Helium is a rare gas found in limited quantities worldwide. Numerous problems will appear regarding production and distribution arising from the various circumstances confronting helium in recent years. This article analyzes the current status of helium for industrial use and based on this shows the difficulties faced by helium for use.

To date, together with rapidly developed culture-independent molecular techniques, knowledge in biomass, phylogenetic diversity and biogeography of microbial components has been extensively characterized in various terrestrial and oceanic habitats of deep biosphere. However, the general sketch of phenotypic and physiological diversity of subsurface microorganisms has remained poorly understood as most of the indigenous subsurface microbial components still escape from the laboratory cultivations. In this article, the physiological properties of the microorganisms that have been cultivated from various subsurface environments are overviewed.

Whale carcasses support unique biological assemblages in deep sea. The carcasses release reducing chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide and nourish chemosynthesis-based biological communities. Two “stepping-stone” hypotheses regarding whale-fall ecosystems have been proposed. One explains a dispersal pathway for hydrothermal vent/hydrocarbon seep faunae in the deep sea and another an evolutionary process of vent/seep specialists. Here we summarize the whale-fall ecosystems, especially in Japanese waters and our attempts to verify the hypotheses.

This paper described the cases where a high-pressure treatment of 200 MPa was found to be effective against the two typical heat-resistant spores, B. subtilis and B. cereus when conducted as a pretreatment step before heat sterilization at 90 to 100℃. In addition, when the B. cereus was used as the indicator, it took 36 minutes (D=3 min.) to complete the heat sterilization at 100℃, whereas the holding time of only 6 minutes (D=0.5 min.) was enough to achieve sterility by using the Hi-Pit (high-pressure induced transformation) effect.

High-pressure solubility of sodium chloride in water and fullerene C60 in toluene, two typical pairs of solute and solvent, was measured. Bird’s-eye views of their solubility-pressure-temperature surfaces are shown. Each view consists of two surfaces of non-solvate and solvate solutes; NaCl and NaCl • 2H2O, and C60 and C60• 2C6H5CH3, respectively. Their high-pressure phenomena are thermodynamically discussed.

Since receiving a short email reporting the superconductor reaching 200 K, we have been working on the reproducing test and the crystal structural determination of the system. We have applied our high-pressure developments for the possible experiments on metallic hydrogen to these experiments. Here we report the progress in last 3+ years including the latest results and our prospective view.

Methods to synthesize diamond under high pressure and temperature conditions are summarized, and characteristics of the synthetic diamonds are also presented. There are two ways to synthesize diamonds. One is to grow large crystals in mm size, and the other is to grow grit size up to 1 mm. Typical morphology and optical properties are demonstrated.

In this article, recent advances in the fundamental and applied researches on superconductors at high pressure were reviewed. It was described how efficiently modern observation techniques and theories were combined with high pressure to get insight into the properties of solids, liquids, and gases on the molecular level and to explore new superconducting materials.

Unpasteurized draft sake has a potential market value, since it shows fresh flavor and fruity taste, compared with conventional thermal pasteurized sake. However, the actualization of the market value of draft sake is restricted by its short shelf life due to deterioration of flavors and taste by the over-fermentation by sake-yeast, as well as by remaining enzymes produced by koji-mold. Recently, we have developed a new sake brewing process with high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treatment as a non-thermal pasteurization. Using this process, a prototype HHP-treated sparkling type draft cloudy sake, namely AWANAMA, was brewed. This prototype sake remains the sensory properties like draft sake, but avoiding deterioration by over-fermentation. In this report, we described the development of the new sake brewing process, results of marketing research by domestic and international exhibitions, and the still-remaining research objectives undergoing.

High pressure processing is an alternative technology for preservation of foods or causes detachment an adductor muscle of shellfish. This article describes the high pressure processing equipment which had been newly developed for oyster shucking and opening without heat-treatment.

The quality of cutting of diamond anvils from the stone crystal has a decisive influence on high-pressure generation using a diamond anvil cell (DAC). Recently, we have established a high-precision processing technology for the cutting. The development enabled to design a simple and convenient DAC without any adjustment mechanism to parallelize culet-faces of opposite anvils. The current situation in the manufacturing floor is also reported on.

Newly designed opposed-type anvil assemblies were developed for acquiring high signal intensity of neutron diffraction data and ruby fluorescence spectra. Ni-binded WC anvils with a wide aperture angle, which were combined with a hybrid gasket made of TiZr and Al-alloy, achieved nearly 15 GPa at room temperature. The neutron diffraction intensity was 2.5-3.0 times greater than that using the conventional toroidal anvil assemblies. The performance test of these new anvil assemblies confirms that sufficient quality diffraction data can be obtained. Using these assemblies, high-pressure behavior of hydrogen bond in Ca(OD)2 was investigated at PLANET beamline, J-PARC.

