The maturation process and age in days of female Pacific saury Cololabis saira (Brevoort) in the central North Pacific Ocean were examined based on histological observations and otolith daily growth increments. The maturation process of Pacific saury used in this study (243-342mm in knob length) was divided into 6 stages: early yolk vesicle stage, late yolk vesicle stage, yolk formation stage, maturation stage, atretic stage I, and atretic stage II. Atretic stage fish were considered to be post-spawning as many degenerated oocytes were observed. The large size group (more than 296mm), in which fish were more than 1.5 years old as estimated from daily growth increments in otoliths, contained spawning and post-spawning individuals, although all individuals from the medium size group (241-295mm), from 10 months to 1 year and 3 months old, were immature. Since post-spawning fish were seen to have recovered their initial condition factors, it is suggested that they survive beyond the first spawning season. Based on observations of asynchronously developing oocytes, it is considered that Pacific saury spawn several times during a single spawning season.

The binding position as well as the number of docosahexaenoic (DHA) moieties in tuna and in bonito orbital fat triglycerides (TG) were investigated. DHA was dominantly bound in the sn-2 position. The most abundant TG molecular species was 1 (or 3)-palmitoy1-2, 3 (or 1)-di-doosahexaenoin. This molecular species was at most less than 8% in TG fraction. DHA was distributed to many kinds of molecular species, mostly in triacid type and diacid TGs. Tridocosahexaenoin was present in a trace amount. When tuna and bonito orbital fats were each randomized, both TGs could be easily discerned by their molecular species pattern. It was concluded that the basic TG molecular species pattern of bonito orbital fat matches that of the tuna, and that these can be substituted for each other as a valuable resource.

The auditory threshold levels of walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma (Pallas) were measured in order to determine the optimum conditions for marine ranching utilizing underwater sound. The auditory characteristics of walleye pollock were determined by heart beat conditioning using 8 frequencies of pure tone stimuli from 60 to 1, 000Hz coupled with an electric shock. Pure tone conditioning stimuli were presented to the fish for 5 seconds with a 0.1 second 12V DC electric shock applied 3 seconds after the start of the sound projection. The positive response to the pure tone stimulus of the conditioned fish consisted of an inhibition of one or more heartbeats. Results show that tested walleye pollock are sensitive to pure tones in the frequency range from 60 to 1kHz, with greatest sensitivity in the range from 120 to 200Hz. At the most sensitive frequencies, the mean thresholds were between 97.7 and 100.2dB (re 1μPa) under a background noise level between 55 and 75dB (re 1μPa/√Hz). Hearing ability declined gradually with increasing frequency above 400Hz. The upper limit of audible frequency is believed to be about 1kHz.
