Developments in music printing by letterpresses were studied using several historical scores, i.e., score I printed by Gardano in Venice in 1575, score II printed by Gardano in Venice in 1679, score III printed by Ch. Ballard in Paris in 1679, score IV printed by Endter in Nuremberg in 1682, score V printed by F. Heptinstall in London in 1697, and score VI printed by Breitkopf & H ä rtel in Leipzig in 1799. Score I was printed using fonts similar to those invented by Ottaviano dei Petrucci in 1525. About 100 years after score I was printed, there were many differences in the scores in different cities (score II to V). The differences were studied to develop the next font, a mosaic-type font. Finally, the characteristics and typesetting of the mosaic-type font were clarified using score VI.

In music printing, some steps of engraving, such as layout, marking, etc., were believed to have succeeded from initial lithography processes. Music printing by engraving in the beginning of the 19th century was studied to clarify the backdrop technique of lithography, by using a music score from the Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonata no. 21 opus 53, which was printed by the Bureau des arts et d'industri in Vienna in 1805. By analyzing the score, some engraving techniques in music printing could be clearly understood, i.e., punch patterns of music note, order of patterning, rough positioning of notes, re-cutting of lines, corrections of note, etc. Ledger lines were undetectable in the plate-making technique.

庄内地方(鶴岡と酒田)・会津若松市・長岡市は絵蝋燭の産地として知られている。これらの地域で絵蝋燭業者や技術者に聞き取り調査を行い、伝統的絵蝋燭の図案を中心にその歴史や製造における特徴や利用法を研究した。絵蝋燭は18世紀中頃に庄内地方と会津で開発された。会津若松には3つの絵蝋燭のタイプがあった。一つは、牡丹や菊の絵が描かれた日本画タイプ、一つは、筆・笥・巻物の形に似せた細工蝋燭、あと一つは蒔絵タイプである。庄内の伝統絵蝋燭は御所車の図柄で代表される日本画タイプである。ー方長岡の絵蝋燭は会津若松より伝播したといわれ、牡丹・菊・甕・台の図柄で特徴すけられる。この中で、甕と台は会津若松で忘れられた図柄である。いずれの産地の伝統的絵柄は花篭模様が多<、磁器の影響が示唆される。これらの地域では、江戸時代より仏事に絵蝋燭が使用される。これが絵蝋燭製造の統いた理由である。

Using standard color chips for architecture, effects of lightness on perceived qualities were studied by means of a rank test (qualites : gloss, transparency, deepness, thickness, metallic, planarity, and silkyness senses). A few qualities increased (transparency, planarity and silkyness senses) and the others decreased with increasing the Munsell lightness value (deepness, thickness and metallic senses) . The effect of hue on the percieved qualities were also detectable in the deepness and silkyness senses.

Shonai district (Tsuruoka and Sakata cities), Aizuwakamatsu city, and Nagaoka city are well known as production places of Japanese traditional picture drawn candles, so-called "E-ROUSOKUs". Now a day, because only five craft men produce the E-ROUSOKU by traditional method, it is afraid to lose the technology. I studied its history, manufacturing technique, and uses. They were developed until the middle of 18th century in Shonai district. The technique of the production passed from Aizuwakamatsu city to Nagaoka city. Etsukeshi's, painters, drew typical pictures on the candle surface after Gojiru coating. And then, the candle surface was over-coated by breached wax. The E-ROUSOKUs were used chiefly for offerings of feudal load, souvenirs, and Buddhist services in Edo-era.

Effects of color on perceived qualities of textile materials were studied by using dyed polyester chips. Six hues were investigated. Five color chips of textile with constant lightness and 4 to 5 chips with constant chromaticness were chosen in each hue. 25 Girl students were investigated their own 6 fundamental qualities by means of SD-method after demonstration of the textile chips at constant conditions. The effects of Munsell chroma and value were studied by means of correlation coefflcients and slopes of regression straight line. The lightness value affects on senses of shade of color, roughness, lightness, hardness, and the chromaticness value does on the sense of activeness.
