period, Japanese belived the rainbow had either 3 or 5 colors, depending on wether the Chinese theory of "Inyo-Gogyo-Setsu" or the old European astronony was applted. Following Newton's theory on the 7 color rays of sun, though, the Japanese bigan to see 7 color bands in the rainbow.

Nothing expresses the essence and thinking of classical Chinese culture and literature better than the palindrome, although palindromes themselves are not highly ranked. Exhibiting the tendency of classical Chinese literature to present everything in dyads, and to highly value the never-ending cycle between two poles, palindromes are also recognized in the iconography of the Book of Changes (I Ching, 易経), in which the symbols of the 64 hexagrams are arranged as iconographic palindromes. It might be said that these 64 hexagrams represent the "Mandala" of Chinese cosmology. This paper examines and discusses the hypothesis that if it is true that a palindrome is hidden in this Mandala, then not only Chinese cosmology, but Chinese literature in its entirety as a cultural concept is characterized by the phenomenon of the palindrome.

This essay provides an overview of Canadian nation-building, deals with the British and Canadian regulations on nationality and citizenship, and examines how they affected each other. The process of Canada’s independence is sometimes referred to as “evolution,” in contrast to the American “Revolution.” Starting from British colonies, Canada achieved independence in stages, gradually separating from Britain: promotion to a Dominion, autonomous diplomacy, the British Commonwealth of Nations, and the patriation of the constitutional law from London. The same applies to Canadian nationality and citizenship. The origin of the concepts lies in the status of the British subject, inherited by the common law. Then, critical points came with the following regulations: (1) the British Naturalization Act of 1870, which finished up the traditional nationality system, defining the British subject based on the common law, (2) a series of Canadian laws from the 1910s to the 1920s on immigration, naturalization, and nationality, referring to Canadian citizenship and nationality for the first time, with the British Nationality and Status of Aliens Act 1914, which provided the common code over the status of the British subject, (3) the Canadian Citizenship Act 1946, which radically changed the relations between the concepts of British subject and Canadian citizenship, followed by the British Nationality Act 1948, which introduced a new classification of the British subject.

「瀝青」は松脂を原義とするが、現在は原油から取れるアスファルトやコールタールやピッチの意味で用いられている。この意味は二つの西洋の文化との接触によって生じたものである。 その一つは聖書である。モリソンが聖書を漢訳しようとした時、中国語にはアスファルトを意味する語がなかった。そこで彼は似たものを指す「瀝青」を用いた。この「瀝青」の意味はヘボンによって日本に伝えられたようであり、『和英語林集成』第3版 (1886刊) にその意味が初出する。 もう一つは近代鉱物学である。当初鉱物学者たちはアスファルトなどを「土瀝青」また「地瀝青」と訳したが、後には「瀝青」とだけ言うようになった。現在我々が用いている「瀝青」この鉱物学会の術語であったと考えられる The old Chinese word rekisei mean "pine resin". Now it refers to asphalt, cortar and pitch. This change meaning was caused by the acceptance of two types of Western knowledge. The first was the Holy Bible. When R. Morison translated the Holy Bible into Chinese, — there was no Chinese word for asphalt, so he used rekisei. This new meaning was introduced into Japanese by J. C. Hepburn’s "Japanese-English and English-Japanese Dictionary" third edition (1886). The second type of knowledge was mineralogy. Japanese mineralogist had previously used the translation do-rekisei and chi-rekisei (do and chi means "earth") for "asphalt" but do and chi gradually came to be left off, so the current term is rekisei for asphalt, cortar and pitch.

The word "Kaseki", meaning "fossil" was made in Japan in the Edo-Period. At that time people thought that fossils were condensed spirits. But after the word was used to transelate "fossil" in geology book, it was comprehend as now.

Drug therapy with steroids and moisturizers is highly effective for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, but the use of steroids is dependent on the stage of the patient’s disease. Shiunkou is a Kampo topical ointment with a purple tinge called shicon. It has been reported to be used clinically in combination with a moisturizer; however its stability has not been described. In this study, we investigated the stability of Shiunkou and Hirudoid Soft Ointment when mixed. The simplest method for measuring stability is to observe changes in appearance. The mixed ointment did not change during refrigerated storage for up to 7 months. When stored at room temperature, oil separation occurred after the first month, and became more remarkable with time, such as at 3 months and 7 months. It has been shown that the ointment mixture should be stored refrigerated rather than stored at room temperature. When the stability of shicon, which is an active ingredient of Shiunkou, was examined in an aqueous solution, it decomposed very quickly regardless of the pH. Hirudoid Soft Ointment is a w/o preparation and contains water. When the ointment is mixed, and shicon, a the component of Shiunkou, comes into contact with the water contained in the Hirudoid Soft Ointment, there is a concern that the content of shicon in the ointment mixture may decrease, even if by a small amount or for a short time.

