To be a creative city is now one of the most popular policy goals for urban governments, although the concept is ambiguous and critics are skeptical about its ability to regenerate urban areas. This paper examines the role that this concept plays in urban governance. First, I explain the political economic process called ‘glocalization’, which has enhanced inter-urban competition since the 1970s. Then I describe how urban politics has been transformed, taking on an entrepreneurial form, and how cultural policy is used to reconstruct an urban image to attract investment and human capital. Although rebuilding a city's image is a contested process, the ambiguity of the term ‘creative city’ as a policy issue is utilized to mobilize various political and cultural actors for urban growth.

In the animation industry, a lot of creators, who have various specialties, cooperate to make up products. In particular, animators often do it although they don’t work in the same place and time. This paper addresses how they accomplish such cooperation without co-presense from the analysis of their work of drawing. The pictures which a sub-key animator drew in her labor process contain instructions for the animators in the subsequent process. These prevent them from a misunderstanding of the upper-process animators’ directions. In the same vein, she added drawing papers to make instructions without any rewards. These observations imply that animators orient to generate smooth cooperation, and we should understand the labor problems of animators from their systems of cooperation.

Do we need the concept of “power” in doing historical sociology of discourse? Three years ago, I described the formation and transformation of discursive space of sexuality, especially masturbation, in modern Japan. While some have analyzed this using the concept of “discursive power” toward children and women, I argue here that such explainations are inadequte by analyzing the transformation of discourse on female masturbation and virginity.

This article examines the relation between experts and the public on “Detergent Issue” from the perspective of the public understanding of science. It will be shown that in a dispute over the use of a synthetic detergent, there was a discrepancy between the scientific explanations offered by experts and the disquiet, concerns and experience of the public at large.

This paper aims at the analysis of de-self-labeling process in social interactional processes on the assumption that social-labeling can be transformed into self-labeling, and that it is possible for a self-labeled person to break away from the self-labeling process. Self-labeling is an interactional process that can oppress the self-identity of a labeled person, so the de-self-labeling process for him is a reconstruction process of his self-identity. This paper considers two types of de-self-labeling processes that correspond to two types of self-labeling (α/β). This paper is an attempt to extend labeling theory using the key concept of de-self-labeling.

We, as Sociologists or as Laymen, often explain human conducts using categories, as in “A does X, because A is woman”. But as Harvey Sacks showed, we have at least two (collections of) categories that can correctly be applied to any member of society. “Sex” and “Age”. So, here is one problem. How can we, especially as sociologists, justify explanations such as the example? Sacks's answer is: By analyzing the orientations that members themselves regard as relevant to their conduct. But, again, we do not usually explicitly enunciate the categories that are applied to us such as in saying “I am woman, so I do X”. Here, another problem occurs. How can we access to the orientation of members? This paper will try to answer this latter problem by analyzing data in which sex-categorization is done by members themselves without actually explicitly stating any sex/gender category.

In this paper, I re-evaluate the theoretical implications of social constructivism, which has persisted as the most influential movement in science studies for more than 30 years. Social constructivism has been perceived as being antirealist, a school of thought that denies the reality of the world. Although antirealism has been criticized by scientific realists, who believe that the sciences can define reality whereas religion and pseudo-sciences cannot, the dichotomy of realism and antirealism that philosophers of science often impose is problematic because, in a philosophical sense, social constructivism is neither realism nor antirealism. In response, in this paper I introduce the term anti-antirealism to clarify theoretical claims that the dichotomy of realism and antirealism have blurred.

This article reconsiders the sociological significance of sociologist Howard S. Becker’s liberalist stance. In 1966, Becker presented a lecture entitled “Whose side are we on?” in which he discussed his support for liberalism. However, his stance has been strongly criticized and called “underdog sociology” by Alvin Gouldner and others. Although, these criticisms have insisted that sociologists should be either neutral or a reflection of ourselves, Becker paid attention to the construction of the self as a sociologist within a social organization. Interpreting his ideas in this way provides a perspective from which we can empirically analyze political debates.

Until recently a distinction between history and historical sociology made little sense, but now, with the contemporary tendency to prefer the present reality of the past constructed from collective memories or narratives of one's experience over factual accounts verified by historical inspection, there seems to be a more notable distinction between the “sociology of history” and historical sociology.To grasp the situation with respect to sociological methods as whole, this article introduces some presentations from workshops and symposiums organized by The Kanto Sociological Society during the last two years. We argue the interaction between historical materials and the sociological imagination and the reflexivity of historiography and “lived history”.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relation between ‘Sciences of Complexity’ and ‘Social System Theory’ To date, numerous attempts have been made by sociologists to demonstrate what Parsons, T. and Luhmann, N. intended in their theory. But little attention has been given to an examination of the relation between ‘System Theory’ and their ‘Social System Theory’. Therefore I will attempt to clarify the following three issues. The first issue to be discussed is a survey of the history of System Theory, specifically, I would like to point out that Sciences of Complexity ensues from Bertalanffy's General System Theory. The second issue is to demonstrate which aspects of System Theory Parsons and Luhmann introduced into their theories. Finally, I will describe the present state of ‘Social System Theory’ and ‘Sciences of Complexity’.

