This paper describes the development of a guide robot for a shopping center, which attempts to build rapport with customers while providing route guidance and other shopping information. A field trial was conducted at a shopping mall for 25 days to study the possible role of a robot in a shopping center. Since a shopping center is a place where local people repeatedly visit, it is important for the robot to interact with people multiple times. Using passive RFID tags to identify customers, and using the WOZ method to overcome difficulties in speech recognition, the robot built rapport with customers through a series of interactions based on a set of four design principles. During each day of the field trial, the robot interacted with approximately 200 customers, and the robot was able to sustain customers' interest throughout multiple interactions. The robot also provided shopping information through natural conversation with the customers, and the experimental results revealed that 63 out of 235 people in fact went shopping based on advice from the robot. These results seem to demonstrate a promising potential for guide robots designed to build rapport with customers in a shopping mall.

This paper reports about an interactive humanoid robots, Robovie, that work in a science museum where visitors are supposed to study and grow interests toward science. Each visitor wore an RFID tag, and looked around exhibits in the museum. Robovie has an implemented function for an autonomous interaction as free-play [1] . Moreover, it obtains its exact position, visitors' positions, and their moving history in the museum from ubiquitous sensor networks, including RFID tag readers, recording cameras and infrared cameras. It performs exhibits-guiding by moving around to several exhibits and explaining these exhibits based on the sensor information, in addition to the freeplay interaction. We compared the effect of the exhibits-guiding and the free-play interaction under three operating conditions. As a result, the free-play interaction and exhibits-guiding contributed to promote visitors' interests for science, while Robovie mostly received higher subjective impression, which is probably due to its novelty.

ATRでは,体験共有コミュニケーションを支援する研究を行っている.ユビキタス環境下での体験共有の例として,展示会場でのインタラクションに着目した体験共有システムのプロトタイプを構築し,実証実験を行ったので紹介する.ATR is conducting research for supporting experience sharing communication. In this paper, we were talking about a prototype system of experience sharing using Ubiquitous Sensors in exhibition hall. We report the construction of a prototype system aimed to human interactions, and the result of experiments of this system.
