A major feature of the self-organizing map (SOM) is a topology-preserving projection from the input layer to the competitive layer, and it has been used mainly as an analytical tool for discovering underlying rules in the given data set. Even though recent splendid progress in this area, there are few novel ideas to break such a conventional style. On the contrary, based on its distinctive nature, a new method for generating patterns through backward projection from the competitive layer to the input layer is proposed recently. Moreover, a promising technology for producing animation as a series of backward-projected patterns along with any pathways on the competitive layer is presented. Then, in order to carry out further considerations, some computer simulations with a variety of posed stick figures are tried in this paper. After training, four kinds of pathways, which correspond to different movements such as dancing, exercising and walking, are prepared. Though some of them does not contain any training samples, all of them worked well as we have intended in advance. As a result, it is found that the proposed method shows good performance and it is also confirmed its effectiveness.

This paper describes the temperature rise and the thermal stability of tank type power capacitors and a analyzing method of the stability and permissible overload factor using a computer. When capacitor is operated at high ambient temperature and under excessive high voltage, the temperature of the dielectric rises higher and in some cases the capacitor looses the thermal balance and finally breakdowns thermally.We measured the heat radiation coefficient and temperature rise of the capacitor, and clarified that the radiated heat calculated from the heat radiation coefficient and the area of the tank coincided with the generated heat calculated from the output of the capacitor and the loss factor of the dielectric. Furthermore we developed analyzing method of thermal stability and permissible overload factor of capacitors using a computer. By this analysis it becomes possible to know the permissible overload factor and the temperature of the capacitor dielectric without performing the temperature rise test which requires long time and much cost.

This paper presents a daily peak load forecasting method using an analyzable structured neural network (ASNN) in order to explain forecasting reasons. In this paper, we propose a new training method for ASNN in order to explain forecasting reason more properly than the conventional training method. ASNN consists of two types of hidden units. One type of hidden units has connecting weights between the hidden units and only one group of related input units. Another one has connecting weights between the hidden units and all input units. The former type of hidden units allows to explain forecasting reasons. The latter type of hidden units ensures the forecasting performance. The proposed training method make the former type of hidden units train only independent relations between the input factors and output, and make the latter type of hidden units train only complicated interactions between input factors. The effectiveness of the proposed neural network is shown using actual daily peak load. ASNN trained by the proposed method can explain forecasting reasons more properly than ASNN trained by the conventional method. Moreover, the proposed neural network can forecast daily peak load more accurately than conventional neural network trained by the back propagation algorithm.

In this paper, an illuminating method with the 1/f-fluctuation is proposed to produce the peaceful lighting stage, because it is said that the 1/f-fluctuation will make a relaxed mental state.The light intensity from the normal light bulb is changed by the phase control in the A. C. power source with the 1/f-fluctuation signals generated by performing the First Fourier Transformation (FFT) on the normal random numbers and by passing through the 1/f-filter. The light power spectrum is measured by calculating the picture image from the CCD camera to check the tendency of 1/f-fluctuation in the illumination from the bulb, and also in the flame light from the candle. Physiological impression for the 1/f-fluctuating illumination is compared with the change of the heart rate in other lighting conditions: the normal lighting, and the flashing lighting using the random numbers. From the result of physiological measurements, the decrease in the heart rate for the proposed 1/f-fluctuating illumination is observed.

This paper describes a method to reduce a variance of measured headway distance using stereo vision. In this method, first, headway distances are measured by both the stereo disparity and the difference of the size of a preceding vehicle on image, and then one of them which has smaller variance is chosen as the headway distance. The size of a preceding vehicle on image is measured by a new method of detecting the edges on the preceding vehicle which alleviates the bad influence of change in back ground. A headway distance measuring system using this method has been developed, showing the effectiveness on tracking a preceding vehicle within 25m headway distance.

