When observing an object through fog, its visibility is reduced by the scattering of the light emitted or reflected from the object. Our efforts have been rendered towards observing the physical characteristics when we view a light source or object through fog.<BR>In this paper, the practical comparison of some light sources such as a fluorescent lamp, a sodium lamp or a mercury lamp about visual conditions is made at night in fog on an experimental basis. The effects of color improved mercury lantern and sodium lantern, which are used practically in highway lighting are compared in fog, and visual ranges of colored objects on the road surface lighted by them are also measured.<BR>The most important result of the experiment is that the visual difference depending on various kinds of light sources can't be noticed so much as the large decrease of visibility by the fog itself.

Japan does not receive enough solar energy to grow figs. By comparing the received solar energy major fig producing areas of the world and Japan, we have derived the supplemental light energy value, which is the minimum additional light energy necessary for optimal fig maturation. By supplementing natural sunlight with this optimum value by electrical lighting, the fig season in Japan can be lengthened, crop volume increased, and fruit quality improved. The optimum period for fig maturation in Nagoya is from June to September, when the minimum temperature remains above 20℃ in Nagoya, Athens, Izmir, and San Diego. During this same period, however, Athens receives direct sunlight for approximately 1,308hours, while Nagoya gets approximately 638 hours, i.e.about 49% of Athens.These four months also provide average estimated solar energy levels of 17.5 MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> for Athens, 15.3MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> for San Diego, and 8.8MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> for Nagoya. A normal cultivation environment from January to March in winter will require additional supplemental light energy 5.1MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> which is derived from the difference in the solar energy between 8.8MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> for outdoor maturation in Nagoya and 3.7MJ・m^<-2>・day^<-1> for a green house in winter.

In recent years, windowless office spaces have increased remarkably, while problems related to windowless roomsremain to be solved.This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of visual environment on human psychology and behavior in a windowless office space.This thesis consists of three Experiments which are stated below.In Experiment 1, using scale models, at first the psychological factor structure of the visual environment of a windowless control room, which is the typical windowless office room, are surveyed. Secondly the relationship between psychological factors and physical factors which constitute visual environment are examined.In Experiment 2, how the visual environment affect subjective appraisal and human behavior such as eye movement, task performance and behavior pattern, in windowless office spaces are disscussed, when subjects were at fundamental task in an actual sized experimental space.In Experiment 3, how visual environment and types of task affect human psychology and behavior such as subjective appraisal, task performance, behavior patterns in windowless office spaces are examined, when subjects took six types of task, which were chosen to take usual work at an office space into consideration, in the same experimental space.Summing up the results obtained above, we conclude that although the visual environment of the windowless office space have negative influence upon human psychology and behavior, they can be compensated by considering interior decoration and types of task.

Migraine is an illness with a throbbing pain on one side of the head, and is usually accompanied by photophobia towards sunlight or lighting. It is reported that this photosensitivity is caused by Intrinsically Photosensitive Retinal Ganglion Cell (ipRGC). At night, it is best to avoid light at the peak wavelength of ipRGC (480nm) that may cause migraine.

We measured contrast sensitivity function in the vision of young and aged observers under combinations of four different illuminance levels (1, 10, 100, and 1000 lx) and three different color temperatures (3000, 5000, and 6700K). We found that (i) no systematic difference appeared across color temperatures, (ii) the sensitivity was relatively worse in aged observers at higher spatial frequencies when the illuminance was high and at all spatial frequencies examined when the illuminance was low, and (iii) the deterioration cannot be explained only by the equality of retinal effective illuminance. These results suggest that the contrast sensitivity function can be used as the basis of lighting design for different visual tasks.

The National Police Agency has yet to propose detailed specifications for preventing signal head phantoms; they are currently being examined by the agency. The pedestrian signal head developed by our project satisfies the standard for the luminous intensity distribution specified by the agency. With this film type of pedestrian signal head, the ratio of signal light to sun phantom was found to be three times as that of much as current pedestrian signal heads.
