The aim of this article is to provide references to cognitive scientists, who are interested in learning category theory and using it in their research. This article consists of the three sections, question-and-answers on category theory, utility of category theory on cognitive science, and tutorial materials. In the question-and-answers on category theory, we answered to questions, with which beginners of category theory may come up. In the utility of category theory on cognitive science, we raised the three items of utility of category theory in building cognitive models. The learning materials share the books, slides, and videos on the web, recommended to start with.

In reading, we are often engaged to the book, lose our self-awareness, transport our-selves into the narrative world, and have deep empathy for the characters in the books. These “absorption” phenomena have been characterized and classified based on reader’s introspective report using the questionnaires. However this methodology relying on in-trospective reports alone may not be accurately enough to study the absorption: the readers in the absorption cannot reliably report their experiences, as they lose their self-awareness to some degree by definition. This motivates this study to build an al-ternative measures of absorption, which we can evaluate its reliability by its consistency across multiple subjective and objective measures of reader’s states. We conducted two experiments by employing the first author as a subject in a natural and reader friendly situation. In the first experiment, we analyzed the cross correlation between reader’s absorption ratings and statistics, CVR-R and fractal dimension, esti-mated from reader’s heart rates. In the second experiment, we analyzed the relation-ship between reader’s absorption ratings and bodily movements using the classification tree technique. The results of these two experiments suggest that the CVR-R and the fractal dimension estimated from heart rates, and the bodily movement can be used as alternative measures indicating the level of reader’s absorption.

When readers comprehend a text, they can have multiple simultaneous interpretations. Literary theories and art studies have indicated that multiple and indeterminate interpretations allow us to create novel understanding and provide us with aesthetic experiences. However, in the cognitive science field, these multiple and indeterminate interpretations have not been represented and modeled. This article proposes a way of modeling the states of multiple and indeterminate interpretations as a time series based on quantum probability theory and discusses the prospect of our approach, focusing on comprehension and aesthetic research. First, we discuss the worth of indeterminate and multiple interpretations for text comprehension and aesthetic experiences. Then, after reviewing the previous comprehension studies, we propose a model of interpretation state, including indeterminacy and multiplicity, as a superposition state based on quantum probability theory and physics. Further, we share the basis of quantum probability theory and the recent studies on quantum cognition for this proposal. Finally, we discuss the prospects of comprehension studies using our approach.

We can imagine anything — not just an object at our hand, but also something we have never seen in our life, such as a dragon, number, heaven, and so on. In this article, we discuss a potential methodology to characterize such imagination as a conscious process, which we cannot sufficiently associate to the corresponding external stimuli. As one of such conscious processes, here we take reading of text, in which the reader construct a rich imaginary world along the storyline from looking at a quite limited visual stimulus, namely just a series of letters on a text. In particular, in the state of absorption, the reader often feels oneself into the imaginary world as a character. By reviewing past research on the absorption in reading, we propose a hypothesis, in which both conscious process itself and something in the conscious experience are objects, that is defined by the consistency between its intention and extension (inductive and deductive way of definition). In this hypothesis, difference between absorption and non-absorption is considered analogously as difference in the point of view of an object in consciousness. On the basis of the prediction of this hypothesis, we discuss empirical tests on our hypothesis.

Tsuchiya & Saigo (2019) proposed the way of understanding consciousness based on category theory. In this commentary, I discussed four points about their article: 1.Validity of their treatment of the definition and model of consciousness, 2. Verifiability and novelty of their proposal using Yoneda lemma, 3. Lack of extensive review of consciousness studies, and 4. Readers' images and the unity of image.
