In this review, we present the current situation of designs of biomaterials using techniques of informatics. In particular, we discuss the prediction the responses of proteins and cells toward materials and data-driven design of new biomaterials. We introduce our recent work, in which we analyzed the correlation among chemical structures of molecules constituting self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), amounts of adsorbed protein, a density of adhered platelets by machine learning using an artificial neural network model. The main conclusion is that the quality of the database is a critical factor in determining the accuracy of the prediction and material design. We also discuss technical issues to develop databases efficiently and systematically to expand the possibility of data-driven strategies to design biomaterials.

Non-equilibrium processes such as nucleation are difficult to observe in situ using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) because of spatiotemporal stochastic process. Therefore, we have been developing a method to predict/detect nucleation events and observe under low electron doses conditions in real time with the support of machine learning. Low electron dose observation is important to avoid radiolysis of water in the observation of aqueous solutions using liquid-cell TEM. Our data-driven TEM that can suggest observation points to the operator by processing in situ observation data in real time. In other words, it is data-driven TEM in which the TEM helps the operator, rather than the TEM being driven by the data. By incorporating the two codes into the TEM's software, nucleation can now be observed efficiently.

The paper presents the results of electrical property measurements for submicron-scale bubbles (Ultra Fine Bubble, UFB) as a property that includes correlation with water. The relationship between the concentration of UFBs and average size and the electrical conductivity of water is shown, confirming that the presence of UFBs generated by oxygen gas decreases the electrical conductivity of water. In addition, the internal pressure was directly detected using the perturbation angle correlation method, and a lower internal pressure (about 3.4 atmospheres) than theoretical was measured. We proposed the use of ultrasonic waves as a simple detection method for bubbles, including the distinction between UFBs and impurities, and are still measuring the bubbles.

Hayabusa2 explored a near-Earth C-type asteroid (162173) Ryugu for 17 months (June 2018–November 2019) including two landing operations for sample collection. Ryugu has a top shape with an equatorial ridge, and its bulk density of 1.19±0.03 g cm-3 suggests that Ryugu is a rubble-pile body with a large macro-porosity of ∼50–60%. The surface has a very low geometric albedo (∼0.02), darker than most of meteorite samples, and shows a weak but ubiquitous 2.72-µm absorption feature of hydrous minerals. The surface samples will be delivered to the Earth at the end of 2020. Detailed analysis of Ryugu samples will reveal the history of Ryugu and the Solar System from the beginning to the present.

Recent first-principles studies on step structures and adatom diffusion on SiC(0001) surfaces are reviewed. SiC is a promising material for next-generation power electronics, and SiC power devices are already on the market. The obtained formation energies of all the possible atomic steps provide a definite identification of the most relevant atomic step for two vicinal directions inclined toward either <1100> or <1120> direction on SiC(0001) surfaces. Relations between the energetics of surface steps and macroscopic step morphology are discussed. Diffusion mechanism for Si, C, and H adatoms which are three important chemical elements of gas sources of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for SiC is revealed both on the surface terraces and near the surface steps.

Data-driven materials development using first-principles calculations (materials informatics, MI) is widely known. Process informatics (PI), which explores crystal growth processes, is expected to be pioneered as the next research target in materials development. However, simulation techniques for the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, which is the core of PI, have not been developed. This paper describes recent progress in simulation technology for CVD processes, with a particular focus on surface modeling.

A planetary atmosphere is the gaseous layer that divides the planetary surface and surrounding space. Although the Earth's atmosphere occupies a tiny fraction of the total Earth's mass, it plays an essential role to make the Earth's surface environment circulating liquid-water that is thought to be the most fundamental condition for the emergence and evolution of the terrestrial life organisms. The vertical structure of Earth's atmosphere from the Earth's surface to the uppermost region that merges into space is strongly influenced by interactions with space.

Digital Annealer developed by Fujitsu is a new architecture to solve “combinatorial optimization problems” at high speed with digital circuit inspired by quantum phenomena. The features are stable operation with digital circuit at room temperature, easy miniaturization, and easy mapping more complex problems with a fully-connected architecture. The Digital Annealer is easy to apply actual problems and contributes to customers in a wide range of businesses, including drug discovery, chemistry, manufacturing, transportation, finance, and logistics. In this article, we explain the fundamental of the Digital Annealer including the speedup technique. We also introduce an application to the material development using the Digital Annealer. The Digital Annealer is used to evaluate the structural similarity of the flavor molecules. We found that the molecules with high structural similarity show a similar flavor. We also extracted the common substructure of molecules having the similar flavor, which is considered to be the key structure of the flavor.

Photocatalytic steam-methane reforming is an attractive chemical technology for hydrogen production from abundant resources of methane and water. In the case of photocatalytic reaction, photo-generated electron plays key roles in hydrogen production. However, the dynamics of photogenerated electrons under reaction condition have been unclear. To uncover the behavior of reactive photo-excited electrons, we conducted operando FT-IR spectroscopy of metal loaded Ga2O3 photocatalysts under irradiation of intensity modulated UV light. We succeeded in observing a correlation between the reaction activity and a broad mid-infrared absorption band derived from the photo-generated electrons shallowly trapped at the photocatalyst surfaces.

<p>Since ion-sensitive field effect transistors (ISFETs) have been developed in 1970, much attention has been focused on FET-based biosensors. In particular, graphene is one of the promising candidates for FET-based biosensors owing to their high electron/hole mobilities and unique 2D nature. Herein, we report specific detection of biomolecules using sialylglycopeptide-modified graphene FET (G-FET) biosensors. In addition, we also present state-space models (SSMs) to analyze time-series data of G-FET biosensors. This computational approach helps to separate the response against target biomolecules from the baseline drifted data. G-FET biosensors open the door to a more versatile sensing platform for biomolecules and biological functions.</p>

In this paper, we report construction of neural network potentials (NNPs) of Au-Li binary systems based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and analyses of alloying properties. To accelerate construction of NNPs, we proposed an efficient method of structural dataset generation using the symmetry function-based principal component analysis. We investigated the mixing energy of Au1-xLix with fine composition grids, which were achieved owing to the lower computational cost of NNPs. The obtained results agree well with the DFT values, where we found previously unreported stable compositions. In addition, we examined the alloying process starting from the phase separated structure to the complete mixing phase using Au/Li superlattice structures. We found that when multiple adjacent Au atoms dissolved into Li, the alloying of the entire Au/Li interface started from the dissolved region. These results demonstrate the applicability of NNPs toward miscible phase and provides the understanding of the alloying mechanism.
