Silica-supported tripod triarylphosphines that have a Ph3P-type core tripodally immobilized on silica surface enabled Pd-catalyzed borylation of chloroarenes with bis(pinacolato)diboron under mild conditions. The immobilization in tripod was crucial for the excellent performance of the Ph3P-based ligands.

Dinuclear Co and Fe complexes with a double-decker structure supported by macrocyclic ligands having two bis(imino)pyridine and xanthene groups were synthesized. The dinuclear Fe complex catalyzes ethylene oligomerization in the presence of MMAO or Me3Al to give oligoethylene with ethyl and/or propyl branches due to cooperative interaction of two Fe centers.

An air-stable emissive di(1-naphthyl)disilene protected by the bulky Eind groups (Eind = 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octaethyl-s-hydrindacen-4-yl) has been obtained by the reduction of the corresponding dibromosilane (Eind)(1-Naph)SiBr2 with lithium naphthalenide. The X-ray crystallography shows a highly coplanar (E)-1,2-di(1-naphthyl)disilene skeleton, favorable for the efficient π-conjugation involving the Si=Si unit, together with a distinct CH/π interaction between the peri-H atom of the 1-naphthyl groups and the aromatic ring of the perpendicularly-oriented Eind groups.

The first titanium(IV) complexes with cyclic tetrasiloxide ligands, [Ti(L1H)(OSiMe3)]2(H2O) (1) and (CpTiCl)4(L2)2 (2), were synthesized using the all-cis isomer of cyclotetrasiloxanetetraols R4(SiO)4(OH)4 (L1H4: R = Ph, L2H4: R = iPr) as ligand precursors. X-ray analysis revealed that 1 is a dinuclear complex with bridging siloxy and aqua ligands while 2 has a tetranuclear cage structure capped by two L2 ligands.

Novel one-pot synthesis of 2,3-benzodiazepines from aryne precursors was accomplished. Tofisopam, well-known anxiolytics, could be synthesized via C–C bond insertion of 4,5-dimethoxybenzyne with 2-ethyl-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)butane-1,3-dione, followed by the reaction with hydrazine hydrate in a one-pot operation. This protocol is applicable to the synthesis of other biologically active 2,3-benzodiazepines, such as Girisopam and Nerisopam.

Hydrolysis of trialkoxysilanes having various substituents gave cyclic tetrasiloxanetetraols with all-cis isomer as the major fraction in the presence of equimolar amounts of water and sodium hydroxide. All stereoisomers of phenyl derivative were produced by isomerization of the all-cis isomer in the presence of hydrochloric acid, and isolated and identified.

Silylation of aryl bromides with disilanes of type [{2-(PGOCH2)C6H4}Me2Si]2 (PG: protecting group) successfully takes place in the presence of a Pd/Ruphos or Davephos/CuI catalytic system to give HOMSi reagents containing various functional groups in good yields. BisHOMSi reagents also were prepared directly from the corresponding arylene dibromides.

A fully screen-printed electrode chip was fabricated for glucose detection. The utility of the screen-printed electrode chip based on a Japanese paper was demonstrated through the determination of glucose using the reaction of glucose oxidase with tetrathiafulvalene. The calibration curve showed good linearity in the concentration range 10 to 100 mM, with a slope of 0.055 μA mM−1. The paper-based electrode chip is potentially applicable for point-of-care monitoring because it is easy to use, inexpensive, and readily disposable.

We successfully powderized keratin fibers under mild conditions. Wool keratin was hydrolyzed in a binary system, consisting of a higher alcohol phase and an alkali aqueous solution phase.

Upon oxidation of the title heterocycles with dimethylamino groups, elemental sulfur is extruded to form dicationic dyes, which regenerate the heterocycles by the reaction with Na2S. The electrolysis of the heterocycles induces a drastic change in UV–vis spectrum exhibiting several isosbestic points. The bay-region substituents enhance configurational stability, so the optically pure heterocycle can be obtained in terms of helicity of one-handedness, and its chromism is accompanied by a large chiroptical response as detected by CD spectroscopy.

