The purpose of the present study was to examine the quality of statistical testing in foreign language teaching research in Japan. We reviewed t-tests, X2-tests and ANOVAs reported in the articles published in Language Education & Technology (LET) from vol. 38 to vol. 49, and calculated the post-hoc statistical power of each test. The findings of the present study were summarized as follows: (a) the sample size of most of the studies in LET ranged from 20 to 60, (b) the median of the effect sizes (in the case of t-tests) showed middle to large levels (d = 0.40–0.80), but (c) the statistical powers of many studies signified severely low levels (almost the 80% of the two-sample t-tests failed to show the statistical power greater than .80). The tendencies were quite likely to have originated chiefly from the inappropriate designs of the experiments or surveys, especially, mismatches between the targeted effect size and the actual sample size. We assert the importance of setting proper sample sizes based on a priori power analysis and precision analysis.

This paper aims to highlight the problem of multiple significance testing with several dependent variables (i.e., items or tests). In many research. papers, researchers report the results of multiple significance testing without realizing they are committing Type I error, in which it can be erroneously concluded that there is a statistically significant difference, when in fact there is no statistical difference. In order to address this problem, a series of Monte Carlo simulation studies were carried out. Five artificial sets of dependent variables for two groups of subjects were generated in the simulation. Three types of data sets which varied in their degrees of intercorrelations (r=.00, r=.50, r=.95, respectively) were then compared. The results indicate that multiple significance testing, with several dependent variables, inflate Type I error, and thus caution should be exercised to control the experimentwise error rate. Implications for the strategies for controlling Type I error rate are then discussed.

本研究では,サンプルサイズが小さい場合に使用される統計的検定の比較を行った。特に,従来から使用されることが多いパラメトリック検定とノンパラメトリック検定,そして,並べ替え検定とフィッシャーの正確確率検定という正確なp値を得ることができる方法を比較することを目的とした。

現代の日本人における不眠症の有病率は、成人で約20%と言われている。睡眠治療にはベンゾジアゼピン系睡眠薬が主に使用されているが、より依存性が低い非ベンゾジアゼピン系睡眠薬として、ゾピクロン錠やエスゾピクロン錠が広く使用されている。両剤はともに味覚異常を示すことで知られているが、エスゾピクロン錠は、ラセミ体であるゾピクロンから、活性を有するS体のみを精製して開発されており、明確な違いは明らかではない。そこで本研究では、両剤の苦味を比較することを目的に検討を行った。その結果、苦味特異的な物質に反応を示す味覚センサ試験で、ゾピクロン錠がより強い苦味を示した。さらに健康成人を対象としたヒト官能試験でも、ゾピクロン錠でより強い苦味を示すことが認められた。本検討は薬剤の苦味強度を示すものであるが、エスゾピクロン錠に比べてゾピクロン錠がより強い苦味強度を有する可能性が示唆された。

本研究は,いつでもどこでもだれでも,教育用例文コーパスを使って,DDL(Data-Driven Learning,データ駆動型学習)が実施可能なように,教育用コーパス・検索ツール・教材を搭載したDDLオープンプラットフォームを開発し,その活用と普及を図ることを目的とする。具体的には,平成25‐28年度科研において開発した第Ⅰ期開発版のデータ駆動型英語学習支援サイトSCoRE(Sentence Corpus of Remedial English)に基づき,1)教育用例文コーパスの増強,2)検索ツールの高度化・軽量化,3)DDL実践・効果検証・DDL普及活動の3項目の研究を行い,成果を逐次,国内外に発信することである。平成29年度の研究実績について述べる。1) 教育用例文パラレルコーパスの増強:第Ⅰ期開発版の英語例文・日本語訳データの見直しを行い,例文の増補・改訂,および,インターフェースの改良を加えた第4次開発版SCoREを公開した。2) 検索ツールの高度化・軽量化:SCoREツールのひとつ,「適語補充問題」ツールのログ機能を強化し,教育利用の促進を図った。さらに,ユーザの利便性を考慮し,新たに携帯端末用検索ツール「m-SCoRE」を開発・公開した。3) DDL教材の開発・実践・効果検証:上記1),2)の教育現場への応用研究として,外国語学習者がDDLに取り組むための教材や効果検証テストを開発し,データ駆動型英語学習支援サイトSCoRE(http://www.score-corpus.org/)に収録した。当該サイトは,オープンプラットフォームであり,教師・研究者が自由に収録データをダウンロードできる。大学生および高専生を対象としたDDL指導実践授業の評価と教育効果の検証を行った。研究成果として,雑誌論文を5件公刊し,6件の学会発表を行った。

This study reviewed three representative aspects (themes, methods, and outcomes) of the published articles in ARELE, volumes 1 to 24. The review of 450 ARELE articles revealed the following results: (a) the 24 ARELE volumes could be divided into two periods (the first 12 and the second 12); (b) articles in each period have characteristic words to represent the themes peculiar to the period; (c) research themes have shifted from teaching to learning, with reading, vocabulary, assessment/testing, and motivation coming to the forefront; (d) articles are predominantly empirical studies, targeting learners at secondary and tertiary levels, and hypothesis generating, with a quantitative approach, while intervention studies are not common; (e) medium strength of effect size was obtained with a meta-analytical approach; (f) the effect size decreases toward more recent volumes, which may be a sign of theoretical refinement; (g) the statistical power of most studies is lower than it should be. A number of suggestions are offered for improving the quality of future research practice.

本研究では人文系女子大学生の語彙学習方略を調査し,それらの方略が学習成果とどのように関連しているかを明らかにすることを目的とした。まず,139人の実験参加者に質問紙調査を行い,どのような語彙学習方略を使用しているのか,また,役に立つと思っている方略と,実際に使用している方略との間に差はあるのかを調べた。次に使用している語彙学習方略と,習熟度指標としてのTOEICおよび語彙サイズとの相関を調べた結果,辞書使用方略,語の構造利用,メタ認知方略群が弱いながら有意な相関があることが確認された。使用している語彙学習方略と学習成果によるクラスター分析では,4つのグループが現れた。この研究から,さまざまな習熟度,語彙学習方略を行う学習者に効果的な語彙指導を行う際に有用な結果が得られたといえる。