The Chinese character luan (亂) bears two contradictory meanings: “chaos” and “order.” Scholar and commentator Guo Pu (郭璞, 276-324) was the first to note the phenomenon of a single character possessing two diametrically opposed meanings. Over the centuries, theories about the phenomenon have proliferated, a debate which has given rise to the scholarly term fanxun (反訓, enantiosemy).Those who resist the concept of fanxun claim that these contradictory meanings are more recently accreted additions that result from the process of jiajie (仮借, phonetic borrowing) rather than meanings that inhere in the character from the start. Supporters of the idea of fanxun -- especially contemporary supporters -- attempt to parse the contradictory meanings as a dialectical conflict.In contrast to these viewpoints, the present paper advances two claims. The first is that, when taking into account the conventions of character creation and the history of character development, the phenomenon of a single character bearing two diametrically opposed meanings is the result of the phenomena of zhuanzhu (転注, derivative cognates) and jiajie (仮借, phonetic borrowing). That is, this paper asserts, even if one accepts the claim that the second, contradictory meaning was a later accretion through the process of jiajie, the conventions of character creation make the appearance of fanxun inevitable. Meanwhile, zhuanzhu and jiajie are conventions of character creation that work to increase the number of characters and the meanings that they bear, and both are based in the same sources of sound and meaning.From this foundation, the paper offers an additional formulation: “opposite meanings, intimately entwined (相反相因, xiangfan xiangyin).” That is, the paper asserts that a character that bears diametrically opposed meanings is not to be understood as a dialectic, but as “opposite meanings, intimately entwined” (i.e., contradictions which exist in intimate relation to each other) -- an understanding of the phenomenon that is characteristically Chinese.

For creators in musical theatre in the United States, William Shakespeareʼs plays have been a great source of inspiration. Early successes in Shakespeare musical adaption like The Boys from Syracuse (1938), Kiss Me, Kate (1948), and West Side Story (1957) are regarded astrue masterpieces in the history of musicals.The Shakespeare craze in U.S. musicals, however, really took hold from the late 1960s, when rock and other new popular genres of music began to change the scene of American musicals. Your Own Thing (1968) and Two Gentlemen of Verona (1971), both based on Shakespearean comedies, are now “rock musical” classics. In the new millennium, the musical world is having another surge of works inspired by Shakespeareʼs works, and the figure of Shakespeare as a playwright also appears in a variety of forms on the musical stage.This paper traces the history of American musicals related to Shakespeare and his works to show how various elements of Shakespearean plays and Shakespeare himself as a liberating figure in popular theatrical culture have been helping creators of musicals deal with the latestcultural and political issues in each new generation.

This study explores the relationships of experiences abused by respondentsʼ own parents on the developmental stage and the readiness-for-parenthood cultivated by adolescence in female undergraduates. The Abused Experiences Scale developed by the authors and the Readiness-for-Parenthood Scale (Nishida & Moroi, 2010) were administered to female undergraduates (N=469). By the cluster analysis (Wardʼs method, squared Euclidean distance) for the Abused Experiences Scale, seven clusters appeared; Verbal aggression, indifference, reproof, neglect, violence, corporal punishment, and intimidation. The factor analysis of the Readiness-for-Parenthood Scale indicated four factors: concern for the child and baby, positive expectancy of a parental role, father as a role model, and anxiety about parenting in the future. According to the covariance structure analysis, as predicted, abused experiences negatively affected the readiness for parenthood. Verbal aggression by parents was the dominant negative factor. The significance of research is discussed from the point of view of motherhood.

In August 1925, Yokomitsu Riichi (1898-1947), who had been hailed as the leader of the Neo-Sensualist movement, published the short story ‘Machi no Soko’, in the magazine ‘Bungei Jidai’. This work appeared at a time when, as the critic Hirano Ken has pointed out, the Japanese world of letters was dominated by the sanpa teiritsu, i.e., the three-cornered contest between the already established realistic literature, the proletarian literature, and the new novel of the 20th century. This paper aims to show that ‘Machi no Soko’ has features that challenge both realistic and proletarian literature, while bringing to the fore its modernist characteristics.

Recently, the use of internet sites and social networking services has spread especially among young people. If we use them, we can exchange ideas and informations with various people. However, some students create web pages, videos, profiles, etc., which ridicule other students in order to use as the method of bullying. Cyberbullying is different from off-line bullying at various points. Therefore, it cannot be said that the policies against bullying are sufficient and suitable as policies against cyberbullying.The purpose of this study is to analyze the judicial precedents and theories concerning restrictions on cyberbullying in the United States. The first chapter describes laws and policies against bullying and cyberbullying. The second chapter describes and analyzes the legal cases concerning the freedom of students' expressions. Finally, the third chapter analyzes constitutionality of restrictions against on-line expressions of students.