In the present essay, Jürgen Habermas's early sociological works will be examined in two respects: on the one hand, their stratified relationships to the conceptual constructions of Carl Schmitt and Rüdiger Altmann; on the other, his understanding of historical development in eighteenth-century England. The analysis through these two subjects maintains that the core of his conceptualization of the civil/bourgeois public sphere consists in the articulation between institutionalized political powers (not only government, but also parliament) and private citizens who generally criticize political affairs. In addition, the essay will also argue that his diagnosis of modern society depends especially on his critical attitude of intermediary organizations which attempt to affect political processes without public control in the re-politicized social sphere that emerged after the disappearance of the liberal distinction between the public and private realm.

This paper explores the interconnection between war and tourism, focusing on the “Rest and Recuperation (R&R)” program of the U.S. Army during the Korean War (1950–1953). The R&R program was a system that provided military personnel with a five-day period of leave to Japan for every six or seven months of frontline service. First, I argue that the idea of limited wartime service originated from scientific research on war neurosis (or combat fatigue) and the U.S. Army’s recreational services called “Special Services” during the Second World War. Second, I analyze how the Japanese tourist industry and GHQ/SCAP worked together to provide recreational services for U.S. armed forces stationed in Japan and other Asian countries. Finally, I consider the possibility that the R&R program had negative effects on morale, discipline and combat efficiency.

Today kabuki is considered as highbrow. This paper clarifies how the highbrow image was constructed, and shows that the image was not created by the specialists of kabuki. Since the Meiji era, kabuki had been criticized as vulgar and non-artistic. The highbrow image has been created by non-specialists who are unaware of the modern history of kabuki as a lowbrow culture. Now kabuki's highbrow and artistic image has spread widely being propagated by non-specialists. It is said that ‘popularization of highbrow culture’ has occurred in Japan. Non-specialists who are in the majority in Japan have created the image of kabuki as highbrow culture, but they do not have a habit of seeing kabuki in their daily life. It is important for ‘popularization’ of kabuki that the authorization of kabuki rests on those who are not regular viewers of kabuki.

Yanagita Kunio clarified that the word “Senzo” (Japanese traditional concept of ancestors) is used in two different meanings in his “Senzo-noHanashi” (1946). One meaning is the founder of “Ie” (the stem family), and the other is all of its deseased members. This paper points out that his study was based on his formula on the the relations between “Ie” and society. He regarded social mobilization in modern Japan as a serious problem to the eternal continuation of “Ie” and the society which is organized by “Ie” s. This problem let him pay attention to two meanings of “Senzo”. Through the reviewal of his studies, we will try to find a possibility to build a new hypothesis about the relation between social mobilization and ancestor worship in modern Japan.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the manner in which the psychological concept of “moratorium” is used within the Japanese discourse on youth. In recent years, the general discourse in Japan on youth has been criticized for being non-empirical. However, even though this discourse is not based on empirical data, it still contains a certain authenticity and it is accepted as authentic by the general public. I present a conceptual analysis of the psychological concept of “moratorium” in order to describe the nature of this authenticity.

The accumulated corpus of studies of trust is based on the assumption that trust makes democratic and economic activities productive and efficient. This article explores the possibilities of a functional approach to trust through a reconsideration of the trust theory of Luhmann. His approach to trust is functional involving a comparison of trust itself with other functional equivalents. However, in the studies based on his trust theory, only his concept of trust is considered, while his approach itself neglected. To empirically describe social problems using his approach, it is necessary not to assume that trust is something good, to compare it with other functional equivalents, and to examine how an individual problem is constructed.

By concentrating on the process of making something by hand, this paper considers what kind of value handmade "charm-goods" had for girls in Japan's 1980s boom of "fortune-telling & charm." It has been said that "charm-goods" in the 1980s "magic-religious popular culture" gave girls their own sense of identity with a world-view that was worthy of them, but with "charm-goods" the fact that they were made by hand has been regarded as being important. This second element seems to have demanded from girls a more active commitment to "fortune-telling and charm." Through analyzing the articles of "My Birthday," which is well known as a representative "fortune-telling & charm" magazine for girls, I clarify that "charm-goods" and their being made by hand helped girls to get involved in and improve their real-life communication skills.

Fingerprinting was the first technology capable of accurately identifying individuals. In the Japanese puppet state of Manchuria, fingerprinting was implemented on a large scale. Why was fingerprinting considered so necessary in Manchuria despite the huge effort required? In addressing this question, this paper focuses on the complicated mobilities of workers in Manchuria. The Manchurian government faced a situation of highly complicated mobilities and thus it needed a means of the control of mobilities. Further, the fingerprinting registration of workers gradually developed into a national registration system, so this paper examines the process of the implementation of fingerprinting registration and the formation of a national citizenry in Manchuria based on the control of mobilities.

The aim of this paper is to consider a contrast between “mechanized ossification” and the “struggle of the gods.” In ‘The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.’ Weber was afraid that Western culture would enter a state of “mechanized ossification.” “Mechanized ossification” is a key concept in Weber's explanation of modern Western stagnation. Based on his concern regarding “mechanized ossification,” I consider Weber's writings and clarify the positive side of the “struggle of the gods,” which many have considered to be Max Weber's pessimistic diagnosis of modern culture.