Octafluorobiphenyl-2,2′-diylbis(diarylmethylium) dye 2a2+ prepared from 1,2-dibromotetrafluorobenzene is interconvertible with colorless dihydrophenanthrene donor 1a. By the SNAr reactions of 1a with acetylides, π-extended analogues 1b and 1c were obtained. Their electrochromic behavior is accompanied by a drastic absorption change not only in the visible but also UV region, because the torsion angle of the biaryl unit is modified upon redox reactions.

Electrochemical oxidation of silver shells on gold nanorods was examined using in situ spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The oxidation, in a phosphate buffer solution, was suppressed because of the formation of Ag3PO4. In contrast, oxidation in a KCl solution occurred at the corners of the nanorods and proceeded until giving gold nanorods without silver shells. After the 10-s electrolysis, nanoparticles with different shapes were found on the electrode. The inhomogeneous oxidation was due to rapid oxidation of the silver shells and occasional contact of the nanorods with the electrode surfaces.

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) was coated on gold nanorods (NRs) without forming aggregates. The PNIPAM-coated NRs (PNIPAM-NRs) formed aggregates at higher temperature than the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the PNIPAM layers. The aggregation showed reversible spectroscopic responses under repeated temperature cycles. When near infrared (near-IR) light irradiated a PNIPAM-NR solution, the temperature raise up, and formed aggregates that showed broad and weak surface plasmon bands. The spectroscopic responses in near-IR region work as a negative feedback for heating a photoirradiated nanorod solution. The feedback offers spontaneous temperature control of the photoirradiated solution at LCST of PNIPAM.

The novel silica nanotubes with flower-like morphology and hexagonal outer surface morphology were fabricated via a simple ZnS nanowires templates-assisted CVD method. The as-synthesized nanotubes exhibited strong visible photoluminescence at 615 nm and indicated that the method was useful to produce silica nanotubes.

Thiophene based block copolymers are synthesized by addition of bromothiophene and Knochel-Hauser base (TMPMgCl·LiCl). Nickel-catalyzed deprotonative C–H coupling polycondensation of 3-substituted-thiophenes proceeds to give head-to-tail-type poly(3-substituted thiophen-2,5-diyl) bearing nickel at the polymer end. Block copolymers of thiophene derivatives are obtained by successive addition of 2-bromo-3-alkylthiophene and magnesium amide to a living polythiophene end. The use of nickel catalyst bearing an o-tolyl group gives the tolyl-group-terminated thiophene diblock copolymers in highly efficiently. Triblock copolymer is also synthesized by the iterative addition of bromothiophene and TMPMgCl·LiCl.

We have investigated the spreading process of oil-in-water emulsions containing oleic acid droplets on flat and rough fractal agar gel surfaces. Significant spreading inhibition owing to local condensation of oil droplets is observed on flat agar gel surfaces. On the other hand, such inhibition is not observed on the fractal gel surfaces for any of the emulsions. The rough structure of the gel surfaces is an important factor of spreading dynamics of emulsions on surfaces.

Arynes, generated in situ from o-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates by treatment with a fluoride, have been shown to react efficiently with various alkoxyphosphines via a mechanism similar to the Michaelis–Arbuzov reaction. Diverse aromatic oxophosphorus compounds, including derivatives with an ortho-ester function, have become easily available from a common aryne precursor by this method.

Dibenzo[b,g]-fused and dithieno[b,g]-fused BODIPY derivatives were synthesized, and the electronic impacts of the introducing dibenzo- and dithieno-fused structures at both of the b and g bonds in the BODIPY skeleton were investigated. Electrochemical and photophysical measurements demonstrated that these structural modifications effectively enhance the electron accepting ability of the BODIPY skeleton leading to the red-shifted absorption.
