We perform a nonperturbative determination of the O(a)-improvement coefficient cSW for the Wilson quark action in three-flavor QCD with the plaquette gauge action. Numerical simulations are carried out in a range of beta=12.0–5.2 on a single lattice size of 83×16 employing the Schrödinger functional setup of lattice QCD. As our main result, we obtain an interpolation formula for cSW and the critical hopping parameter Kc as a function of the bare coupling. This enables us to remove the O(a) scaling violation from physical observables in future numerical simulation in the wide range of beta. Our analysis with a perturbatively modified improvement condition for cSW suggests that finite volume effects in cSW are not large on the 83×16 lattice. We investigate Nf dependence of cSW by additional simulations for Nf=4, 2, and 0 at beta=9.6. As a preparatory step for this study, we also determine cSW in two-flavor QCD at beta=5.2. At this beta, several groups have carried out large-scale calculations of the hadron spectrum, while no systematic determination of cSW has been performed.

We present a lattice QCD calculation of phase shift including the chiral and continuum extrapolations in two-flavor QCD. The calculation is carried out for I=2 S-wave pipi scattering. The phase shift is evaluated for two momentum systems, the center of mass and laboratory systems, by using the finite-volume method proposed by Lüscher in the center of mass system and its extension to general systems by Rummukainen and Gottlieb. The measurements are made at three different bare couplings beta=1.80, 1.95 and 2.10 using a renormalization group improved gauge and a tadpole improved clover fermion action, and employing a set of configurations generated for hadron spectroscopy in our previous work. The illustrative values we obtain for the phase shift in the continuum limit are delta(deg.)=-3.50(64), -9.5(30) and -16.9(64) for sqrt(s)(GeV)=0.4, 0.6 and 0.8, which are consistent with experiments.

We study the scaling behavior of the step scaling function for SU(3) gauge theory, employing the renormalization-group improved Iwasaki gauge action and the perturbatively improved Lüscher-Weisz gauge action. We confirm that the step scaling functions from the improved gauge actions agree with that previously obtained from the plaquette action within errors in the continuum limit at both weak and strong coupling regions. We also investigate how different choices of boundary counterterms for the improved gauge actions affect the scaling behavior. In the extrapolation to the continuum limit, we observe that the cutoff dependence becomes moderate for the Iwasaki action, if a perturbative reduction of scaling violations is applied to the simulation results. We also measure the low energy scale ratio with the Iwasaki action and confirm its universality.

We present our results of lattice calculations of B parameters, which parametrize ΔB=2 transition amplitudes together with the leptonic decay constant. Calculations are made in the quenched approximation at β=5.7, 5.9, 6.0 and 6.1, using NRQCD action for heavy quarks and the O(a)-improved Wilson action for light quarks. The operators are perturbatively renormalized including the correction of O(αs/(aM)m) (m>~0). We examine the scaling behavior of B parameters, and discuss the systematic uncertainties based on the results with several different truncations of higher order terms in 1/M and αs expansions. We find BBd(mb)=0.84(3)(5), BBs/BBd=1.020(21)(-16+15)(-0+5) and BSs(mb)=0.85(1)(5)(-0+1) in the quenched approximation. The errors represent statistical and systematic errors as well as the uncertainty in the determination of strange quark mass.

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the scattering phase shift for the I=2 S-wave two-pion system using the finite size method proposed by Lüscher. We work in the quenched approximation employing the standard plaquette action at β=5.9 for gluons and the Wilson fermion action for quarks. The phase shift is extracted from the energy eigenvalues of the two-pion system, which are obtained by a diagonalization of the pion four-point function evaluated for a set of relative spatial momenta. In order to change the momentum of the two-pion system, calculations are carried out on 243×60, 323×60, and 483×60 lattices. The phase shift is successfully calculated over the momentum range 0<p2<0.3 GeV2.

The calculation of the I=2 pion scattering length in quenched lattice QCD is reexamined. The calculation is carried out with the Wilson fermion action employing Lüscher’s finite size scaling method at β=5.9, 6.1, and 6.3 corresponding to the range of lattice spacing a≃0.12-0.07 fm. We obtain in the continuum limit a0/mπ=-2.09(35) 1/GeV2, which is consistent with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory a0/mπ=-2.265(51)1/GeV2.

