This study discusses the characteristics of the Seishu Gijuku, as well as its and its impact on the overall education of the Japanese–Brazilian Nisei in the early 1930s. During this period, the headmaster of the institution, Midori Kobayashi, undertook a number of fundamental reforms, including the establishment of self-sustaining management, the reshuffling of teachers, and the separation of the school from the affiliated church organization. As part of those reforms, a student organization called Jukuseikai was established; its student members enjoyed kendo (Japanese fencing) and baseball, among other activities. Furthermore, a multilingual and multinational education was offered at a branch school in Santa Ana, allowing Seishu Gijuku's educational offering to become diversified and thus contribute overall to improvements in the education of Japanese–Brazilian Nisei children.論説(Article)
