There are several things interfering with the implementation of Quality Engineering in R&D and production departments. I am in charge of promoting implementation of Quality Engineering in Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. Therefore, I have heard many criticisms about Quality Engineering by engineers and managers. I would like to talk about "things interfering with the implementation of Quality Engineering". The reason I chose it as the last theme for my series is because it is important to organize and analyze them in order to spread Quality Engineering.

In semiconductor fabrication processes, it is desirable to utilize on-line quality engineering to establish stabilized fabrication processes through optimized process control. In this study, for the purpose of establishing on-line engineering in semiconductor fabrication processes, a system that many people can utilize was studied and verified through practical use. In work analysis and loss calculations, an attempt was made to eliminate hesitation and improve working efficiency by standardizing data and creating tools that made the data more usable and more generally applicable. Through practice in actual processes and establishment of these methods, an increase in the use of on-line quality engineering was observed, and it was also shown that on-line quality engineering could uncover various problems present in process control.

Electro-polishing is a process having a merit of being able to obtain a smooth surface. In the process, it is necessary to adjust the processing conditions depending on the shape. But few reports have been published on the effects of processing conditions, which are mostly determined by experience. In this study, an electro-polishing process was optimized for austenitic stainless steel using the Quality Engineering approach. From the results it was clarified that the factors including polishing voltage, anode surface, anode surface diameter and polishing solution flaw significantly affect SN ratio and sensitivity. Under the optimum condition, it became possible to continue working without being affected by the deterioration of the polishing solution.

In Taguchi Methods, lot of emphasis is given to Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratios. S/N ratio is a very important measure to improve the functionality of a system. In this paper, the importance of S/N ratios for improving the performance of multidimensional systems is discussed. The role of S/N ratios for predicting the performance of multidimensional systems using Mahalanobis-Taguchi System (MTS) or Mahalanobis-Taguchi-Gram-Schmidt (MTGS) process is also discussed. The paper describes the different types of S/N ratios with their advantages as compared to the classical multivariate statistical methods.

In the last edition, I explained that we used the SN Ratio to show system functionabilities and dispersions of output characteristics in "Quality Engineering". ln this edition, I would like to explain how we should evaluate the functionabilities and the dispersions in various conditions. When people evaluate the characteristic dispersions, they make many samples repeatedly, and wait for random errors to occur. However, engineers who know Robust Design forcefully change the levels of noise(the causes of dispersion) and input signal to see how the output actually vary.

How to measure the S/N ratio to evaluete functionality of a chemical reaction process where we can obsearve only fraction ratios of input main material consumed or of objective material produced, quite often both. The former fraction ratio is denoted by q and the later by p. when there are many observations obtained at various times at each reaction process, the way of calculating S/N is from the following ideal relation is introduced in this article. Where T is the time at which p and q were observed. only one pair of p and q is available, the way of measuring S/N is also discussed in section 1.4 and 1.5.

In weather forcasting, a prediction using probability ratio has been widely used. After discussing the validity of the methods, how to calculate the Signal-to-Noise ratio as the measure of prediction accuracy is proposed in this article.

In the era of diversified information, the demand of electronic document processing is becoming stronger and stronger. Today, it is indispensable to use electronics for data base processing. The methods transforming printed documents into electronic codes have been commercialized, however, technologies to recognize hand writing have not been well developed yet. In this paper, the improvement of hand writing recognition, which is to recognize the pattern of multi-dimensional information, was studied using MTS (Mahalanobis-Taguchi System). It has been confirmed the application of MTS is effective for multi-dimensional information. This study aimed to apply the method to a new field of multi-dimensional information processing.

Using health forecasts made with the Mahalanobis distance from the results of health checkups over a two-year period, medical examination items were selected, an economic evaluation was carried out by a loss function, and the potential for reducing costs was verified. The functional limit △0, costA, lossA0, and distance tolerance △ were determined. As a result, from the value of Δ obtained by economic calculation of the loss function, it became evident that 1.5 was an appropriate threshold value for distinguishing healthy from unhealthy individ uals. This was also confirmed from the results of calculation of the standard S/N ratio. When threshold values were studied and examination items were selected on the basis of these results, one small enterprise was able to reduce its costs by 10 million yen, and the results suggested that healthy/unhealthy diagnoses could be made from health checkup data for two or three years without a medical examination by a doctor.

Introductory quality engineering education was studied. There has been much dispute regarding this type of education, in which the participants must struggle to make the initial paradigm shift. Quality engineering instructors have had much difficulty in motivating their students to take up quality engineering. This study identified current problems in introductory quality engineering education. In particular, instructional materials that will efficiently show the effectiveness of quality engineering and enable students to be educated effectively were studied.

