In this paper, a new wheel mechanism for holonomic and omnidirectional mobile robots is presented. The caster drive technique is one of the feasible solutions to allow a vehicle to have holonomic and omnidirectional mobile capability with standard wheels. The caster drive is applied to a differential drive mechanism. A drive unit equips with two drive wheels driven by individual motors. The rotational stage, driven by the third motor, is mounted on the drive unit with its rotational center locating at the off centered position from the mid point of the two driving wheels. The translational position and velocity of a mobile base are controlled by the differential-drive mechanism executing a caster like behavior. The orientation of the mobile base is controlled by the rotational stage decoupled with the translational motion of the drive unit. The vehicle 3DOF are controlled by the three motors, hence the system includes no over constraint problem. In addition, the drive mechanism is very simple and could be implemented by using a traditional differential-drive mechanism.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) reduces patient quality of life, but there is little evidence of preexisting supportive care drugs. Mirogabalin is a novel drug with indications for peripheral neuropathic pain, and its mechanism of action involves strong and selective binding to the voltage-gated calcium channel α2δ subunit. We examined the effects of mirogabalin on CIPN. We followed up 21 patients with CIPN caused by taxanes or platinum-based anticancer drugs who started mirogabalin. A numerical rating scale (NRS) was used for the evaluation, and pharmacists evaluated the mirogabalin dose at its initiation by creatinine clearance in all patients, and no overdoses occurred. Mirogabalin significantly reduced NRS scores from a median of 6 to 2 (P < 0.001), and the median number of days of mirogabalin administration until determination of the best effect was 29.5 days. Furthermore, the median NRS significantly decreased by administration of mirogabalin in both the taxanes-based anticancer drug group and the platinum-based anticancer drug group. In the safety investigation, a somnolence grade of 1 or 2 was observed in 4 patients, an edema grade of 1 or 2 in 4 patients, and an edema grade of 3 was observed in 1 patient. There were no serious side effects that required hospitalization. Our study suggests mirogabalin has a palliative effect on CIPN and may be an important supportive care drug for chemotherapy. Simultaneously, it’s considered that pharmacists evaluate renal function and contribute to proper use, so that patients can expect the maximum drug efficacy after the introduction of mirogabalin.

To improve the drug information service and standardize pharmaceutical care for inpatients of the Department of Japanese Oriental Medicine, Toyama University Hospital, we created a Kampo (Oriental) medicine database and used it in the preparation of medication instruction sheets. The database was configured on a Power Mac G4 (Apple Computer, Inc.; Cupertino, CA, USA) personal computer operating on Mac OS 10.4 using FileMaker Pro 6 database software. The database comprised 5 interlinked files-patient registration file, constituent crude drug registration file, Kampo formula registration file, and a file for the making and storing of instruction sheets. Information on 239 crude drugs and 560 Kampo formulae obtained from our "Hospital Manual for Japanese Oriental Medicine" was recorded in the database. Further, color photographs of the plants from which the herbal medicines were derived and other natural medicines were included in the instruction sheets to give patients a better understanding of Kampo pharmacotherapy. The database has made it easy to prepare personalized instruction sheets, which can be done by only entering the patient's ID and the Kampo formulae prescribed or crude drug name. In addition, the medication instructions for each inpatient and the indication(s) of prescribed Kampo formulae have been recorded in the database for later use in the management of inpatient histories and to provide utilization statistics for Kampo medicines. When a questionnaire survey of inpatients of the Department of Japanese Oriental Medicine was carried out to evaluate the usefulness of the medication instruction sheets prepared using the database, it was found that they gave patients a better understanding of Kampo pharmacotherapy and made them more interested in it. In conclusion, our database system will help improve the drug information service and quality of pharmaceutical care for inpatients treated with Kampo formulae prepared from crude drugs.

In 1613 Tokugawa Ieyasu had Konchiin Suden draft the Decree Banishing Christians. This decree, which stated that Christianity was to be prohibited because Japan is the land of buddhas and kami, has long been quoted by historians as evidence of the existence in that period of the view of Japan as a "divine land". Particularly, in recent years this decree has been cited as an expression of the ideology of the Tokugawa state promulgated domestically and abroad by Ieyasu himself. However, when examined more closely the text of the decree is not at all easy to understand. Some scholars, in fact, have described it as "gibberish," or "having no coherent logic to it". Though the individual words of the text may be clear, they seem to make little sense when put together into sentences. Especially the initial section, in which the author seemingly argues that Japan is the land of buddhas as well as kami, is incomprehensible without knowledge of the Shinto-Buddhist literature of the preceding period. By examining the language of the decree in the light of medieval Shinto writings, the present article demonstrates that it was written according to the theory of "kami as essence, buddha as trace" held by the Yoshida school. This theory is famous in the history of Shinto as the doctrine that the "three teachings [Confucianism, Buddhism and Shinto] are the branches, leaves, flowers, fruits and the root". This article further discusses the shinto view of Japan expressed in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's 1591 letter to the viceroy of Goa, and shows that it, too, was based on the ideas of Yoshida Shinto. According to the belief of the Yoshida school, Mahavairocana (Dainichi Nyorai) appeared at the time of the origin of the universe and the creation of the Japanese islands as described in the Nihonshoki. The tenno was thus held to be the descendent of Dainichi, who is identical to a kami. The present article argues that Hideyoshi and Ieyasu likely shared this view of the tenno.

The following process conventionally has been followed to develop quantitative images of cerebral blood flow: (1) mean cerebral blood flow (mCBF) is calculated by the Patlak plot method; (2) a SPECT slice that includes the basal ganglia is selected; and (3) based on the value of mCBF calculated by the Patlak plot method, the SPECT slice is corrected by the Lassen method and developed into a SPECT image of quantitative regional cerebral blood flow. However, this process is complicated, and the values of rCBF have been reported to fluctuate because selection of the SPECT slice and the ROI setting are in the hands of the operator. We have developed new software that automates this analysis. This software enables automatic processing simply by inputting the value of mCBF in the normal hemisphere. Since there is no need for manual operations such as setting the ROI, reproducibility is improved as well. Regional cerebral blood flow as determined by this software is quite similar to that calculated by the conventional method, so the existing clinical evaluation does not need to be changed. This software is considered to be useful.

研究代表者らが開発した制御型直流アーク放電法を用いて厚さ300-400.ug/cm^2のHBC-フォイルを作成し東工大の3.2MeVのDCネオンビーム、KEKの650KeVのDC負水素イオンビーム、それに米国ロスアラモス研究所の800MeVのパルス負水素イオンビームを用いて照射性能試験を行った。結果はいずれの場合でも1800K-2300Kの高温環境下に加熱されたHBC-フォイルは市販のフォイルの250倍、ナノダイヤモンドフォイルの100倍以上の寿命を示した。
