The effects of Cu-containing pigments on degradation of Japanese paper have been investigated. A hand-coloured wood-block print of the late Edo era is used as a naturally aged specimen. To clarify the degradation mechanism, sheets of modern Japanese paper painted with powdered malachite are aged in an environment of 353.15 K(80°C), 65%RH. Pigments are examined with XRD. Degradation of the paper is examined with a three-dimensional fluorescence spectrometer. Cu content in the specimen is measured by ICP-AES and EDS. The Cu concentrations of the cross-sections of naturally aged specimen decrease with increasing depth. In addition, the Cu concentrations at the same depth of the artificially aged paper increase with aging. These results show that the Cu species diffuse from the right to the wrong side of the paper. Although the green pigment of wood-block print contains Cu species and As species, only the Cu species has been detected in the fiber of the degraded part of the paper. The degree of degradation of the accelerated sample painted with malachite becomes higher than that of the unpainted sample. Therefore Cu is the main species that participates in the degradation of paper. The fluorescence intensity of the papers painted with malachite decreased with increasing aging time. This result shows that diffused Cu ions make impurity levels in the band gap of cellulose.

Software engineering organizations now tend to improve their processes according to such standards as CMM (Capability Maturity Model), a process evaluation model, in addition to improving their software products. This is because it is believed that mature engineering processes can bring high-quality products within the original schedule. It is reported, however, that the result of the improvement activities is strongly related with engineer satisfaction for the process, that is, effective improvement can be expected on the phases where engineers have not been satisfied with. This paper proposes a method to evaluate how much engineers feel the current engineering process needs to be improved, with Descriptive AHP (Descriptive Analytic Hierarchy Process), one of decision making tools. Our method, based on the idea that the necessity evaluation can be related with engineers satisfaction, evaluates four engineering phases under six criteria defined at CMM Level 2, determining which phases should be improved first. As a result of having system engineers use this method, we found that quality assurance activities in the manufacturing and examination phases need to be superior for improvement to other phases.

カブトミジンコDaphnia galeata Snxsは形態の変異が大きく,古くから多くの変種(variety)が記載されるなど,分類学的に混乱した状態にあったが,最近ヨーロッパにおいて,近縁のウスカワハリナガミジンコDaphnia hyalina LEYDIGと区別されるはっきりとした種であることが明らかにされた。しかしわが国では,ハリナガミジンコD.longispina O.F.MULLERまたはD.hyalinaのシノニムか亜種としてあつかわれてきており,D.galeataの分類上の位置が確定されないできた。特にD.hyalinaとは明瞭に区別されていない。本報では,D.galeataとD.hyalinaの両種が分布する湖とされてきた琵琶湖と木崎湖のDaphniaを調べたところ,出現した種はどちらもD.galeataだけであることが明らかとなった。どちらの湖とも出現したD.galeataには大きな形態の変異があり,変異は二つの湖で異なっているが,この二つの湖の標本にもとづき単為生殖雌と雄の形態の記載と若干の考察を行った。

In recent years the globalization of foods has advanced by progress of the media. A model for foods and health, which is called by Western countries the ‘Mediterranean style’ has been reported, and is also of interest in Japan. Most studies, however, have not focused relationship between the dietary habits of Greece and Greek annual events. Therefore we examined Easter of Greek Orthodox (Πáσχα), and the Greek food-culture, which is concerned with customs or events in a city and local provinces.  As a result, the following was clear—in the city it seemed that the following of such customs faded through the people' s senses of value being diversified by change in their life style, while people living far from their home return and celebrate Easter, and offered barbecue and a variety ram meats, and followed the old customs in the provinces.  Dietary habits are influenced by the climate and religion of each race. All the same, it was found that there were common points between the events of the Greek Orthodox Easter that was based on old agriculture rites and important Japanese events, such as Shogatsu or Bon.

Seismic intensity data, which measure the degree of ground shaking, contain information on attenuation along the path from the source to the station and earthquake source strength. With some reasonable assumptions about the seismic intensity data, a properly formulated damped least squares estimation procedure can be used to determine simultaneously both three-dimensional attenuation structure and source strength. By means of this method, sufficiently distributed earthquakes with a large amount of seismic intensity data may provide information on the crust and upper mantle Q structure in a region where a spatial variation of attenuation is large enough to affect the distribution of seismic intensity. To check the validity of the method, numerical experiments were undertaken for artificial data including errors comparable to those expected from using seismic intensity. The results obtained for a two-dimensional island arc structure model show the method to be practical. The reliability of the obtained solution for Q structure can be measured by the corresponding diagonal element of the resolution matrix. By using a large number of seismic intensity data up to about one thousand and selecting solutions with high resolution, a Q structure with an accuracy of 1.5×10-3 in 1/Q and a source strength with an accuracy of 0.1 in magnitude scale can be obtained. This method is extendable to many regions including island arcs and continents because large amounts of intensity data are easily attainable.
