Cleavage of cellular DNA by bleomycin substantially contributes to the antitumor activity of this drug. Two characteristics are necessary for antineoplastic action of bleomycin. First, the bithiazole region of the antibiotic has an affinity for the guanine base of DNA. Second, the β-aminoalanine-pyrimidine-β-hydroxyhistidine portion of the drug is capable of oxygen activation by the complexation with Fe (II) ion. The role of the gulose-mannose group and unique interaction between the iron-coordination site and the DNA-binding site have been also indicated. Several spectroscopic data have clearly demonstrated that the bleomycin-Fe (II) complex forms a complex with either CO, C2H5NC, or NO. The “site specific oxygen radical”, produced from an active bleomycin-Fe (II) complex, would account for the action mechanism of selective DNA base cleavage by bleomycin. In addition, the inactivation mechanism of bleomycin hydrolase and important effect of the fifth axial amino group to iron-coordination on bleomycin activity have been discussed.

Tensile tests were carried out on sintered Si₃N₄ at room temperature under the ambient condition, and the influence of defects upon the fracture stress was discussed. As the surface of specimens was prepared carefully, fracture of 57 specimens out of 60 originated from the defects such as voids or inclusions which resulted from the sintering process. As a parameter to describe the size of the defect, &radic;<i>area</i> was used which is the square root of the area of a 3-dimensional defect projected to the direction of the maximum principal stress. The results obtained are as follows.<br>(1) &radic;<i>area</i> of defects which caused fracture nearly conforms to the first asymptotic distribution of the largest value and the fracture strength conforms to Weibull distribution.<br>(2) &radic;<i>area</i> is a good parameter to describe the size of the defect from the standpoint of fracture.<br>(3) Defects such as voids and inclusions act exactly as cracks of the same size.<br>(4) The fracture strength can be estimated by using the distribution of &radic;<i>area</i>, the fracture toughness and the mean grain size of Si₃N₄.

Modulation transfer function (MTF) quantitatively describes a display' s resolution characteristics. It involves two measurement methods : the impulse method and the sinusoidal method. The authors compared the two methods and showed that the sinusoidal method is the best of the two because the video circuit characteristics are involved in the results. The MTF measurement method for moving images is also investigated.

レーザーを用いてテレビ信号を16ミリカラーフィルムに録画する, レーザー録画装置を試作した.この装置を使って, カラーリバーサルフィルムやカラープリントフィルム等への録画実験を行い, レーザー録画がキネレコにくらべ画質が改善されることを示した.特に, カラープリントフィルムヘの録画は従来にない高品質のもので, フィルムの価格がキネレコに現用されているリバーサルフィルムの1/4〜1/5という運用上の利点がある.