We present a polynomial hybrid Monte Carlo (PHMC) algorithm for lattice QCD with odd numbers of flavors of O(a)-improved Wilson quark action. The algorithm makes use of the non-Hermitian Chebyshev polynomial to approximate the inverse square root of the fermion matrix required for an odd number of flavors. The systematic error from the polynomial approximation is removed by a noisy Metropolis test for which a new method is developed. Investigating the property of our PHMC algorithm in the Nf=2 QCD case, we find that it is as efficient as the conventional HMC algorithm for a moderately large lattice size (163×48) with intermediate quark masses (mPS/mV∼0.7–0.8). We test our odd-flavor algorithm through extensive simulations of two-flavor QCD treated as an Nf=1+1 system, and comparing the results with those of the established algorithms for Nf=2 QCD. These tests establish that our PHMC algorithm works on a moderately large lattice size with intermediate quark masses (163×48,mPS/mV∼0.7–0.8). Finally we experiment with the (2+1)-flavor QCD simulation on small lattices (43×8 and 83×16), and confirm the agreement of our results with those obtained with the R algorithm and extrapolated to a zero molecular dynamics step size.

We present a detailed study of the charmonium spectrum using anisotropic lattice QCD. We first derive a tree-level improved clover quark action on the anisotropic lattice for arbitrary quark mass by matching the Hamiltonian on the lattice and in the continuum. The heavy quark mass dependence of the improvement coefficients, i.e., the ratio of the hopping parameters ζ=Kt/Ks and the clover coefficients cs,t, is examined at the tree level, and effects of the choice of the spatial Wilson parameter rs are discussed. We then compute the charmonium spectrum in the quenched approximation employing ξ=as/at=3 anisotropic lattices. Simulations are made with the standard anisotropic gauge action and the anisotropic clover quark action with rs=1 at four lattice spacings in the range as=0.07–0.2 fm. The clover coefficients cs,t are estimated from tree-level tadpole improvement. On the other hand, for the ratio of the hopping parameters ζ, we adopt both the tree-level tadpole-improved value and a non-perturbative one. The latter employs the condition that the speed of light calculated from the meson energy-momentum relation be unity. We calculate the spectrum of S and P states and their excitations using both the pole and kinetic masses. We find that the combination of the pole mass and the tadpole-improved value of ζ to yield the smoothest approach to the continuum limit, which we then adopt for the continuum extrapolation of the spectrum. The results largely depend on the scale input even in the continuum limit, showing a quenching effect. When the lattice spacing is determined from the 1P-1S splitting, the deviation from the experimental value is estimated to be ∼30% for the S-state hyperfine splitting and ∼20% for the P-state fine structure. Our results are consistent with previous results at ξ=2 obtained by Chen when the lattice spacing is determined from the Sommer scale r0. We also address the problem with the hyperfine splitting that different choices of the clover coefficients lead to disagreeing results in the continuum limit. Making a leading order analysis based on potential models we show that a large hyperfine splitting ∼95 MeV obtained by Klassen with a different choice of the clover coefficients is likely an overestimate.

We present a lattice NRQCD study of the B meson decay constant in the quenched approximation with emphasis given to the scaling behavior. The NRQCD action and the heavy-light axial vector current we use include all terms of order 1/M and the perturbative O(αsa) and O(αs/M) corrections. Using simulations at three values of couplings β=5.7, 5.9, and 6.1 on lattices of sizes 123×32, 163×48, and 243×64, we find a significant a dependence disappears in fB if the O(αsa) correction is included in the axial vector current. We observe that β=5.9-6.1 is the window where systematic errors are expected to be minimum within one-loop improved theory. Our final results are fB=170(5)(15) MeV, fBs=191(4)(17)(-0+4) MeV, and fBs/fB=1.12(2)(1)(-0+3), where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty of the strange quark mass, while quenching errors are not included.

