Recent developments in aryne chemistry are reviewed with a particular focus on synthetic methods. This includes an overview of the precursors of arynes and their activators; the generation of arynes with functional groups and their ensuing reactivities; and the novel transformations achieved via aryne intermediates. These newly developed methods have enabled the synthesis of a variety of previously inaccessible aromatic compounds, allowing the construction of a diversity-enriched chemical library that will further facilitate future drug discoveries.

The detection properties of alkanes by proton-transfer-reaction plus switchable reagent ion mass spectrometry (PTR + SRI-MS) were investigated. Alkanes (RH) were commonly detected as R+ by PTR + SRI-MS using NO+ as the reagent ion, and detection sensitivities were comparable to those of aromatics observed by H3O+ ionization. It can be concluded that sensitive online measurement of multiple alkanes is possible by PTR + SRI-MS using NO+ as the reagent ion.

A nickel supported on active carbon catalyst was found to exhibit an excellent activity for transfer hydrocracking of diphenylpropane with tetralin at 400 °C. It is demonstrated that the catalytic transfer hydrogenation is effected by the reverse spillover of hydrogen atom over the active carbon.

5-Pyrimidyl alkanol with an enantiomeric excess of up to >99.5% was formed using chiral crystals of achiral tris(2-hydroxyethyl) 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate as a chiral initiator. In the enantioselective addition of diisopropylzinc to pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde, the helicity of the molecular arrangement of achiral tricarboxylate in the crystalline state could be successfully used as a source of chirality to afford enantioenriched alkanol in conjunction with asymmetric autocatalysis with amplification of enantiomeric excess.

Alkynylation of chlorosilanes with copper(I) alkynides takes place smoothly in the presence of triphenylphosphine, N, N, N′, N′-tetramethylethylenediamine, or zinc powder to give a variety of alkynylsilanes in good yields.

We evaluated the frictional force between two finger models that mimic properties of fingertips. Friction dynamics were drastically changed with the presence of fingerprints and variations in sliding speed and vertical force. For example, a periodic variation of the frictional force was observed under slow sliding conditions between finger models with fingerprint-like rough surfaces.

We developed a friction evaluation system with a human finger model. The surface of the model was covered with imitation fingerprints. When a polypropylene surface was rubbed against the finger model, the friction profile varied with the sliding velocity and vertical force.

A theoretical study on a tripodal alkoxydipshophine ligand (POP), which accelerates the nickel-catalyzed monosubstitution of a polyfluoroarene with an organozinc reagent, revealed that the alkoxy group and the diphosphine act independently to facilitate cooperation of a Lewis acid and a transition metal.

Chiral bis(1,10-phenanthroline) with Tröger’s base skeleton (1) was synthesized from 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline with formaldehyde and HCl. Racemic 1 could interact with DNA from CD spectroscopy and could cleave DNA when it was complexed with copper(I).

We observed the drying process of Pickering emulsions with a microscope. In the case of water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions stabilized by common surfactants, the emulsion droplets shrunk while maintaining their spherical shapes. On the other hand, in the case of w/o emulsions stabilized by solid particles, wrinkles occurred and expanded on the droplet surfaces. The colorant dissolved in the water phase remained in a wide area after drying.

We found self-motion and accelerated dissolution of a fatty acid particle at the oil–water interface. The dissolution time at the interface was 15–20 times shorter than that in the oil phase. The driving force of the self-motion and the accelerated dissolution is the Marangoni flow induced by the spatial heterogeneity of a fatty acid layer at the oil–water interface.

An isotope of element 104, rutherfordium (261Rf), produced in the 248Cm(18O, 5n)261Rf reaction was successfully extracted to a chemistry laboratory using a gas-jet transport system coupled to the RIKEN gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS. The present system is a promising interface to explore new frontiers in superheavy element chemistry.

Electrophilic substitution reactions of sumanene were studied. Mono-, di-, and trisubstituted sumanenes were selectively prepared with the separation of all regioisomers. The regioselectivity was predicted well by the HOMO density values determined by DFT calculations.

A method of synthesizing 2-iminoindolines using samarium diiodide (SmI2) is reported. In the presence of tert-butyl alcohol, treatment of carbodiimides bearing α,β-unsaturated carbonyl moieties with a stoichiometric amount of SmI2 afforded 2-iminoindolines in moderate to high yields. The products were isolated after Boc protection of the amidine moieties. This reaction proved to be applicable to lactams and acyclic/cyclic esters as substrates.

A fluorescent host molecule bearing a bicyclic triarylphosphate framework was synthesized. Its inclusion behavior to C60 was revealed by fluorescent titration. Cocrystallization of the host and C60 resulted in the formation of an inclusion complex in the crystalline state.

Optically active secondary alkyl halides and sulfonates were treated with alkaline hydrothermal water at 250 °C in sealed vessel. The hydrolysis mostly proceeded with inversion of stereochemistry.

<p>The stickiness of acacia gum was used to assist in the ball milling of graphite in aqueous media. Graphite is successfully exfoliated through a "sticky tape" mechanism, to give a 2.06 mg mL<sup>−1</sup> aqueous dispersion of graphene. PEG<sub>6000</sub> doped with 0.4 wt% of as-prepared graphene nanosheets (GN) exhibited obviously growing enthalpies and increasing thermal conductivity by 260% over pure PEG<sub>6000</sub>.</p>

<p>Supported nickel CHA-type zeolites with different framework compositions including borosilicate, gallosilicate and aluminosilicate were synthesized. The effect of heteroatoms in the framework on the state of the Ni species introduced was investigated. The size and dispersibility of the Ni species differed greatly depending on the heteroatom in the zeolite framework, and the use of the aluminosilicate-type framework led to the formation of a highly dispersed and nano-sized Ni species. Thus, prepared Supported Ni CHA-type aluminosilicate exhibited the highest catalytic performance in oxidative conversion of CH<sub>4</sub>.</p>

The synthesis of bis[(3a,4,5,6,6a-η)-1,3,4,5,6-pentamethylcyclopenta[d]imidazo-2-thionoyl]iron(II) is reported. Structural determination of the unusual hetero-substituted metallocene by X-ray crystallographic analysis is described. Preliminary electrochemical studies reveal that oxidation and reduction potentials for the subject ferrocene lie midway between those of ferrocene and decamethylferrocene.
