To provide anatomical data on the nutrient foramen (NF), the authors observed the number, site and its index (SI), position, diameter and penetrating direction of the nutrient canal (NC) in the femur and tibia of German shepherd dogs. The femur often had more than two NF on the caudal surface with 30.0 to 86.7% of SI. The proximal NF of the femur was regarded to be the major NF, because it was present in most dogs and had the largest diameter. The tibia always had only one NF with 23.2 to 38.3% of SI on the lateral border. Their direction of the NC followed Bérard’s rule with the exception of the proximal NF of the femur. These results describe the anatomical condition of the NF and NC in the dog.

Acoustic properties were investigated for four tungsten bronze (TB) uniaxial ferroelectric crystals, i.e., (Sr0.61Ba0.39)5Nb10O30 (SBN61), Cu-doped (K0.5Na0.5)1.0(Sr0.75Ba0.25)4.5Nb10O30 (KNSBN:Cu), K5.80Li3.82Nb10.12O30, and K4.74Li3.07Nb10.44O30 of which the spontaneous polarization is directed along the polar c axis. Large acoustic anisotropy between the two elastic constants C11 and C33 have been observed from all samples. C33 exhibits a significant softening on approaching the diffuse phase transition temperature from high-temperature side while C11 does not show any substantial change in the same temperature range. This softening is accompanied by substantial growth of hypersonic damping, appearance and growth of central peak (CP), and slowing down of the relevant dynamics of CP represented by the reducing half width. All these results indicate that the lattice motions along the c axis couple strongly to the one-component order parameter of the polar nanoregions (PNRs) or precursor polar clusters which form and grow below a certain temperature in the paraelectric phase. The inverse dielectric constant measured along the c axis of SBN61 and KNSBN:Cu can be described by two linear regions divided by a crossover temperature at which the change in the magnitude of dipole moments and the strength of the dipole couplings are expected due to the formation of PNRs. C33 of SBN61 becomes continuously softened upon cooling even when the temperature crosses the Burns temperature TB at which PNRs begin to appear. It may suggest that additional relaxation process other than that of PNRs may exist at high temperatures above TB and couple to the longitudinal acoustic waves propagating along the polar axis. Recent observation of a single-particle relaxation at high temperatures and its transformation into a collective relaxation of PNRs by dielectric spectroscopy [Belous et al., J. Appl. Phys. 102, 014111 (2007)] might be related to the anomalous acoustic behavior of SBN61 observed above TB.

We have investigated phosphorus ion (P+) implantation in Si nanocrystals (SiNCs) embedded in SiO2, in order to clarify the P donor doping effects for photoluminescence (PL) of SiNCs in wide P concentrations ranging in three orders. Some types of defects such as Pb centers were found to remain significantly at the interfaces between SiNCs and the surrounding SiO2 even by high-temperature (1000 °C) annealing of all the samples. Hydrogen atom treatment (HAT) method can efficiently passivate remaining interface defects, leading to significant increase in the intensity of PL arising from the recombination of electron-hole pairs confined in SiNCs, in addition to significant decrease in interface defects with dangling bonds detected by electron spin resonance. From both the results of the P dose dependence before and after HAT, it is found that the amount of remaining defects is higher for samples with SiNCs damaged by implantation with relatively lower P+ doses and then annealed, and that through HAT the observed PL intensity increases surely as the P concentration increases up to a critical concentration. Then it begins to decrease due to Auger nonradiative recombination above the critical concentration which depends on the size of SiNCs. These results suggest an effect of relatively low concentration of P atoms for the enhancement of PL intensity of SiNCs and we present an unconventional idea for explaining it.

Brillouin spectroscopy of Pb(Sc0.5Nb0.5)O3 single crystals reveals an order-disorder ferroelectric phase transition occurs at 110 °C upon cooling. A softening of the longitudinal acoustic (LA) mode is observed that can be attributed to the coupling between polar nanoregions and acoustic modes. A critical slowing down of the central peak, a feature of order-disorder ferroelectric phase transitions, is observed near Tc. The similarity in temperature dependences of the two kinds of relaxation times determined from the central peak and LA mode suggests that the changes in the central peak arise from local polarization fluctuations in the polar nanoregions.

