Thermodynamic properties such as density, heat capacities, speed of sound, enthalpy, entropy, and other properties, can be calculated from a single thermodynamic equation of state in the case of pure fluids. Equation of state representing Helmholtz free energy provides those property values accurately in wide gaseous, liquid, and supercritical phases even at high temperatures and pressures by only differential procedures, which is sometimes called as fundamental equation of state. For many important fluids like water, air, carbon dioxide, ammonia, methane, isobutane, methanol, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), the fundamental equations of state have already been established. This article introduces these fundamental equations of state and the background of them. Some latest aspects obtained in our group on thermodynamic equations of state are also introduced.

Recent progress of the technology of large-scale high pressure apparatus have permitted us to produce synthetic diamond powders in larger quantities at a lower cost. The advances in high-pressure and high-temperature control technique have enabled the commercialization of high-purity large synthetic diamond crystals. In this article, recent advances and future prospects in the high-pressure apparatus technology for synthetic diamonds are described.

High pressure treatment of microbial cells and plant and animal tissues at 100-400 MPa solubilizes cellular compounds such as metals, amino acids, and proteins, permeates extra-cellular compounds such as salts into cells and tissues, and causes hemolysis. After the pressure treatment, electron microscopic observation of yeast cells and biochemical analysis of animal tissues reveal a significant membrane breakage of nuclei, lysosomes, and vacuoles in addition to light cell membrane and cell wall damage. To understand these observed phenomena at the molecular level, we studied functional and structural changes of the membrane-bound Na+, K+-ATPase under increasing high pressure (in situ observation), and reached an interesting conclusion that contact faces of lipid and membrane-penetrating protein surfaces are reversibly separated to produce tunnels or holes at 100-250 MPa, followed by disordered breakdown of the membrane system including protein denaturation at 300 MPa or higher. This conclusion is well supported by the phase transition of the lipid bilayer membrane.

First of all, hydrogen energy related government budgets in Japan, USA and EU were summarized. Among a number of required technology to introduce hydrogen society, the hydrogen storage technique was focused in this article. The technique is classified in three ways, such as pressurized hydrogen, liquid hydrogen and hydrogen storage medium tank. In each technique, the high pressure science and technology is important to materialize applications of hydrogen storage systems. In addition, the recent research of new hydrides prepared by autoclave synthesis and high-pressure work in solid-state was also mentioned.

Knowledge of distribution and transport mechanism of melt in the Earth and planetary interiors is important for understanding formation process of stratified structure, estimation of melt fraction in partial molten region, and volatile recycling. In this article, advances in high pressure studies on melt distribution and its transport process were reviewed in terms of surface tension-driven process. Melt migration in solid media is controlled by melt connectivity. A traditional way to determine melt connectivity is determination of dihedral angle by quench experiments. Recently, in situ X-ray radiographic observation or electrical conductivity measurement are developing as effective ways to determine melt morphology. At the end of this article, an example of melt penetration experiments is reported. High pressure experiments on penetration of metallic iron alloy melt into lower mantle phases suggest absence of interaction between core and mantle by surface-tension driven penetration mechanism.

We describe a simple setup to observe H2O ice VI single crystals under high pressure by using transparent Bridgman anvils with a compact hydraulic oil cylinder. It is confirmed that growth and melting of the ice VI single crystal was clearly observed as reported in diamond anvil cell experiments. Furthermore, this setup allows students starting to learn high pressure experiments to understand the opposed anvil technique because the anvils are not only easy to manipulate but also visible even when pressure is generated.

Tungsten carbide based hardmetals have been used for the cylinders and anvils of high pressure apparatus, because of their high hardness, compressive strength and Young's modulus. In this article, tungsten carbide based hardmetals used for each high pressure apparatus are reviewed. In addition, newly developed ultra-fine grained binderless hardmetal TJS01 is introduced.

