The objective of this study is to develop a new comprehension on the composition of the street space in Japan. To clarify the diversity of streets image spread around the railway station, this study took "Shinjuku" district as one of the typical city central. To describe and quantify the image of streetscape, a method named "component element graphics" was adopted. By analyzing various types of streetscape, typology of streets' image were classified and the exsistence of distinctive space in city central was pointed out.

This paper aims to clarify the diversity of open courtyards in faubourg Saint-Antoine area in Paris, by focusing on spatial composition and by analyzing the exterior space arrangement and the connection with the street and with the buildings. Firstly, the arrangement patterns are shown by analyzing the arrangement of the compositional units articulated by their surrounding buildings. Secondly, the connection patterns are described by analyzing the distributive role of the courtyard and the form of its connection with the street. Finally, by considering both of these patterns, 10 types of spatial compositions appear which show the diversity of the open courtyards. Then, comparing these types reveals their structural characteristics.

After World War II ended, the Case Study House Program founded by Arts & Architecture editor John Entenza in Southern California gained widespread attention through its architects' thoughtful and innovative consideration of ways to solve the severe housing shortage. This study examines these architects' conceptions of the ideal house by comparing their design theories and building compositions of these houses suggested in the Case Study House Program. While these architects were brought together through the common goal to design the ideal house, their actual designs varied considerably. Therefore, this study compares the architects' individual ideologies as expressed in their designs to examine the multifaceted aspects of this program.

The objective of this paper is to clarify the hierarchical spatial composition of dead end streets for residential environment in the old district of Macao. It has been developed into high density city where residential and commercial areas coexist. Dead end streets as buffer zone are analyzed focusing on a hierarchical spatial composition with three levels such as urban, building and individual. As the result, four types of hierarchical spatial composition into dead end streets were pointed out.
