This study examines the influence of electoral environments on female candidates, using the data of the 2003 prefectural legislative elections. First, electoral environments in each prefecture are compared, by using measures: number of female candidates, number of female winning candidates, proportion of female candidates, proportion of female winning candidates, successful ratio of female candidates, and successful ratio of male candidates. The results show that, in prefectures they have larger population, more women become candidates and winning candidates. However, the relation between numbers of female winning candidates and successful ratio of female candidates is not clear. Rather, there is negative relation between numbers of female candidates and successful ratio of female candidates. Second, this study examines the advantage of incumbents under the current electoral system. And the result indicates female incumbents as well as male incumbents are more elected than newcomers. However, most incumbents are male in elections. Therefore the advantage of incumbents means that the current electoral system work negatively for women who try to involve politics. Moreover, we confirm there is a big range of numbers of seats in electoral districts, that is one through eighteen. The more seats there were in an electoral district, the higher the successful ratio of female candidates became. Because the number of candidates in many electoral districts were one or two more than the number of seats, the more seats there were, the lower likely the competition became. These findings clearly seem to show influences of electoral environments on female candidates' results in prefectural legislative elections.

The nimbus of Buddhist statues is said to be an Indian version of the Iranian picturized hvarna (Glory). I try now to compare the Buddhist dharmacakra with hvarna. An Avestic scripture Zamyad Yast says that the hvarna left Yima when he began to tell lies. A Buddhist scripture Cakravarti-sthanada-suttanta says that the divine disk (dibbam dhammacakkam) left a king in a certain moment, but a new disk appeared for the next king when the latter began a righteous rule. In the domain of art, the solar-disk with wings (symbol of the Kingly Glory) depicted in the ancient relieves of the western world (Mesopotamia and Iran) reminds us of the cakra (wheel) depicted in the Buddhist sculptures as one of the seven treasures of universal king (Cakracartin). I think that the Buddhist idea of dharmacakra was influenced somehow by the Iranian idea of hvarna, and that such an influence was possible in the Mauryan period.

The Scientific Expedition to the New World conducted the stratigrafical excavations at the archaeological complex of Campamento de Paredones from July 29th to October 1st, 1996. The site lies in the hot chaupiyunga ecological zone drained by the Chancay River, one of the main tributaries of the Lambayeque drainage system, and occupies a strategic point connecting the Lambayeque coastal zone with the Cajamarca highlands to the east. We concentrated the excavations in the Sectors E (Platform E) and G (Plaza G) aiming to clarify the site formation process, and could tentatively divide the whole cultural sequence into four successive phases, all belonging to the Late Intermediate Period (A.D. 900-1476). Thy are, from the lowest upward : the Raccarumi, Paredones, Carniche and Chongoyape phases. Although the analyses of the excavated materials have not yet been completed, we can suggest the following at present. 1) The site was occupied as an independent regional administrative-ceremonial center during the whole Late Intermediate Period with some architectural modifications in each phase. 2) The last Chongoyape phase represents the Chimu conquest and its subsequent occupation, narrated in the oral tradition documented by a Spanish chronicler, Miguel Cabello de Balboa in the late 16th century. And 3) Campamento de Paredones flourished all through the Late Intermediate Period playing a pivotal role in the socio-cultural exchanges between the coastal and highland ecological zones in the northern part of the Central Andean prehistoric cultural area.

A certain On-Gana found in the ancient Japanese documents may be derived from Korean Language. In order to prove the hypothesis, I have tried to examine some Chinese characters and, as a result, I am assured that Chinese Characters, '叱' '伐' and '支' used as OnGana (seen in Nihonshoki), are derived from Korean Language. In this paper, I intend to examine the Chinese Characters, '旱' and '干' through the ancient Japanese documents, and explain the usage of them as On-Gana.

Michel Foucault strongly practiced his power criticism throughout his life and his power criticism was based on the basic concept of "Power/Knowledge" which focused on the strong and inevitable relations between power and knowledge in the diverse field of human sciences of Western civilization. However, late in life, he declared that the general theme of his research had not been power but the subject. What does this declaration mean? Did he abandon his power criticism by turning to the new ethics of the self? In this study, especially analyzing his later works, I investigated the substance of this change to reveal that Foucault never abandoned his principle of power criticism. I also took up the earlier works which treated the individual as the passive subject, and I verified that Foucault analyzed such a subject as an executor of the Will to Knowledge, and as a important component of power. So, his analysis of the subject has not been different from power criticism. Foucault's analysis of the subject fundamentally supported his critical theory of power and was consistent throughout his life.

L'Absence du fondement normatif pose les problemes les plus populaires et serieux a la pensee de Michel Foucault. Nancy Fraser, par example, accuse Foucault de n'avoir ni fondement normatif, ni solution de rechange, ni espoire pour l'avenir de notre societe. Mais Foucault a toujours critique la psychanalyse, la medecine, la raison, notre humanite, le sujet, la discipline, la politique, le pouvoir, et presque toutes les institutions. Comment il peut les critiquer ? Quelle est la base ou le criteTe de son critique, c'est-a-dire, le fondement normatif de Foucault ? Dans cette etude, j'ai essaye de trouver ce fondement en analysant l'idee de (pouvoir-savoir) de Foucault. Cette idee contient une direction critique pour accuser le savoir de violation des objets a connaitre. Autrement dit, pour le sujet du savoir, c'est la violation de l'Autre. Pour Foucaut, c'est un effet du pouvoir mauvais et negatif. fiviter la violation de l'Autre peut etre pense un imperatif negatif. Mais on peut poser cette imperatif comme le fondement normatif solide de la critique de Michel Foucault.