Very soon after their production was started, Komatsu Diamond Co. recieved, in June 1963, a letter from GE warning of possible infringement on their registered patent rights. This was the kickoff of a years long series of law suits between the two parties. Upon the registration of their “belt” apparatus patent in 1964, GE lodged, unsuccessfully, an application for a provisional court order to prohibit Komatsu's use of the brand-new apparatuses. The definitive proceedings began in late 1965, and legal inspectors came to the plant for the first time in 1966. The point of dispute was based on the difference in interpretation of the function of, particularly, the die lined with the ceramic sleeve.

Contamination of oysters with human noroviruses is an important issue in food safety because oysters are often consumed raw. Hydrostatic pressure treatments have been revealed to be effective for inactivation of noroviruses in oysters in other countries. We therefore confirmed the effectiveness of hydrostatic pressure treatments in inactivating noroviruses in oysters using a genetic method developed in our previous studies. To increase the application of hydrostatic pressure treatments in the fishing industry, it is necessary to understand the technique, advertise it to the public, and reach an agreement regarding the commercial or legal handling of foods processed in this manner.

H2O is an important volatile material in the Earth, and it affects the physical properties (e. g. density, elastic velocity, viscosity, rheobgical property, diffusion, electrical conductivity and melting temperature) of the Earth's materials. Recently, it has been darified that significant amounts of H2O can be accommodated in β and γ phases of olivine, which means that the mantle transition zone has the potential of being a water reservoir in the Earth. In this paper, I review the H2O contents, lattice parameters and elastic properties of hydrous β and γ phases, the effect of H2O on the phase transformation of olivine, and the possibilities of water transportation into the mantle transition zone are discussed on the basis of these experimental data.

We have carried out x-ray diffraction, small-angle x-ray scattering and high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering measurements for supercritical fluid Hg accompanying the metal-nonmetal (M-NM) transition using synchrotron radiation at SPring-8. In these structural studies we have found an increase in the short-range correlation length and the dynamical sound velocity much faster than the adiabatic sound velocity in the M-NM transition region. These findings strongly suggest the existence of a peculiar fluctuation intrinsic to the M-NM transition in the fluid, which may reflect a first-order M-NM transition predicted by Landau, the winner of the Nobel Prize in physics.

The so-called “Missing Xe” problem is a long standing unsolved problem and is related to many fields in Earth science: formation process and evolution of the Earth, origin and evolution of the atmosphere, and geochemistry. Although the long-held expectation was the retention of xenon in the iron-rich core, present experimental result clarified that it is unlikely to occur. This implies that we have to reconsider the missing xenon problem and encourage many scientists to pursuit other possibilities.

Molecular dynamics computer simulation technique has been applied to investigate fluid phase change mechanisms near vapor-liquid interfaces. The simulation enables us to estimate the most relevant parameter, condensation coefficient αc, which is the ratio of condensation flux to vapor collision flux. We found: (i) αc is less than unity even for simple fluids, and αc of associating fluids is much less than that. (ii) There is a strong temperature dependence of αc. (iii) Under the nonequilibrium condition, αc depends also on the density (or pressure) and the temperature of the vapor. A simple evaporation model based on a transition state theory can explain this behavior to some extent. As related topics, molecular dynamics of nucleation processes is also described.

Through the determination of Hugoniot parameters, we can get useful information about high-pressure phase transition, equations of state (EOS), etc. of solids, without pressure calibration. We have performed the Hugoniot-measurement experiments on various kinds of hard materials of chalcogenides, oxides, nitrides and borides by using a high time-resolution streak camera system (inclined-mirror method) to investigate the yielding property, phase transition and EOS. It was found that almost all brittle materials behave as an elasto-isotropic solid unlike metals (elasto-plastic solid), except TiB2. The high-pressure phase transitions were observed for ZnS, ZnSe, TiO2, ZrO2, Gd3Ga5O12, AlN and B4C. Some oxide materials showed virtually incompressible property in the high-pressure phase region. Here, the Hugoniot-compression data are reviewed, and the yield property and phase transition of these hard materials are discussed, as well as the EOS of the high-pressure phase.
