The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of UECHI-RYU karate respiration method (URM) on physical performance. The subjects are 3 male who have practiced UECHI-RYU karate. They represent low-skilled (sub A_), middle-skilled (sub B) and high-skilled (sub C). In order to investigate effects of URM, heart rates (HR) during kata performance are measured for all subjects. In addition, electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration (RESP)and electromyogram (EMG) are measured on sub C. The results suggest the following. (1) The mean HR of Sub C during karate kata performance with URM is significantly higher than those without it (P<0.001 ). (2) When the subjects perform kata practicing URM, the peak values of % HR reserve of Sub A, B and C are about 80%, 70% and 60%, o respectively. (3) When the subjects perform kata without practicing URM, the peak values of %HR reserve of Sub A, B and C are about 80%, 60-70% and 30-40% respectively. (4) EMG activities while kata performance are significantly stronger when practicing URM.
