Geophagy (soil-eating) is one of the well-known behaviours in many primate species, but the factors influencing this behaviour have been less known. In the captive environment of Tama Zoological Park, 2 female Borneo orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) showed geophagic behaviour that was restricted to a particular site in the naturalistic outdoor enclosure. We compared the properties of the soil at this site with those of soils from 7 other different sites in the enclosure to determine the differences between the soils. To this end, we examined the landform, vegetation type, the physical and chemical characteristics of the soils at these sites. The enclosure was situated on the hillside of secondary woodland comprising Fagaceae sp. with a gently sloping ridge on the east side and valley bottoms on the west side. The site at which the animals exhibited geophagic behaviour was located at the lowest area of the valley bottoms. We found that this area was thinly covered by a herbaceous layer with Gramineae sp., and most of ground surface was bare. The soil eaten by orangutans had a low density and was highly friable, soft, and wet. Chemical analysis revealed that the soil in the enclosure had a high Ca content (70-80%) and that soils at some points in the enclosure, including the soil at the site of geophagic behaviour, had high Fe and Mg contents. The site of geophagic behaviour was located at the bottom of the valley; therefore, soil ingredients may have accumulated easily in this soil. However, we could not find any definitive chemical factors to explain the geophagic behaviour of orangutans. One possible explanation is that since the site was bare with highly friable, soft, and wet soil, the orangutans would have been able to easily eat the soil from that site.

日本動物園水族館協会に加盟している東京都,神奈川県,埼玉県にある園館のうち,日本の動物園・水族館で見かけることの多いシマウマ,ゾウ,インコ,ペンギン,ペリカン,アザラシ・アシカ,イルカなどの同じ種類の生き物が飼育されている異なる園館を選定し,実地踏査し,動物の展示や施設の工夫を,来園者の立場で評価し,各園館の展示の工夫を比較評価検討した。その結果,観覧者は生き物が至近距離で観られて当然であると考えており,そうでない場合は評価が低い,また施設のきれいさを求める傾向も高く,個体数の少ない展示に対しては低い評価を下しがちである傾向が示された。これらの観覧者の態度に対してうまく対応することで,エデュテインメント施設としての動物園・水族館は,エコツーリズム的ないし環境教育的に効果的な展示を行うことが可能となり,またそのことを通じて動物園・水族館の存在意義を明示することにつながると言える。

Sand manipulations in four captive female chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) were experimentally analysed. Every experimental session was done at the individual situation. Each individual was observed in the experimental booth under four 30min. conditions; with an experimenter and no object, with an experimenter and 16 objects, with an experimenter and 7 objects, and with no experimenter and 7 objects. In every conditions, 10kg. sand was mounted at the centre of floor in the booth. Comparing the amount of time of sand manipulations under each conditions, the conditions with an experimenter and objects facilitated chimpanzees to manipulate sand, although the small number of objects was more efficient. For the ultimate purpose of abstracting the intelligence of chimpanzee, we made the ethogram of sand manipulation. Each bout of sand manipulation observed was categorized into four contexts; relating with their own body and object, relating with only their own body, relating with only object, and specific manipulation. The cases of sand manipulation initiated with “scoop”, “drop”, “grasp”, “scrape”, and “touch” were the most popular for all contexts. Chimpanzees could spontaneously construct the triad relationship of sand (with objects), experimenter, and themselves. Apparent “pretend play” could not be observed in the present study, but some of nearly “pretend play” were observed. These observational evidences allowed us to speculate that chimpanzees can symbolically manipulate sand.

動物園で飼育されている動物が、動物福祉の達成された生活環境で暮らしている場面を来園者に展示するための施策としての環境エンリッチメントの実施および効果の評価を、動物園の飼育の現場の人間が、特別な訓練を必要とせずかつ日常業務の合間に簡便に行える方法を策定することを目指し、各種の試行実験から注目すべき行動特性について整理し、簡便な実験観察法を策定した。
