Sphecotypus taprobanicus Simon 1897 is redescribed on the basis of the holotype female. Although the specimen is at a subadult stage, the shape of the carapace distinguishes S. taprobanicus from other Asian Sphecotypus species.

Three new species of Pseudopoda, P. tatsumii n. sp. (♂♀), P. kenmun n. sp. (♂♀), and P. tokunoshimana n. sp. (♂♀), are described from Amami-oshima Is. and Tokunoshima Is., Japan, and a synopsis of Japanese species of the genus is provided. Four of the Japanese species cannot be distinguished based solely on general appearance, although can be separated by male palpal morphology, particularly the embolus. The epigynes are somewhat variable and insufficiently distinct to enable reliable species discrimination. The three species on Amami-oshima Island are parapatric, with unexpectedly narrow distribution ranges.

ゴミグモ属のクモ類は日本から15種が記録されていたが, 筆者は, 日本各地から得られた多数の標本を検討した結果, 22種の生息を確認した. 従来, 日本でシマゴミグモと呼ばれ, C. insulana (COSTA, 1834) に同定されてきたものには, 2種が混同されていたことが判明した. この2種をヨーロッパ産の C. insulana の標本と照合した結果, いずれも別種であった. 一方, 原記載以来採集記録がなかった C. confusa BÖSENBERG et STRAND, 1906のタイプ標本を検討した結果, いままでシマゴミグモとされてきた2種のうち1種はこれに同定できた. もう1種は新種として記載した. また, ハマゴミグモについては, 従来, C. camelodes (THORELL, 1878) に同定されてきたが, タイプ標本との照合により, 別種であることが判明し, 新種として記載した. さらに, C. atrata BÖSENBERG et STRAND, 1906カラスゴミグモ, C. argenteoalba BÖSENBERG et STRAND, 1906ギンメッキゴミグモ, C. ginnaga YAGINUMA, 1959ギンナガゴミグモのそれぞれに混同されていたと思われる近似の別種など8種を新種として記載した. 一方, S. SAITO (1939) によって青森県から記録された C. conica (PALLAS, 1772) コゴミグモについては, S. SAITO (1939) が同定した標本の保管場所が不明で検討できないことと, 今回検討した多くの標本の中にそれと同定できるものが全く見いだせなかったことから, 本論では扱わなかった.本論で扱った22種の種名は次のとおりである. Distributional data for the millipedes occurring in the Ryukyu Archipelago and adjacent islets (Senkaku and Daito Groups) are summarized based on an extensive literature survey. There are at least 58 species and one subspecies of millipedes known from the Ryukyu Archipelago (50 of these are native and 8 introduced), 5 species in the Senkaku Group, and 7 species in the Daito Group. Of these, the greatest diversity of indigenous millipede species (32 species) occurs in Okinawa-jima Island. Our results contribute to the knowledge of the millipede fauna in the region beyond the limited account presented in the previous reviews. The results also suggest that large portions of the Ryukyu Archipelago have been poorly sampled, and that further collections would considerably improve the present inventory.

A new jumping spider species, Chinattus prabodhi sp. nov. is described based on female specimens collected from Assam State of India. Females of the new species can be distinguished from other known congeners by the epigyne lacking a distinctive circular median pocket, the long, narrow and arching copulatory ducts, aligned posteriorly at the copulatory openings, and the oblong spermathecae. With the discovery of the new species, the genus Chinattus Logunov 1999 is reported for the first time from India.

Predatory behavior in Cnodalia harpax is described herein for the first time. Females of the species hanging on two threads span between branches at night were observed in the field. One of them was feeding on a sciarid fly. Observations in the laboratory revealed that C. harpax used its long claws to capture prey by hooking the legs, wings, and body. The impalement of prey by claws, previously described in tetragnathid spiders with long claws, had not been observed in C. harpax.

1. Biology of an eriophyid mite Eriophyes kuko KISHIDA, a parasite of Lycium chinense MILLER, was studied both in field and in laboratory in 1967 and 1968. The female was redescribed. The male is unknown. 2. Female mites passed through the following stages in their development: egg, protonymph, nymphochrysalis, deutonymph, teleiochrysalis, and adult. The time required for mites to develop from egg to adult was 7. 5 days on an average in June. 3. It was observed that the galls were significantly densely distributed along the veins of leaves. This seems to suggest a close relationship between the mite and the leaf sap. 4. The immature adult mites which emerged from the galls of a grown-up leaf crawled on it or were carried by the wind to arrive at the stem, and they climbed the stem to the top. There they found young leaves and fixed their bodies along the leaf veins. Next, they began to sip the leaf sap and then penetrated into the leaf tissue through the sipping pores. The leaf epidermal area infected with each mite gradually swelled up to a gall. Thus the animals grew up into adults within the gall and laid their eggs there.

キンヨウグモの網には二つのタイプがみられた. ひとつは普通の水平円網で, これはおもに初期の幼体が作っていた. 他のひとつはタテ糸だけからできた特殊な網で, これはおもに後期の幼体と成体が作っていた. 餌の捕獲行動についても調べたが, 餌は双翅類とクモ類であり, それらが網に接近したりその上を歩いてくるといきなり「ひっつかんで」捕らえていた.

