Here we show that petroleum can be formed efficiently at normal temperatures and pressures from carbon dioxide and activated water. The oxygen nano-bubble containing water was treated with TiO2 catalysis under UV irradiation. The activated water was mixed vigorously with kerosene or light oil and carbon dioxide to form an emulsion. The emulsion gradually separated into a two-phase solution. After phase separation, the volume of kerosene or light oil, depending on which oil was utilized, increased by 5 to 10 %.

We describe the finding that green tea and catechins individually dissolve single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). UV–visible–near-IR absorption, photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy were used to characterize the solubilized aqueous nanotube solutions.

A facile chromatographic method for purification of pinacol boronic esters has been developed. Impregnation of silica gel with boric acid was effective both for thin layer chromatography (TLC) and for flash column chromatography. Purification of a series of pinacol boronic esters was successful by suppressing loss of the compounds due to over-adsorption.

A convenient protection-free synthetic route toward alkyl glycosides has been developed. The alcoholysis of one-step preparable glycosyl donors, 4,6-dibenzyloxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl (DBT) glycosides, under hydrogenolytic conditions gave the corresponding glycosides in good yields without adding any acid promoters. The method could be successfully applied to the glycosylation of an acid-labile oligosaccharide.

We evaluated the softness of various silicone elastomers installed on a tactile evaluation system. The softness of the elastomers was reflected by the vertical force when subjects pushed the elastomers with their fingers. The moving behavior depended on the elastic properties of the contacted objects; namely, a pushing pattern and a sliding pattern were observed for the soft and hard elastomers, respectively.

We report the first example of a µ-η1:η1-N2 dinuclear RuII complex with a polyamine ligand and elucidate the structure by means of X-ray analysis. The N≡N stretching vibration has been observed at 1994 cm−1 by Raman spectroscopy, which is the lowest value of all the known N2-coordinated RuII complexes. This low value strongly suggests the N≡N bond is primed for activation.

A novel dinuclear iron(II) complex [{Fe(py3COH)(NCS)(μ-NCS)}2](PrOH)2 was prepared. Each Fe ion is coordinated with three N atoms from tridentate tris(2-pyridyl)methanol (py3COH) and two N and one S atoms from NCS− coligand. It showed a one-step gradual spin-crossover at T1/2 = 207 K. This compound is the first spin-crossover material having an FeN5S coordination structure.

It has been established that a cationic rhodium(I)/H8-BINAP complex catalyzes the [2+2+2] cycloaddition of cyclohexadiene-linked 1,7-diynes with monoynes to produce functionalized benzobarrelenes. Functionalized azabenzobarrelenes were also obtained by using BINAP as a ligand and nitriles as coupling partners.

In order to understand the binding nature of the glycosylamines possessing imine functionality, a novel tetranuclear Ni(II) complex of N-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-4,6-O-ethylidene-β-D-glucopyranosylamine having twisted Ni4O4 cubane core was synthesized and structurally characterized.

Three oligo[(1,2-propanediamine)-alt-(oxalic acid)] thin films were prepared on SiO2, R-plane sapphire, and MgO(100) substrates, and their proton conductivities were investigated. Conductivity depended on the substrate and varied from 4 × 10−3 to 1 × 10−4 S cm−1 under the same conditions (80% relative humidity and 298 K). The thin films between the R-plane (1102) sapphire and MgO(100) substrates showed different molecular oriented structures. The thin film on the sapphire substrate, which shows higher proton conductivity, has a structure oriented parallel to the substrate. The molecular orientation in the thin film could be correlated with the proton-transport properties.

Manganese oxide nanoparticles can be obtained simply by mixing surfactant/water/oil ternary systems containing dialkyldimethylammonium chloride, manganese(II) nitrate hexahydrate, and n-hexane. This finding is valuable in the design of a one-pot synthesis of nanoparticles from microemulsion systems.

The improved Scholl reaction allows for the direct cyclization of anthracene oligomers to give bisanthene, teranthene, and quarteranthene. Furthermore, a variety of π-expanded bisanthenes are obtained by the Diels–Alder cycloaddition of bisanthene with several arynes. These reactions would allow us to synthesize various size- and shape-controlled polyperiacenes.

The friction behaviors of water and aqueous solutions of thickener were evaluated between a contact probe with a striped rough surface and a substrate. When the probe surface is flat, the contact states are the boundary lubrication and fluid film lubrication states for water and the thickener aqueous solutions, respectively. In contrast, for the contact probe with a striped rough surface, friction occurred under fluid lubrication state for both water and thickener solutions. These results indicate that the liquid in the depression on the striped rough surfaces changes the regime of friction.

A Poisson–Boltzmann continuum solvation model coupled with ab initio quantum calculation was developed for 1-octanol. It was applied to the calculation of the solvation free energies of various solutes consisting of C, H, and O in 1-octanol and their 1-octanol/water partition coefficients.

The distribution of surface tension on the front and rear sides of a camphor boat continuously moving on an aqueous-phase camphor solution was observed by the time-resolved quasi-elastic laser scattering method. The uniform motion of the boat was induced by a difference in the surface tension between the front and rear sides. A surface-tension gradient developed along the rear side, resulting in Marangoni convection that decelerated the boat.

In an attempt to develop a totally synthetic, self-regulated insulin delivery system to treat diabetes, N-substituted poly(acrylamide) copolymer gels bearing boronate functionality have been chemically optimized so as to undergo an abrupt and glucose-dependent change in hydration. This study highlights an importance of fine-tuning the mesh size of the gel relative to that of insulin in order to achieve the better controlled-release in a manner less sensitive to the temperature, even with an apparently marginal change of hydration.

We have investigated the spreading process of oil-in-water emulsions containing oleic acid droplets on flat and rough fractal agar gel surfaces. Significant spreading inhibition owing to local condensation of oil droplets is observed on flat agar gel surfaces. On the other hand, such inhibition is not observed on the fractal gel surfaces for any of the emulsions. The rough structure of the gel surfaces is an important factor of spreading dynamics of emulsions on surfaces.