An automated guided vehicle (AGV) cannot reach its desired position unless its position is detected and its movement is controlled. This study mounts two sound sources on a moving object modeled on the AGV, one on the left side and the other on the right side of the object. The positions of the sound sources are detected as they emit sounds at different frequencies. In addition, the numbers of revolutions of two wheels that are driven independently from the sound sources are controlled to guide the moving object to the desired position. This paper presents a basic test in which the hardware and software parameters of the proposed guidance system are optimized by the parameter design in quality engineering. Model-based testing as it is, it demonstrates that parameter optimization of the guidance system leads to swift and accurate guiding of the moving object to the desired position. This test result confirms the feasibility of the sound guidance system for AGVs.

In a measurement system consisting of a commercial scanner and an in-house analysis program, JIS Z 9090 (Measurement-General rules for calibration system) was applied to calculate usage uncertainty, calibration uncertainty, and standard reading uncertainty and obtain a combined standard uncertainty. On the basis of the results, the current calibration system was validated by comparing its calibration interval and adjustment limits with the optimal calibration interval and adjustment limits. In this system, a 0.2-mm thick PET sheet is used as a standard. It was found that the standard reading uncertainty was too high to be ignored. It was also found that in the measurement of diagonal lines, usage uncertainty was high enough to raise problems. The cause was found to be the large effect of the angle at which the sample was placed on the platen, which is an error factor. Countermeasures are lacking at present.

In overseas factories where labor costs are lower than in Japan, assembly work and other such production line operations rely heavily on manpower, so the quality and quantity of the products produced depend on the capabilities of the workers. To produce conforming articles speedily, workers have to be able to do repetitive work evenly on the production line. However, work abilities differ greatly from individual to individual. To hire the workers best suited for the tasks to be done and place them in the right jobs, a way of accurately testing their aptitudes, a paper-and-pencil test, for example, is necessary. In this study,to establish an effective autonomous way to find out if a person is suited for production work in advance in production sites throughout the world, we studied the use of the RT method to judge workers' working capabilities from the results of the Kraepelin general-purpose aptitude test. As a result, it was confirmed that worker capability can be determined at a level that is effective enough for practical use.

Liquid chromatographic/(LC) analysis is an effective instrument for pharmaceutical analysisand pharmaceutical science. Various methods have been utilized in attempts to optimize LC analytical conditions. ln order to obtain a high degree of separation, the optimum conditions were determined by the use of dynamic S/N ratio as an index for the evaluation of the separation process. An L18 orthogonal array was used in this experiment. lt was demonstrated that S/N ratio was an appropriate scale to indicate the separation of some peaks in a LC. Also, the appropriate types of S/N ratio to show the degree of separation in a LC was discussed.

Generally, a liquid chromatography (LC) is widely used in the field of a chemical and a pharmaceutical analysis. On account of many advances of a modern technique of the instrumental analysis and the appearance of high resolution column, a chemical analysis and a quantitative analysis are done more accurately than before. However, it seems that the determination of the analytical condition is mostly performed empirically. ln development of a new drug research, LC is an indispensable tool for the analysis of the chemical components, and so it is important to get the analytical conditions which is able to performed high degree of the separation. This paper describes that the parameter design was conductedto optimize the analytical condition of a LC. The experiments were conducted on the L₁₈ orthogonal array. Evaluation was done by the S/N ratio and sensitivity in comparison withthe current condition. The optimum condition was determined from the control factor levels which gave the large values of a S/N ratio and sensitivity S. As a result, an improvement was estimated as 3.32db in a S/N ratio. lt seems that this method can be widely applicableto the determination of the analytical conditions of a LC.

The mathematics used for Quality Enginearing is not the one based on statistical mathematics but the one called quadratic expansion.The degree of freedom is defined as the rank of adjoined matrix of each quadratic term of the expansion. The reason that the writer used the name of degree of freedom is also explaned in this article. Quadratic expansion is related with Hermitian expansion in a complex domain in mathematical form and is related with power spectral expansion from the viewpoint of communication theory.

Earthquake prediction by the MT-system was proposed by Genichi Taguchi in 1995. Studies started in the Yano laboratory at Tokyo Denki University in 2004 demonstrated that earthquake prediction was possible to some extent, but there was considerable prediction error. A new study was started in line with new developments in the MT-system. Data collection was started in Tsukuba district. This paper gives a periodic analysis of seismic waveforms in the Tsukuba district and obtains the distances of ground vibrations by using the RT method, with the variance of the period as an attribute. The possibility of prediction by a further two-tail T method is shown, based on the variation of the distance over time. The estimated S/N ratio was -0.176 db and the sensitivity was 0.016 db. The prediction error was ±10% at a vibration velocity of 20μm/s.