Charge carrier concentration in operating field-effect transistor (FET) of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) has been directly determined by electron spin resonance (ESR). ESR signals of field-induced polarons are observed around g=2.003 under the application of negative gate-source voltage (Vgs). Upon applying drain-source voltage (Vds), ESR intensity decreases linearly in the low Vds region, reaching to about 50% of the initial intensity at the pinch-off point (Vds~=Vgs). For larger absolute values of Vds, it becomes nearly Vds independent. These behaviors are well explained by the change in the carrier concentration obtained by the FET theory using gradual channel approximation.

The dynamic polar nanoregions (PNRs) which form below the Burns temperature and determine the unique properties of relaxor ferroelectrics were predicted [Tinte et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 137601 (2006)] to be pinned to the quenched chemically ordered regions (CORs) usually observed in lead-containing relaxors. In Pb[(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.45Ti0.55]O3 crystal where CORs are known to be absent, we have found the phenomena typically related to the relaxation of dynamic PNRs, namely, the significant Brillouin quasielastic scattering, the softening of the longitudinal acoustic mode, and the deviation from the Curie-Weiss law above the Curie point. This implies that PNRs may appear in crystals without CORs.

We have developed a method for real-time monitoring of the cell responses to cytotoxicants using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with the multiple internal reflection (MIR-FTIR) geometry. To prevent cell damages induced by measurement environments, we have constructed specialized chambers, in which temperature was maintained at (37±0.5) °C and humidified air containing 5% CO2 was supplied. We monitored cell death induced by cytotoxic surfactant Tween20 using MIR-FTIR spectroscopy. It was found that cell death can be monitored by the absorption intensity of amide II band. This result suggests that our method has a potential to be applied for real-time cytotoxicity assay.

High-resolution Brillouin scattering experiments have been performed to investigate the low temperature "aging" effect in lanthanum lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) relaxor ferroelectric ceramics. From the temperature dependence of the frequency shift of longitudinal acoustic mode, an acoustic anomaly was observed at T0~46 K in these ceramics with clear "aging" effect below T0. The results have been discussed in the light of stepwise freezing of the related degrees of freedom causing transition from proper to improper dipole glassy states at T0.

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate the polarized structure functions in strongly coupled Script N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory deformed in the infrared. We find that the flavor singlet contribution to the g1 structure function is vanishingly small, while the flavor non-singlet contribution shows the Regge behavior at small–x with an intercept slightly less than 1. We explicitly check that the latter satisfies the moment sum rule. We discuss the `spin crisis' problem and suggest that at strong coupling the spin of a hadron entirely comes from the orbital angular momentum.

In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of trehalose coating and the optimal dose of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), an osteoinductive protein, loaded onto tailor-made bone implants for implant-induced bone formation in vivo. We fabricated tailor-made α-tricalcium phosphate bone implants (11 mm diameter with 2 parallel cylindrical holes). bFGF 0, 1, 10, 100 or 200 μg/implant was incorporated into implants with and without a trehalose coating, and these were subsequently implanted into dogs to correct temporal bone defects of the same size and shape. Four weeks after implantation, we analyzed the bone implants and surrounding tissues by using micro-computed tomography imaging and histological analyses, as well as gross evaluation. No significant difference in new bone formation was observed between implants with and without trehalose coating at any of the bFGF doses. Bone implants with 100 and 200 μg bFGF showed significantly more new bone formation at the implant site and within the cylindrical holes of the implants than those without bFGF (P<0.05). However, heterotopic bone formation on the skull near the implant was observed in the group that received 200 μg bFGF. These results suggest that 100 μg bFGF is the optimal dose for this implant in dogs, and that the trehalose coating may not be necessary in vivo, probably due to the presence of blood proteins and electrolytes at the implant site.