We calculate one-loop renormalization factors of bilinear quark operators for the gluon action includingsix-link loops and an O(a)-improved quark action in the limit of a massless quark. We find that finite parts ofthe one-loop coefficients of renormalization factors diminish monotonically as either of the coefficients c1 orc21c3 of the six-link terms is decreased below zero. Detailed numerical results are given, for general valuesof the clover coefficient, for the tree-level improved gluon action in the Symanzik approach (c1521/12,c25c350) and for the choices suggested by Wilson (c1520.252,c250,c3520.17) and by Iwasaki (c1520.331,c25c350 and c1520.27,c21c3520.04) from renormalization-group analyses. Compared with thecase of the standard plaquette gluon action, the finite parts of the one-loop coefficients are reduced by 10–20 %for the Symanzik action, and approximately by a factor of 2 for the renormalization-group improved gluonactions.

We present an unquenched lattice calculation for the B0-B̅ 0 transition amplitude. The calculation, carried out at an inverse lattice spacing 1/a=2.22(4)  GeV, incorporates two flavors of dynamical quarks described by the O(a)-improved Wilson fermion action and heavy quarks described by nonrelativistic QCD. Particular attention is paid to the uncertainty that arises from the chiral extrapolation, especially the effect of pion loops, for light quarks, which we find could be sizable for the leptonic decay constant, whereas it is small for the B parameters. We obtain fBd=191(10)(-22+12)   MeV, fBs/fBd=1.13(3)(-2+13), BBd(mb)=0.836(27)(-62+56), BBs/BBd=1.017(16)(-17+56), and ξ=1.14(3)(-2+13), where the first error is statistical, and the second is systematic, including uncertainties due to chiral extrapolation, finite lattice spacing, heavy quark expansion, and perturbative operator matching.

The authors demonstrated a new method for inducing enormous shrinkage in single-walled carbon nanotube bundles by applying low energy electron beam irradiation along with supersonic vibration, and a maximum shrinkage rate of −100% cm2/C was obtained under electron acceleration of 1 keV. The characteristic feature of the shrunken single-walled carbon nanotubes was a wavy deformation that affected the entire bundle. The authors believe that a uniaxial stress induced by the supersonic vibration broke the equilibrium of the internal stress and allowed the uniform accumulation of defects under low energy electron beam excitation. The wavy deformation of the single-walled carbon nanotubes resulted in the enormous shrinkage of the bundle.

We study the structural, electronic, magnetic, optical, and magneto-optical properties of NpN in detail using the fully relativistic full-potential calculations based on the density functional theory within the local spin density approximation. We successfully reproduce the positive sign of the electric field gradient (EFG) at Np nuclei. The positive EFG is in striking contrast to the negative EFG in a Np3+ free ion, indicating the importance of the interplay between spin–orbit coupling and covalent bonding in NpN. Also, the calculated band structure shows large splittings induced by spin polarization and spin–orbit coupling, suggesting that both effects are indispensable for understanding the electronic properties of this material. This results in a large Kerr rotation angle of about 2°, which is comparable to those of uranium calcogenides.

We study the magneto-optical Kerr effect using fully relativistic calculations. Spin–orbit coupling is dealt with exactly solving the Dirac equation directly and the matrix elements of the Dirac matrices α are used in a fully relativistic expression of the Kubo formula for the optical conductivity derived with a relativistic sum rule. We also perform approximate calculations of the optical conductivity to examine the accuracy of a partly relativistic expression in which the matrix elements of the momentum operator p are used instead. As an example, we carry out calculations for bcc Fe and fcc Ni using the fully relativistic full-potential linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals method. It is found that the partly relativistic treatment is good for the diagonal optical conductivity while it is not very good for the off-diagonal optical conductivity, the Kerr rotation angle, and the Kerr ellipticity. The results of the present study are compared to those of experimental and other theoretical studies.

Dissociation of charmonia in hot QCD is studied on a quenched anisotropic lattice using standard plaquette gauge action and O(a) improved Wilson fermion action. Simulations are carried out at temperatures in the range 0.88 TC to 2.3 TC. We calculate effective masses and Bethe–Salpeter wavefunctions for the ground state (1S, 1P) and some excited states (2S, 2P) with variational analysis. To distinguish between bound states and scattering states, we apply two methods: first, we compare effective masses for charmonium correlation functions under different spatial boundary conditions. Because the scattering states are sensitive to the boundary conditions, finite volume effects are expected when a charmonium dissociates. Second, we study if the wavefunctions show a sign of scattering states which will be characterized by a broad wavefunction. We find no clear evidence of dissociation for the charmonium states up to 2.3 TC so far.

