Extroversion has long been regarded as a quality that facilitates language learning because extroverted individuals tend to have willingness to speak out and interact. This, however, has not been confirmed by empirical research conducted in the past which mainly investigated the relationship between extroversion and English proficiency. In this study Japanese high school students' English proficiency as assessed by a standard English test and in interviews was correlated with extroversion scores assessed through a personality indicator. The result supported the past research, indicating no correlation between the two. In a study of the same high school students' intercultural adjustment in the U.S., extroversion was found to play an important role: extroversion was a strong indicator of the students' satisfaction in the interpersonal relationships with American friends and host families as well as self-assessed English communication effectiveness. It was also found that extroverted students used social skills more frequently and created opportunities to interact with Americans more than introverted students. Although no direct correlation between personality and language acquisition was examined, the above results imply the role of extroversion in determining quality and quantity of intercultural interpersonal contact which could affect the language learning process. An implication of these findings to oral communication teaching is discussed.

本研究の目的は、大学学生寮の中で留学生と日本人学生が構築する対人関係を、留学生の語りを通して明らかにすることである。データ収集方法として、有志留学生8名それぞれに滞在期間3ヶ月目と8ヶ月目の時点で半構造化面接を行なった。面接では、寮での日本人学生との対人関係を中心に質問をした。逐語録の分析には、木下(2007)を参考に、グラウンディッド・セオリー・アプローチで用いられる方法を利用した。その結果、滞在期間3ヶ月目では、留学生は日本人学生との対人関係構築への期待を抱いていたのにも関わらず、8ヶ月目になると、留学生は日本人学生コミュニティへの不参加を表明していることが分かった。本稿では、その理由として、日本人学生の上下関係の文化的実践に注目し、寮における異文化間対人関係の様相を考察する。

日本の経済力の高まりと国際化へのかけ声を背景に,海外に留学する大学生や高校生の数は年々増加している。学位やディプロマ取得を目的とした正規留学以外にも,語学研修を主目的とした短期,長期留学共にプログラムは多様化しているが,それらの参加者への影響については系統だった調査が少ないのが現状である。著者は,アメリカに一年間留学した日本の高校生の異文化体験の実態と意義を明らかにすることを目的に,1987年度より,主に面接,質問紙,英語能力テスト等を用い多面的調査を実施している。本論では総合的な調査の一環として行った英語伝達能力の習得に関する予備的研究の報告をする。

This paper reviews research on the emotional experiences of bilingual speakers from a cultural psychological perspective, using the framework of emotional scripts that are socially shared and acquired as cultural models. The experience of bilinguals tells us that they switch from one language to another depending on numerous factors including relative proficiency in the two languages and the history of acquisition, perceived emotionality as well as the affective resources offered by the languages. Secondly, the possibility of acquisition of emotional scripts by L2 learners through intercultural contact experiences is considered based on past research. Finally, educational implications are discussed.

The present study investigated the effects of reducing the number of options per item on psychometric characteristics of a Japanese EFL university entrance examination. A four-option multiple-choice reading test used for entrance screening at a university in Japan was later converted to a threeoption version by eliminating the least frequently endorsed option in each item, and was given to a separate group. Responses to the two tests indicated that using three options instead of four did not significantly change the mean item facility or the mean item discrimination. Distractor analyses revealed that whether four or three options were provided, the actual test-takers'responses spread, on the average, over about 2.6 options per item, that the mean number of functioning distractors was much lower than 2, and that reducing the least popular option had only a minimal effect on the performance of the remaining options. These results suggested that three-option items performed nearly as well as their four-option counterparts.

As Dornyei and Schmidt (2001) suggest, "L2 motivation research has reached maturity" and "the motivational basis of second language acquisition is a fertile ground for investigation" (p. ix). Unfortunately, however, in Japan we have not seen L2 motivation studies embodying variety of topics and methods so far. Our aim is thus to offer some of the current thinking on L2 motivation and to outline a number of exciting and potentially fruitful future research directions. First, we discuss what motivation is, why we work on motivation, and what we should pay attention to in motivation research. Then, we spotlight motivation research from three different perspectives (socio-cultural/situational, social constructivist, and social-psychological) that have received little attention in L2 motivation field in Japan.
