Since 1962 we have been undertaking a research project on automation of sugar refinary under the contract with the Nagoya Seito Co. Ltd. The Project included survey, analysis, development, design and experiment. The results have been fully made use of in the operation line of the new Tokyo Sugar Refinary recently built in Shinagawa Wharf, Tokyo.There are many difficult problems particular to the control of sugar refinary. As of date, however, we believe this new refinary plant is one step forward in its automation and above the most advanced world level. This new refinary adopts sequence and computer controls. A nearly complete automatic operation is possible in the production line with various batch processes including, in particular, the boiling processes. Both feedback and feedforward controls are employed. For the first time in this kind of plant, an automatic production control was made possible from an over-all point of view.

Two types of hydraulic bilateral servomechanisms, symmetrical type and force-feedback type, are proposed and constructed. Characteristics of such bilateral servomechanisms are expressed by a square matrix with four elements which are functions of s. These four elements can be experimentally determined by two series of experiments: one with free slave-end and the other with fixed slave-end. For a symmetrical type the value of the determinant of the characteristic matrix is theoretically equal to the unity and independent of s.

Artificial hands have been investigated for various aims; one such aim is to use them for industrial robots for automation of material handling and assembling.In this paper, fundamental problems lying in the industrial robot are considered, and one prototype mode ldeveloped by the author is introduced.This artificial hand has the senses of touch, force and position. The signals from these detectors are processed logically, and are used for controlling the motion of the hand. This hand can perform five fundamental operations, and if a simple program composed of a sequence of fundamental operations and of position references is given, it can carry out a sequence of various operations automatically.Such artificial hands may be useful for flexible automation. Moreover, the usefulness of such hands may be largely increased if they are incorporated with artificial eyes which can detect positions and recognize patterns.

This study deals with contouring control system of machine tools, which uses electro-hydraulic pulse motors as its main part. First, the system's features are briefly given and the algebraic arithmetic type interpolator which is used in the system is described. Secondly, an analysis of the dynamic characteristics of thh electro-hydraulic pulse motor is given. Last, the error of the system connected to the machine tool is examined showing that the machining error will be greatly reduced by a proper use of the cutter's center path offset mechanism of the system.

The Construction and the operation of a computing numerical control system including a special purpose computer are explained.The features and the merits of this system are as follows;1) No preliminary calculations concerning the cutter offset are necessary for the programming. The mumerical informations on the cutter radius are given by dial setting on the operation panel of the equipment.2) Electro-hydraulic pulse motors are employed as the servo-elements to drive the machine-tool.3) All transistorized and extremely miniaturized.

This research analyzed the relationship between headline news and bond market in Japan through text mining technology. As a result of intensive analyses, we found the significant relationship between interest rate changes and the negative (or positive) news classified by keywords. At the same time, we also found that a measure of constructing keyword list has a significant impact on performance of classification.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as a forward obstacle collision warning system (FOCWS) and a night vision enhancement system (NVES) aim to decrease driver's mental workload and enhance vehicle safety by provision of useful information to support driver's perception process and judgment process. On the other hand, the risk homeostasis theory (RHT) cautions that an enhanced safety and a reduced risk would cause a risk compensation behavior such as increasing the vehicle velocity. Therefore, the present paper performed the driving simulator experiments to discuss dependence on the NVES and emergence of the risk compensation behavior. Moreover, we verified the side-effects of spontaneous behavioral adaptation derived from the presentation of the fuel-consumption meter on the risk compensation behavior.

An initial design of an advanced control system for an industrial crystallizer train is addressed. The target process is a part of para-xylene production process, and it consists of five scraped surface crystallizers, two centrifugal separators, and two hydrocyclones. An operation policy is derived by solving a constrained nonlinear optimization problem on the basis of a nonlinear process model. Multiloop and multivariable control systems are designed to realize the derived operation policy and their performances are compared through simulation studies. The process is found to be highly interacting and constraint switching is likely to occur under operation condition changes, so that application of constrained multivariable model predictive control may be well justified. The procedures demonstrated in this study will help perform a feasible study for unconventional applications of advanced control technology.
