The tree Ilex dimorphophylla Koidz.(Aquifoliaceae)is a vulnerable species that is endemic to the summit of Mt. Yuwan on Amamioshima Island, Japan. This plant hows characteristic leaf dimorphism, which increases its horticultural value, and many individuals have been illegally removed from the natural habitat. We examined the umber of shoots, leaf morphology and plant size of the species in the natural habitat. Based on field observation for two years, we found 84 shoots, of which 32(38.1%)had entire mature leaves, whereas 52(61.9%)had only serrate juvenile leaves. Majority of the examined shoots surveyed fell into the smallest size classes : < 100 cm in eight(ca. 45%)and < 25 mm in diameter at the trunk base(ca. 60%). Leaf dimorphism was clearly demarcated in trees at 130―210 cm in height and 15―27 mm in diameter at the trunk base.

Taraxacum maruyamanum is a diploid dandelion endemic to the Oki Islands, western Japan. Morita(1995)regarded this dandelion as a subspecies of T. platycarpum. Taraxacum maruyamanum, however, is characterized by elongate, lanceolate or broadly lanceolate and hardly corniculate outer bracts of involucres. These characters are remarkably distant from the geographic trends of morphological variation in T. platycarpum s. lat. Taraxacum maruyamanum, therefore, should be treated as a distinct species.

This study was undertaken to describe and discuss the dispersal by ocean currents and the distribution of Ipomoea pes-caprae in the Japanese mainland. Frequency and growth of the seedlings from the sea-borne seeds were observed in Nagasaki Prefecture where the tropical drift fruits and seeds were the most frequent in Japan except the Ryukyu Islands. Based on my field observations and new records, a distribution map was constructed. More than 500 seedlings from the sea-borne seeds are estimated every year on beaches of Japanese mainland beyond the producing area where the plant passes the winter and completes the life cycle. The distribution of the producing area is expanded to the north. This may be due to the global warming.