The behavior of longitudinal acoustic (LA) and transverse acoustic (TA) phonons in a cubic relaxor PbMg1/3Ta2/3O3 (PMT) ferroelectric has been investigated by Brillouin light scattering. Analysis of the temperature dependences of phonon velocity in the temperature range from 50 to 870 K has revealed anomalies in the vicinity of the Burns temperature (TB≈570 K) for LA phonons and a wide frequency-dependent minimum of the velocities of LA and TA phonons in the same temperature region as the dielectric response anomaly. Using experimental data, temperature dependences of the C11 and C44 elastic constants have been calculated. The elastic constants have been found to be frequency-independent in the gigahertz range. The results obtained are discussed in the framework of modern ideas on the crystalline lattice dynamics of relaxor ferroelectrics.

Background: In Japan, as the number of elderly covered by the Long-term Care Insurance (LTCI) system hasincreased, demand for long-term care services has increased substantially and consequently growing expendituresare threatening the sustainability of the system. Understanding the predictive factors associated with long-termcare expenditures among the elderly would be useful in developing future strategies to ensure the sustainability ofthe system. We report a set of predictors of the highest long-term care expenditures in a cohort of elderly personswho received consecutive long-term care services during a year in a Japanese city.Methods: Data were obtained from databases of the LTC insurer of City A in Japan. Binary logistic regression wasused to examine the predictors of the highest long-term care expenditures. We used a simplified model thatfocused on the effects of disability status and type of services used, while controlling for several relevant factors.Goodness of fit, a multicollinearity test, and logistic regression diagnostics were carried out for the final model.Results: The study cohort consisted of 862 current users of LTCI system in city A. After controlling for gender andincome, age, increased utilization rate of benefits, decline in functional status, higher care needs level andinstitutional care were found to be associated with the highest LTCI expenditures. An increased utilization rate ofbenefits (OR = 24.2) was a strong main effect predictors of the high LTC expenditures. However, a significantinteraction between institutional care and high care need level was found, providing evidence of the combinedeffect of the two covariates.Conclusions: Beyond to confirm that disability status of elderly persons is the main factor driving the demand ofLTC services and consequently the expenditures, we showed that changes in utilization rate of benefits -a specificinsurance factor- and the use of institutional care conditional on the high care level, were strongest predictors ofthe highest LTC expenditures. These findings could become crucial for tracking policies aimed at ensuring financialsustainability of LTCI from a public insurer perspective in Japan.

The beneficial effects of dietary selenium (Se) supplementation for poultry and the distribution of Se in tissues have been well documented, but the functionalities of the Se-enriched products are much less concerned. Alcohol induces liver injury by initiating oxidative stress and antioxidant therapy has been proposed as an effective way of reducing the injury. Because a correlation between Se and antioxidant capability has been established, the alleviation effect of the Se-enriched fatty goose liver (SFGL, containing 900 μg/kg Se) on alcohol-induced liver injury was studied. Mice were daily fed with 2.5, 5, and 10 g/kg·bw SFGL and common fatty goose liver (CFGL, containing 200 μg/kg Se) one hour after ethanol administration and the animals were scarified and the blood and liver were collected for analysis on day 21. Results indicated that SFGL was more effective in reducing the hepatosomatic index and the degree of steatosis than CFGL. SFGL in all the three doses normalized the lipid metabolism and the activities of ALT and AST, indicating that SFGL attenuated the alcohol-induced liver injury. SFGL decreased the serum and hepatic ADH activities and the MDA content, implying that the liver injury attenuation effect of SGFL was related to oxidative stress reduction. The measurement of antioxidant variables, including GSH-Px, GSH, and SOD, revealed that the levels of these molecules were significantly increased after SFGL ingestion, confirming that SFGL alleviated alcohol-induced liver injury by enhancing the antioxidant capability. It was concluded that Se-enriched poultry tissues are potential remediators against alcohol-induced liver injury.
