This essay analyzes In This Corner of The World (both the original manga and the anime version), focusing on the role of “memorizing now”. This work is very successful in depicting truly daily life in wartime Japan. The protagonist Suzu represents “memorizing now” through her act of drawing things and gives the meta-structure to the work. The little girl Harumi who tells Suzu names of warships in Kure Port that she could hardly know at that time mediates the continuity between innocent citizens and military. Absent and invisible brothers who taught her those names and also connect Suzu to her husband Shusaku function as the presentness itself of “memorizing now”. They are the limit of depicting=memorizing the past, bring about a tragic death to Haruim and deprive Suzu of her drawing right hand.

This article analyzes the Japanese electric power supply network using Ulrich Beck’s theory of ‘sub-politics’, which argues that political decisions are made by non-political and expert groups, rather than by parliamentary government. What kinds of factors were necessary for the electric power supply network to become sub-political? In order to answer this question, this article focuses on risks and benefits, the influence of several wars, technological innovation and the transition in the value of electricity, in relation to both the government and the electric industry.

This paper theoretically approaches the process of historical change in South Korea's ban on Japanese popular culture. By examining “the collective emotional ambivalence” with concepts of “censorship,” “collective (un)conscious,” and “disavowal,” this paper investigates the shaping process of “the post-colonial subject” who both denies and desires the other's culture. All this argues that the subject possessing a collective conscience and emotion toward the other is cultural production through the development process of the mass media, the arena for the struggles and contradictions of complicated conditions responsible for constructing the globally, nationally, and locally penetrating concept of the “nation.”

This paper aims at discussing Max Weber's methodology, specifically based on his essay "Objectivity in Social Science and Social policy". It is well known that Max Weber made continuous efforts to construct modern social science; his Gesammelte Aufsätze zur Wissenschaftslehre are full of highly suggestive ideas and concepts for students who are interested in methodology generally. If media studies is also expected to be one of genuine social and cultural sciences, every piece of Weber's thought will be important. Every social reality is unique, concrete and infinitely rich; we cannot grasp it without constructing "ideal type" which is not real image of reality, but its edited one. It will be shown that Weber's "ideal type" is composed of three ingredients, that is, economy, value and history.

The pamphlet is one type of printed material other than books, as well as a printed act of persuasion. Newspapers remained till the 1680s as an information tool, i.e. they informed society about different events in the world but did not comment on them. But a society basically needs opportunities or channels to express its own judgments and assessments, especially of important objects. Further, we usually try to share these through personal and/or public communication. In this way, the pamphlet developed in the German society of the 16th century as a printed medium of persuasion. The distinguishable functions of newspapers and pamphlets four centuries ago resembles the distribution of various types of speech acts categorized by linguistic pragmatics. We always do various communicative acts with a text.

Community development movements, which emerged in Japan in the 1980, are believed to have contributed to regional rejuvenation through the restructuring of communities as well as through economic development. The movements originally developed under administrative leadership, however the nature of regional development has changed drastically due to the decentralization of Japan's political system and socio-economic changes in Japan's rural society. Changes were further accelerated by the rise of nonprofit activities in the late 1990s. This article tries to analyze the types of experts involved in these movements. Three typical types of experts are found in community development, and their development stages are described. To prevent over-involvement by such experts, the author proposes the idea of flexible expertise and limited liability experts based on an intensive review of literature and an analysis of cases.

This article examines the effectiveness of defining public space in subway stations in Mexico City as media, especially for the purpose of nation-building or Mexicanization. The stations are natural places for people to congregate and many are adorned with murals, objet, replicas of pre-Hispanic ruins and walls, and even expositions. These displays constitute an important example of historical representations of the nation and national culture. The paper examines the function of these public spaces as a vehicle for sending messages to commuters and passengers, and also the processes of self-representation of Mexican people.
