This study aimed to examine how workplace teleworking affects teamwork. Teamwork in remote situations has been studied from the perspective of virtual teams and team virtuality. Team virtuality can be classified into two aspects: (1) geographic dispersion and (2) technology use. Telework increases both geographic dispersion and technology use. On the other hand, past studies have not sufficiently examined how these two aspects affect teamwork. In this study, we examined the relationship between the two aspects of team virtuality and teamwork by analyzing two datasets, one at the individual level (Study 1, individual N=567) and the other at the team level (Study 2, team N=53). The results of Study 1 revealed that geographic dispersion was negatively associated with teamwork, while technology use was positively associated with teamwork. Study 2 showed a similar overall trend of association, although some aspects did not achieve statistical significance. Telework was positively associated with both geographic dispersion and technology use. In other words, the two aspects of team virtuality were shown to have potentially conflicting effects. Furthermore, Study 1 showed an interaction effect between these two aspects, suggesting that technology may moderate the negative effects of geographic dispersion on teamwork.

This study investigated the integrated teamwork model in organizations based on the survey data of 21 organizations, 812 teams, and 5,728 participants. First, consistent with the Input-Process-Output (IPO) model, the team-level mediating effects of “team leadership → team process → team performance” were confirmed. Next, we examined the further detailed relationships among the team-level variables. Our analysis demonstrated that relationship-oriented leadership was positively associated with daily communication, while task-oriented leadership was positively related to cooperation and goal sharing. In addition, goal sharing had a strong and positive association with team performance. Finally, we examined the interaction effect of task-oriented leadership and relation-oriented leadership. The analysis indicated a synergistic impact on which team process and performance were particularly enhanced when both were high, as assumed by the two-factor theory of leadership behavior represented by PM theory.

Many researchers have suggested team processes that enhance team performance. However, past team process models were based on crew team, whose all team members perform an indivisible temporary task. These models may be inapplicable business teams, whose individual members perform middle- and long-term tasks assigned to individual members. This study modified the teamwork model of Dickinson and McIntyre (1997) and aimed to demonstrate a whole team process that enhances the performance of business teams. We surveyed five companies (member N = 1,400, team N = 161) and investigated team-level processes. Results showed that there were two sides of team processes: “communication” and “collaboration to achieve a goal.” Team processes in which communication enhanced collaboration improved team performance with regard to all aspects of the quantitative objective index (e.g. current income and number of sales), supervisor rating, and self-rating measurements. On the basis of these results, we discuss the entire process by which teamwork enhances team performance in business organizations.

本研究では,リーダーシップの新しい関係性アプローチとしてセキュアベース・リーダーシップの可能性と独自性に着目した.107チームの調査から,セキュアベース・リーダーシップは「安全」と「探索」の2機能を加えた3因子で構成され,既存のリーダーシップ理論とも独立していることが明らかになった.さらに,セキュアベース・リーダーシップは心理的安全性を醸成し,チーム成果に結実することが明らかにされた.

This study examined how the rapid spread of telework triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic has affected organizational behavior, especially teamwork. The spread of COVID-19 in 2020 led to a significant increase in telework in Japanese companies. Since telework involves non-face-to-face communication, it may have a negative impact on teamwork. We compared the teamwork of 23 teams in an organization by conducting a pre- (January 2020) and post-survey (May 2020) during the first wave of COVID-19 in Japan. We found that the proportions of telework and team virtuality increased significantly from pre-survey to post-survey. However, the teamwork and team performance data remained almost constant. Rather, on examining the data from May 2020 (post-survey), we found that team virtuality, especially technology use, had a positive correlation with teamwork. Thus, the rapid spread of telework and team virtuality does not necessarily hamper teamwork; rather, the technology-proficient teams may have excellent team processes and high team performance.

This study investigated the relationship between team composition based on work orientation and team performance. By examining the correlation between team performance and the maximum and minimum scores for work orientation, we determined whether the score of member with the highest work orientation correlated with team performance and whether the score of those with the lowest correlated with team performance. A survey of 161 teams comprising 1400 members from five different companies was conducted. The survey results show that the minimum score significantly correlated with team performance and team processes; however, the maximum score did not. This result suggests that a team member with negative work orientation worsens the overall team performance.