After examining many specimens identified as Cyrtarachne inaequalis Thorell 1895 from various localities in Japan, females from Okinawajima Is. were found to be morphologically distinguishable from those from the Mainland and to be the independent species, while unidentified male specimens from Okinawajima Is. were found. A comparison of mt-DNA COI gene sequencing data revealed that the males and females from Okinawajima Is. belonged to the same species. The female specimens from the Mainland and Okinawajima Is. were compared with syntypes of C. inaequalis, but neither of the two species could be identified using this approach. Consequently, it was concluded that both of these species are new to science. They are described under the names C. akirai n. sp. (from the Mainland) and C. jucunda n. sp. (from Okinawajima Is.).

A new gnaphosid genus of the subfamily Zelotinae is described under the name of Aponetius n. gen. The new genus is related to Zelotes in having an intercalary sclerite in the male palp, but is distinguished from the latter by the male palp with an embolar radix reduced, a long embolus arising ventrally and a curved ridge on the retrolateral side of the cymbium, and the female genitalia with internal ducts complexly winding. Three species previously assigned to Zelotes are transferred to the new genus: Aponetius gladius (Kamura 1999) n. comb., A. ryukyuensis (Kamura 1999) n. comb. and A. flexuosus (Kamura 1999) n. comb. Two new species belonging to this new genus are described under the names of A. ogatai n. sp. and A. watarii n. sp. from Amami-Ōshima Island, Southwest Japan.

In this paper are given the descriptions of two new species of the genus Pardosa C. KOCH found in Japan. These species resemble each other morphologically and ecologically, inhabiting riversides and seashores.

This paper reviews inter- and intraspecific competition in web-building spiders in the field. Although interspecific competition was thought to be important in spider communities, recent field experiments have revealed that it is infrequent. Intraspecific competition is also not common at the population level. Possible reasons for the absence of competition in spider populations are discussed.

Spiders are nearly omnipresent in tropical regions, throughout a vast range of habitats, where they act as top predators of other invertebrates. On islands, spiders may assume the role of larger mainland predators in regulating invertebrate populations. This study documents a novel predator-prey interaction between the wandering spider Ancylometes bogotensis and the land crab Gecarcinus quadratus on Coiba Island Panama Pacific. We briefly discuss the ecological implications of this predator-prey relationship and the potential influence of marine subsidies on the island’s terrestrial ecosystem.

A new synonymy of coelotine spider is proposed through a comparison of the morphological characteristics and the results of our molecular analysis. Coelotes hachijoensis Ono 2008, described on the basis of specimens from Hachijo Island, is a junior synonym of Coelotes oshimaensis Shimojana 2000. The original distribution of C. oshimaensis is considered to be on Amami-oshima Island and the Tokara Islands in southwestern Japan, far from Hachijo Island. Various circumstantial evidences suggested that C. oshimaensis on Hachijo Island may have been artificially introduced from Amami-oshima Island.

Spiders of the genus Cybaeus are diverse in Japan and exhibit extensive morphological variation of their genitalia among species. Among Japanese Cybaeus, several species possess an elongated embolus in males and elongated spermathecae in females. Here, we describe Cybaeus iharai sp. nov. from Nagano Prefecture, central Honshu, Japan, which possesses a short embolus in males and short copulatory ducts in females. In addition, DNA sequences of the new species were obtained for future phylogenetic analyses.

チビコケカニムシの, 成体雄を除く後胚子発生の各段階の外部形態を, 特に毛序式に注目して記載した。後胚子発生過程に見られる chelal trichobothria の数の変化から, チビコケカニムシは, 他の種では成体の重要な特徴となる12本の chelal trichobothria を持ったステージが欠落した, 幼形成熟による種であると結論した。

A total of 58 spider species is reported from material mainly collected on three recent expeditions to Laos. Out of these, five species are described as new: Psechridae — Psechrus khammouan sp. nov. (male, female), Psechrus luangprabang spec. nov. (male, female), Liocranidae — Sesieutes thakek spec. nov. (male), Zodariidae — Storenomorpha anne spec. nov. (male, female), Sparassidae — Pseudopoda houaphan spec. nov. (female). The males of Caerostris sumatrana Strand, 1915 (Laos; first record for Asia) and Eurychoera quadrimaculata Thorell, 1897 (Singapore) are described for the first time. Copulatory organs of the latter species are illustrated for both sexes to facilitate identification of Eurychoera banna Zhang, Zhu & Song, 2004. New records of species formerly known from Laos are listed: Heteropoda dagmarae Jäger & Vedel, 2005, H. maxima Jäger, 2001, H. tetrica Thorell, 1897, H. venatoria (Linnaeus, 1767), Rhitymna verruca (Wang, 1991), R. plana Jäger, 2003.

Taxonomic accounts of two species belonging to the subfamily Coelotinae from Japan are reviewed. Iwogumoa portus Nishikawa 2009 originally described from Osaka, Japan and Coelotes plancyi Simon 1880 described from Beijing, China are considered to be conspecific. Therefore the former is synonymized with the latter, and C. plancyi is transferred to the genus Iwogumoa Kishida 1955. Coelotes inabaensis Arita 1974 described from Tottori, Japan is placed under the genus Dichodactylus Okumura 2017.
