We describe a new species of the rare and deep-sea family Myxasteridae from Japanese waters. This is the first record of this family in the western North Pacific. The new species, Asthenactis agni n. sp., differs from all congeners in having seven arms with an R/r ratio of 7.2, primary radial plates with convex distal edges, and two to three actinolateral spines that are up to 4.7 mm long.

The psychology of motivation is a broad and loosely defined field. Furthermore, motivation is a basic psychological process. Few would deny that it is the most important focus of the micro organizational behavior. Traditionally, psychologists have not totally agreed on how to classify the various human motives, but they acknowledge that some motives are unlearned physiologically based. For that reason, it is difficult to comprehend a framework of motive concepts which can predict human behavior. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to review the motive concept suggested by McClelland(1987), who is most closely associated with the study of achievement motive. Specifically, first we summarized up the measurement and concepts of motive, such as "measures of human motive dispositions", "achievement motive", "power needs", "affiliative motive" and "avoidance motive". In addition, we critically reviewed and discussed them in terms of the definitions of concepts. In conclusion, although we could grasp the implications of each motive concept, there were some ambiguities regarding McClelland's motive concepts. Thus, more elaborate conceptual regulation and detailed explanation of the connections to the concepts seem necessary in order to clarify the notion of motive concepts, because there are a number of motives which lie in a gray area from the viewpoint of human motivation described by McClelland.

Transitioning from intravenous to oral antibiotic therapy for Escherichia coli bacteremia could reduce the length of hospital stay and drug costs without compromising efficacy. Despite the expansion of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli, limited data are available regarding the effectiveness of switching to oral antibiotic therapy in patients with bacteremia caused by this organism. To compare clinical outcomes between oral transition therapy and intravenous therapy in patients with bacteremia due to ESBL-producing E. coli with a urinary source, we conducted a retrospective cohort study at 3 Japanese hospitals. The effects were estimated by Cox hazard analysis using propensity scores. Among 996 patients with bacteremia due to E. coli, 73 were included in the study. In the adjusted analysis weighted by propensity scores including 26 patients in the oral switch group and 47 in the intravenous group, oral transition did not increase the risk of treatment failure within 60 days (adjusted hazard ratio 0.86, 95% confidence interval 0.18–4.10), whereas the length of hospital stay was shorter in the oral switch group than in the intravenous group (median, 12 days vs. 19 days, P = 0.04). Intravenous-to-oral transition may be an effective treatment option that shortens the hospital stay.

We study nn random symmetric matrices whose entries above the diagonal are iid random variables each of which takes 1 with probability p and 0 with probability 1-p, for a given density parameter p=α/n for sufficiently large α. For a given such matrix A, we consider a matrix A ' that is obtained by removing some rows and corresponding columns with too many value 1 entries. Then for this A', we show that the largest eigenvalue is asymptotically close to α+1 and its eigenvector is almost parallel to all one vector (1,...,1).