In this study, we propose a hybrid brain/blink computer interface based on a single-channel electroencephalography (EEG) amplifier. Eyelid closing and hard blink were selected as two possible inputs for control of the interface. A 2-min calibration was required before starting to use the interface. An algorithm for feature extraction and classification was developed for EEG signals from eyelid closing, hard blink, and resting. To evaluate the performance of the interface, we incorporated it into a personal identification number (PIN) application, in both visual and auditory modes. Experiments with 5 healthy participants revealed that the PIN application based on the interface achieved a mean accuracy of 97.40%. In conclusion, we expect that our investigation will contribute to hybrid brain-computer interface research and technologies in the near future.

Here we report the development of a personal identification number (PIN) application using a P300-based brain-computer interface (BCI). We focused on visual stimulation design for increasing the evoked potential in the brain. Single-channel electroencephalography and a computationally inexpensive algorithm were used for P300 detection. Experimental results showed that our proposed stimulus induced higher P300 amplitude than did a conventional stimulus. For a performance evaluation, we compared two versions of the proposed application, which were based on our ‘original P300 BCI’ and ‘adaptive P300 BCI’. In the adaptive P300 BCI, we introduced a novel algorithm for P300 detection to improve the information transfer rate while maintaining acceptable accuracy. Experiments with 10 healthy participants revealed that the original P300 BCI achieved mean accuracy of 83.50% at 11.40 bits/min and the adaptive version achieved mean accuracy of 86.00% at 18.63 bits/min.

We have developed a rehabilitation tool used for treatment of patients suffering from hemiplegia and evaluation of the paralysis-stage. The tool consists of a PC and button switches for a computer game so that it is not expensive, available in anywhere, and possible to get a change of air in the patients. In this study, we have evaluated behavior indices such as an operation time to play with the games both in healthy young students and patients with paralysis. From experimental results, it was shown that the recorded behavioral indices showed the strong dependence on the motion control function of a subject. Preceding evaluation of effectiveness in rehabilitation of the developed tool, possible application of the tool in evaluation of the motion control function of the patients with hemiplegia was discussed in this paper.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm to estimate sleep quality based on a heart rate variability using chaos analysis. Polysomnography(PSG) is a conventional and reliable system to diagnose sleep disorder and to evaluate its severity and therapeatic effect, by estimating sleep quality based on multiple channels. However, a recording process requires a lot of time and a controlled environment for measurement and then an analyzing process of PSG data is hard work because the huge sensed data should be manually evaluated. On the other hand, it is focused that some people make a mistake or cause an accident due to lost of regular sleep and of homeostasis these days. Therefore a simple home system for checking own sleep is required and then the estimation algorithm for the system should be developed. Therefore we propose an algorithm to estimate sleep quality based only on a heart rate variability which can be measured by a simple sensor such as a pressure sensor and an infrared sensor in an uncontrolled environment, by experimentally finding the relationship between chaos indices and sleep quality. The system including the estimation algorithm can inform patterns and quality of own daily sleep to a user, and then the user can previously arranges his life schedule, pays more attention based on sleep results and consult with a doctor.

Since 1970s, linear models such as autoregressive (AR), moving average (MA), autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), etc. have been popular for time series data analyze and prediction. Meanwhile, artificial neural networks (ANNs), inspired by connectionism bio-informatics, have been showing their powerful abilities of function approximation, pattern recognition, dimensionality reduction, and so on since 1980s. Recently, deep belief nets (DBNs) which use multiple restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs) and multi-layered perceptron (MLP) are proposed as time series predictors. In this study, a hybrid prediction method using DBNs and ARIMA is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed by the experiments using CATS benchmark data and chaotic time series data.

Theoreticl study and phenomenal examination have been done for a long time, but some electric power company even today has instataneou power failure due to the galloping. Our study differs from other ones on the point that non-linear three dimentional simultaneous equations of conductor movement can be solved directly using numerical calculation. Foundamental characteristcs of galloping can be made clear by that calculation changing parameters variously. This time, we used the method that bundle conductor are changed equivalently to single conductor. We could also make it clear that instable domain becomes wider when rotational movement of conductor occurs.
