In the present paper, we introduce a new method by which to generate motions having flight phases such as jumping or running. Such motions are expected to expand the speed and stability of legged robots. Motions with flight phases are examined with respect to jumping, stability and implementation. A novel method of determining the Center of Mass (COM) and foot locations is proposed that is independent of the target robot actuators or assignments of joints. Moreover, the proposed method allows an on-line system to be built easily and is useful for actual robots. A one-legged jumping robot having a toe joint is built in order to demonstrate the feasibility of this method. Using the toe joint of the robot, the proposed method can reduce the angular velocities of the joints remarkably. Experiments are conducted to investigate the control of the direction, velocity and turning of the robot.

A planning method for knotting and tightening of deformable linear objects is proposed. Firstly, we briefly explain crossing state description and basic operations corresponding to crossing state transitions. Possible sequences of crossing state transitions, that is, possible manipulation processes can be generated once the initial and the objective states are given. Secondly, a method to determine grasping points and their moving direction is proposed in order to realize derived manipulation processes. Then, it is theoretically found that any knotting manipulation of a linear object placed on a table can be realized by an one-armed robot with three translational DOF and one rotational DOF. Thirdly, a planning method for tying tightly is established to complete a knot because the knot fulfills its fixing function after it is tightened. Finally, it is demonstrated that an one-armed robot system can plan and execute tying and tightening a slipknot.

Marionette system provides an intuitive teleoperation system for the difficulty controlling whole-body motion of a multi-joint robot and the complicated observation of its condition. This system employs a small robot which has similar form to a control target as an operating/displaying device, so that the device provides an operational feeling like manipulating a doll, so it is named Marionette Device. Since the characteristics of the Marionette device and the target robot are synchronized bilaterally in the system, the operation of Marionette device is reflected intuitively in the target, and the robot motion is also displayed simultaneously by the Marionette device. In this paper, we develop a humanoid type device as Marionette device in order to operate a humanoid robot HRP-2 and implement a whole-body teleoperation method. The remote walking and manipulation experiments in an unknown environment are introduced. In this experiment, the operator should guess the remote environment using a head camera view and control legs and arms by the Marionette device. We propose a new operation method for controlling foot position and leg joints with the Marionette device. It makes possible to walk by pointing a foot stamp step by step in a stable place. To show the effectiveness of the proposed system, we compare another teleoperating system which employs a joystick and a 3DCG display for control and understanding the state of remote robot. The experimental result shows effectiveness of the Marionette system and it has potential of teleoperating humanoid robots with other devices for complementing each other.

This paper reports about an interactive humanoid robots, Robovie, that work in a science museum where visitors are supposed to study and grow interests toward science. Each visitor wore an RFID tag, and looked around exhibits in the museum. Robovie has an implemented function for an autonomous interaction as free-play [1] . Moreover, it obtains its exact position, visitors' positions, and their moving history in the museum from ubiquitous sensor networks, including RFID tag readers, recording cameras and infrared cameras. It performs exhibits-guiding by moving around to several exhibits and explaining these exhibits based on the sensor information, in addition to the freeplay interaction. We compared the effect of the exhibits-guiding and the free-play interaction under three operating conditions. As a result, the free-play interaction and exhibits-guiding contributed to promote visitors' interests for science, while Robovie mostly received higher subjective impression, which is probably due to its novelty.

Robot audition is a critical technology in creating an intelligent robot operating in daily environments. To realize such a robot audition system, we have designed a missing feature theory based interface between sound source separation and automatic speech recognition (ASR) . In this interface, features distorted by speech separation are detected from input speech as missing features. The detected missing features are masked on recognition to avoid severe deterioration of recognition performance. By using the interface, we developed the robot audition system which recognizes multiple simultaneous speech. We also assess its general applicability by implementing it on three different humanoids, i.e., Honda ASIMO, SIG2, and Replie of Kyoto University. By using three simultaneous speeches as benchmarks, its general applicability was confirmed. When triphone is used and a size of vocabulary is 200 words, the average word correct of three simultaneous speech are 79.7%, 78.7%, and 82.7% for ASIMO, SIG2, and Replie, respectively.

A portable radio device with ad hoc wireless networking function is realized as a platform of various physical and informational support systems based on"Lifelog Contents"that is the records of experiences in the daily life. Lifelog should be created by collecting various information through a wireless network without putting a strain on human and environment. By attaching sensors and actuators to our radio device, they can participate in the wireless network and effectively communicate with each other. We adopted Bluetooth as wireless communication technology that has such good features as low power consumption, sufficient data throughput, high resistance to noise and so on. Since our device has flexible multihop networking functions, it can construct a large scale network. We realized a prototype of Lifelog based electric appliances operational support system with our devices. Utilization of Lifelog reduces the burden for controlling a huge amount of convoluted electric appliances by constructing the probabilistic model of user's operational behavior and predicting user's successive operations. The system gives prediction results to the user and executes operations via the wireless network. Experimental results prove that the operational system is useful and developed device is sufficient performance for Lifelog based support systems.