We studied the high-harmonic generation of H2+ ions in an intense laser field by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in prolate spheroidal coordinates. By analyzing the power spectra of the harmonics with the electric field polarized along the molecular axis, we found that the yield of the third-order harmonic drops by several orders of magnitude at a specified aligned angle between the laser polarization direction and the molecular axis. The laser polarization angle of the minimum depends on the internuclear distance and it disappears both in the separated- and united-atom limits. This infers that the minimum is associated with the molecular symmetry. By decomposing individual contributions of the σ and π states, we identified that the minimum is attributed to the cancellation of the induced dipole moments of the σ and π states, like a dynamical Cooper minimum, but the position of the minimum can be tuned by the laser intensity for a given internuclear distance.

An excitonic Floquet state in semiconductor superlattices (SLs) driven by an intense monochromatic laser is examined based on multichannel scattering theory, where this state is supported by a photon sideband attributed to a SL joint miniband. It is shown that the excitonic Fano resonance (FR) is caused by the coupling between photon sidebands, and thus one obtains the possibility of dynamic quantum control of this exciton state by means of laser tuning. This FR differs from the conventional FR observed in the original SLs without laser irradiation in that the latter FR results from the static Coulomb coupling between different SL joint minibands. Both the q parameter and the spectral width Γ associated with the excitonic FR of concern vary notably with a change of laser strength. Heparan sulfate endosulfatases Sulf1 and Sulf2 hydrolyze 6-O-sulfate in heparan sulfate, thereby regulating cellular signaling. Previous studies have revealed that Sulfs act predominantly on UA2S-GlcNS6S disaccharides and weakly on UA-GlcNS6S disaccharides. However, the specificity of Sulfs and their role in sulfation patterning of heparan sulfate in vivo remained unknown. Here, we performed disaccharide analysis of heparan sulfate in Sulf1 and Sulf2 knock-out mice. Significant increases in ΔUA2S-GlcNS6S were observed in the brain, small intestine, lung, spleen, testis, and skeletal muscle of adult Sulf1−/− mice and in the brain, liver, kidney, spleen, and testis of adult Sulf2−/− mice. In addition, increases in ΔUA-GlcNS6S were seen in the Sulf1−/− lung and small intestine. In contrast, the disaccharide compositions of chondroitin sulfate were not primarily altered, indicating specificity of Sulfs for heparan sulfate. For Sulf1, but not for Sulf2, mRNA expression levels in eight organs of wild-type mice were highly correlated with increases in ΔUA2S-GlcNS6S in the corresponding organs of knock-out mice. Moreover, overall changes in heparan sulfate compositions were greater in Sulf1−/− mice than in Sulf2−/− mice despite lower levels of Sulf1 mRNA expression, suggesting predominant roles of Sulf1 in heparan sulfate desulfation and distinct regulation of Sulf activities in vivo. Sulf1 and Sulf2 mRNAs were differentially expressed in restricted types of cells in organs, and consequently, the sulfation patterns of heparan sulfate were locally and distinctly altered in Sulf1 and Sulf2 knock-out mice. These findings indicate that Sulf1 and Sulf2 differentially contribute to the generation of organ-specific sulfation patterns of heparan sulfate.

Since Aristotle, people have believed that metaphors and similes express the same type of figurative meaning, despite the fact that they are expressed with different sentence patterns. In contrast, recent psycholinguistic models have suggested that metaphors and similes may promote different comprehension processes. In this study, we investigated the neural substrates involved in the comprehension of metaphor and simile using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to evaluate whether simile comprehension differs from metaphor comprehension or not. In the metaphor and simile sentence conditions, higher activation was seen in the left inferior frontal gyrus. This result suggests that the activation in both metaphor and simile conditions indicates similar patterns in the left frontal region. The results also suggest that similes elicit higher levels of activation in the medial frontal region which might be related to inference processes, whereas metaphors elicit more right-sided prefrontal activation which might be related to figurative language comprehension.
