Japanese folklore is said to be a young discipline constructed by agricultural politician Kunio Yanagita. However, its content is a new national studies (新国学), a history of the common people, and an agricultural policy for the well-being of people. Each has a variety of origins. The research methodology of Japanese folklore is really simple, as it is expressed as “walking, seeing, listening”, but it is the accumulation of the experience of folklore scholars so far. It is very useful in discovering the hidden value of rural areas. In this report, we discuss the usefulness of folk research based on the case of regional resource survey in rural Indonesia.

In this study, the process of generational change and the support system for successors in a small-scale community-based farming corporation in a hilly and mountainous area are considered. For this purpose, several interviews were conducted with the successors and other people concerned. As a result of the analysis, the following points about generational change were revealed. First, in order to secure successors from within the community, it is necessary to provide them with opportunities to be involved in agriculture from an early age. Second, after securing successors, management resources should be concentrated to provide a friendly working environment for them. Third, generational change is usually accompanied by a long period of time for successors. However, more time is needed for tasks where experience is required. Therefore, support from former manager and executives is necessary to continue after a generational change.

Tea farming can be classified into three main categories. In the first category, tea farms produce only fresh leaves; in the second, tea farms produce fresh leaves and process them in tea factories owned by them; and in the third, tea farms produce fresh leaves and participate in processing activities managed by tea farmer cooperatives. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between advantageous tea farming types and the environment surrounding tea farms in Kikugawa region, applying mixed integer programming. The main findings are as follows: (1) if the tea price decreases, the third tea farming type becomes more advantageous, (2) for the farms who can sell processed leaves at a price1.2 times higher than their usual price, the second type is the most advantageous.

With the increasing agricultural damage caused by monkeys, certain countermeasures have been adopted on the basis of existing knowledge. However, the local people’s reaction to how these reactions affect the continuation of the measures is not clear.Through interviews of 19 local people, this study provides an example of victim consciousness in Sasayama city, Hyogo, where measures are taken to control the damage caused by monkeys. In this example, the factors influencing victim consciousness include the ownership of the crops, the amountof crops eaten, and whether the damage is indirect or direct. Mere recognition that monkeys cause damage does not lead to damage-control measures; these measures are adopted when there is direct damage. However, it is possible that these measures continue to be applied because the farmers enjoy interacting with the monkeys. Therefore, providing such ideas as enjoying the interaction with monkeys is needed, and to find regional values as leading model town for monkey damage measures.

This paper examines the sociological factors in the in-situ conservation of traditional varieties of sorghum in the Yamato Highlands, Nara prefecture. In village A, red sorghum is still grown to color red bean rice, an auspicious food used in celebrations. A village enterprise dedicated to food processing plays a key role in red sorghum production. Elderly females grow this crop to dye other products bright red, the color favored by fellow villagers. In the adjacent village B, which has no enterprises, the same red sorghum is grown by some households but strictly for domestic consumption. In both cases, social relations based on reciprocity within the neighborhood and family are important factors in maintaining this kind of traditional food and crop.

1) East Asia and East Europe are two major areas where small scale farmers had been created by dividing large scale land ownership.2) In East Europe where the large scale farm management had been dominant, the land reform had destroyed the traditional farm management and productivity and it had necessitated the other adjustments of creating group farming just after the land reform. But in East Asia where small scale management had been prevailing, the small scale land ownership created by land reform has become prevailing as own land farming system.3) It was Japan that the land reform had functioned most efficiently as the policy to enforce the small scale management among East Asia. It was due to the conditions of (1) the managerial and political growth of the small scale farmers group, (2) appearance of agricultural policy makers who had aimed to implement the land reform, and (3) combination of land reform plan and productivity enhancement scheme under the war time regime.

The aim of this paper is to indicate the past, present and future of fruit and vegetables marketing in Janan.Agricultural cooperatives mainly lead the fruit and vegetables marketing but the share of cooperatives in frult is a little bit decreasing recently. Fruit and vegetables marketing is basically carried out by primary cooperatives, while the federation of prefectural cooperatives coordinates and supports them.In addition to shipment expense-saving strategy, supply adjustment strategy rose at one time but nowadays the commercial value improvement strategy is more emphasized to meet consumers' expectations. Furthermore, whether through wholesale market route or not, vertical cordination with buyers is spreading gradually.The market structure of fruit and vegetables possesses characteristics of many sellers and lack of product differentiation. Concentration degree of buyers will rise as the share of supermarket goes up.Therefore, orderly marketing, improvement of commercial value, sales promotion and shipment expense-saving are important factors for the competitive strategy, while horizontal cooperation, reduction of information gap and strength of transaction continuation power are important factors for the bargaining strategy for fruit and vegetables marketing.These strategies must be executed totally. Improvement of commercial value, bargaining power and sales promotion are especially important because the level of consumption and the share of supermarkets are rising and internationalization is developing.

In this paper, we analyze the skill characteristics and extension system of wild vegetable farm groups. As such, we conduct a case study of a wild vegetable farm group in the Mamurogawa agricultural cooperative, and focus on related group activities skill extension. As wild vegetable farms are required specific skills, skill extension is related to small improvement activities in wild vegetable farm groups. Furthermore, the cultivation skill of wild vegetables is a difficult technique of this extension. However, a skill is shared and extended among members of similar qualities.

This study examines the technical details and trends of plant breeding technologies by analyzing patent applications. The study uses text mining for patent application date of Monsanto and Syngenta from 2000 to 2017 for the following results. First, there has been rapid improvement in genome editing technologies, which enable the generation of new traits from endogenous genes. Especially, the two companies focus on R&D in genome control and regulation, which are necessary techniques in using genome editing technologies. Second, there has been a rapid increase in plant varieties with environmental tolerances to drought, cold, and nitrogen to counter the effects of climate change.

The purpose of this paper is to show the dietary situation (eating alone or not) of elderly individuals (aged over 70 years) in Japan, using the Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities and to clarify the reasons. We found that 32% of these individuals eat lunch alone, and 22% eat dinner alone. Furthermore, some aged people living alone eat in someone’s company, because (1) their children live near them, (2) they receive long-term care for more than 4 days a week, or (3) they work longer or engage in more social activities than the ones eating alone.
