The purpose of the present study was to investigate the perception regarding TAIKAN (which means the trunk or torso, including the core) exercise training among young adults. A questionnaire-based survey was performed on university students (n = 236) to clarify the relationships between exercise habits, perception of TAIKAN training exercise, and frequency of implementation of the same. The participants, who exercised regularly (30 or more min per day, 2 or more days per week, and maintaining this for more than 1 year) , had a higher proportion of understanding of TAIKAN than the participants who did not exercise. However, even most of the participants who did not exercise were aware of the word TAIKAN. The participants who exercised regularly performed TAIKAN training at a high frequency, even if they did not understand the meaning of TAIKAN. Furthermore, among the participants who understood TAIKAN, 20-30% consciously train their upper arm or thigh muscles, and 10% train their forearm or lower thigh muscles. These results suggest that although awareness of the word TAIKAN was high, regardless of presence or absence of exercise habits, its meaning might not be properly understood. Therefore, to enhance the effect of training, it is important to instruct people in the correct way of performing TAIKAN training exercises.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between cognitive skill and concentration, based on brain waves measured before and after eSports activity. Participants were twenty male collegiate students belonging to an eSports club (Mean Age ± 21.40, SD = 1.65). At first, participants were put on a simple electroencephalograph (EEG) and their psychological state at rest was measured for 2 minutes. After that, Stroop Color Word Test (SCWT) was conducted to measure their cognitive skill (execution function) before the eSports activity. In addition, after the eSports activity, SCWT was conducted again. In this study, the HAKARO series Stroop test (Digital Standard Co., Ltd.) was used to measure cognitive skill (execution function). To examine the degree of concentration during eSports activity, this study adopted a simple band-type EEG that only measures the Fp1 point as defined by the international 10-20 systems. In addition, for analyzing concentration, Sports KANSEI, which is a software for estimating the degree of concentration from the combination of raw EEG data, was used. As a result, this study indicated that cognitive skill (executive function) might be improved before and after eSports activity, and concentration might appear during eSports play. However, research on eSports is still in its accumulation stage in Japan, so further investigation might be necessary.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of experience or inexperience with weight-training under appropriate supervision on knowledge of squatting exercises among university students. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among university students who exercised regularly (30 or more min per day, 2 or more days per week, and maintaining this for more than 1 year) to clarify the relationships between their experience of weight-training under appropriate supervision, knowledge of squatting exercises, and the frequency with which they perform squatting exercises (n=309). More than half of the students who exercised regularly had never experienced weight-training under appropriate supervision. Approximately 50% of the participants performed squats periodically, even if they did not have any experience with weight-training under appropriate supervision. The participants who lacked experience with weight-training under supervision had made significantly fewer attempts to consciously train their gluteal and knee flexor muscles during squatting exercises than those who had experienced weight-training under supervision. In fact, approximately 50% of the former did not consciously train their gluteal muscles during squatting exercises at all. These results suggest that although the students performed squatting exercises periodically, those who had never experienced weight-training under supervision may not have properly understood the squatting method. Therefore, to enhance the benefits of training, people should be shown the correct method for performing training exercises and given appropriate supervision.

The purpose of this study was to develop a Japanese version of the Academic Athletic Identity Scale (AAIS-J), originally developed by Yukhymenko-Lescroart (2014) and to examine the relationship between academic athletic identity and grade point average (GPA). The participants were 251 student athletes who compete at the national collegiate level (male : 155, female : 96, age : M=20.33, SD=1.18). The Academic Athletic Identity Scale (AAIS) (Yukhymenko-Lescroart, 2014) was translated into Japanese using the back-translation method, and the reliability and validity of the AAIS-J were examined. The results indicated the reliability (internal consistency) and validity (construct validity, criterion-related validity) of the AAIS-J and illustrated the scale’s usefulness. In addition, the result of examining the relationship between academic athletic identity and GPA showed that student athletes who have a higher academic identity indicated higher GPA, and higher athletic identity was also positively associated with GPA. These results indicated both similar and different results of previous studies about the relationship between student athlete identity and GPA, thus, this study provided new knowledge about Japanese student athletes. In conclusion, this study confirmed the reliability, validity and usefulness of the AAIS-J.