The Eulerian finite strain of an elastically isotropic body is defined by taking the state after compression as the reference state and expanding the squared length. The second-, third- and fourth-order Birch-Murnaghan equations of state are plainly derived based on the Eulerian finite strain. The key for the plain derivation is no use of differenital or tensor because of isotropic, uniform and finite change in length. For better understanding, the finite strain in the Lagrangian scheme is defined by taking the state before compression as the reference state, and the Lagrange equations of state are derived in this scheme. In this scheme, pressure increases less significantly with compression than the Eulerian scheme. The different Eulerian strains are also defined by expanding the linear and cubed lengths instead of the squared length, and the first- and third-power Eulerian equations of state are derived in these schemes. Fitting of pressure-scale-free data to these equations indicates that the Lagrangian scheme is inappropriate to describe P-V-T relations of MgO, whereas three Eulerian equations of state have equivalent significance, and the Birch-Murnaghan equations of state does not have special meaning compared to the other Eulerian equations of state.

Recently, we have succeeded to extend the attainable static pressure to 410 GPa using a diamond anvil cell (DAC). In this article, our recent advances in the ultra-high pressure generation technique of the DAC are reviewed, and the key factors for the high-pressure generation beyond 300 GPa were discussed. In addition, in such extremely high-pressures range, an optical pressure determination method and a direct observation method of the stress-state by the diamond anvil Raman spectroscopy have been presented.

Research and development of CO2 capture technologies are of great importance in the context of global warming mitigation. Among those, amines are the most widely used compounds to remove CO2 from a gas stream. In this article, amine-based CO2 capture methods are briefly reviewed with a particular focus on amine-CO2 chemistry, CO2 solubility in amine solvent, and its pressure dependence. It is also described how the molecular structure of amine affects the CO2 absorption-desorption performance by comparing several amines.

Deep-sea fish distributes to abyssal depths of several thousand meters, the pressures of which shallower-living fish cannot tolerate. Tolerance to abyssal pressures by deep-sea fish is likely to depend at least in part on adaptive modifications of proteins. However, structural modifications that allow proteins to function at high pressures have not been well understood. To elucidate the mechanisms of protein adaptation to high pressures, we cloned α-actin and myosin heavy chain cDNAs from skeletal muscles of two deep-sea fishes, Coryphaenoides yaquinae and C. armatus, and two non deep-sea fishes, C. acrolepis and C. cinereus. The comparison of the α-actins from deep-sea fishes with those of non deep-sea fishes identified three amino acid substitutions, which would make the deep-sea fish actin function even at 60 MPa. The myosin heavy chains from deep-sea fishes have a Pro residue in the loop-1 region and have a shorter loop-2 region than non deep-sea fishes. Additionally, the myosin heavy chains from deep-sea fishes have the biased amino acid substitutions at core positions in the coiled-coil structure of the rod region. The roles of these characteristic sequences in myosin heavy chain from deep-sea fish, however, have remained unclear.

Fungi are one of the most important components in ecosystems and they occupy a wide variety of environments by virtue of their highly versatile physiology function. Recently, the presence of fungi in one of the extreme environments, deep-sea, has started to be recognized. In this article, recent scientific findings through the investigation of fungal diversity in deep-sea sediments collected from several deep-sea environments, including water depths of 10,000 m and methane cold-seep sites were described. PCR-mediated analysis revealed the presence of diverse highly novel fungal phylotypes, including new taxonomic groups placed in deep branches within the phylum of Chytridiomycota with Rozella spp. as the closest related organisms, which may provide key insights into the early evolution of fungi.

In this article, recompression induced resuscitation and atmospheric pressure acclimation of deep-sea multicellular organisms were investigated. Despite captured deep-sea organisms at depths between 910 m and 1,300 m sustain serious damage on decompression and exposure to high temperature of surface seawater, the organisms recovered by immediate re-compression until 5 MPa within 30 minutes after submersible bring back to mother ship. The re-pressurized deep-sea organisms can acclimatize at atmospheric pressure condition for a few months after slow decompression at a rate of −0.025 MPa/h. Furthermore, negative potential application induced antirust effect of pressure-stat aquarium system, which composed of stainless steel, was also described.

In this article, recent advances in the experimental searching are reviewed. To date, there have been several tens of theoretical papers that predict the superconductivity of hydrides. On the other hand, there have been a few publications about experimental observations of the superconductivity despite the huge efforts in exploration. In this review, we introduce the ideas on how to approach to high critical temperature by hydrides, and the current achievements by experiments are summarized.
