Although diabetes is associated with an increased risk of various diseases, including cancer and infectious diseases, no definitive cure has yet been found. Long-term treatment for blood glucose control significantly reduces the QOL. Pancreatic β-cells are the only cells that can lower blood glucose levels by secreting insulin. Therefore, maintaining insulin-secreting β-cells is crucial in preventing the progression of diabetes and improving the QOL. We have investigated the mechanisms for the regulation of insulin secretion, the prevention of β-cell apoptosis, and the increase in β-cell mass. In particular, we have elucidated the involvement of type I diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) in the regulation of insulin secretion and the effects of nitric oxide (NO) signaling and natural products in suppressing β-cell death. In addition, we have elucidated the function of DGKδ as a suppressor of β-cell proliferation. This review introduces the findings of our study leading to development of novel anti-diabetic therapeutics that targets pancreatic β-cells.

Weight of the heart and its various components (muscular and non muscular portions) was measured in 138 specimens. Average heart weight for Indians was comparatively less then that of western population. Difference between the average heart weights for males and females was found to be statistically significant. The heart weight was not influenced by age and body length but by the body built. A statistically significant difference was noticed in emaciated persons. Ventricular weight constituted 50 to 80 percent of the total heart weight. A close correlation between the heart weight and ventricular weight was seen. Ventricular wall thickness did not correlate well with the heart weight.

In Part I, we touched on the ancient court-lady speechs which have persisted in Daisyozi Amamonzeki nunnery. The present paper is an attempt to explain some linguistic circumstances in this nunnery. It is difficult to classify the extremely varied assertions which have been made connecting lingustic and nonlinguistic behavior. Therefore, in this paper, we will primarily ask three kinds of nonlinguistic questions : 1) What are the natures of human relation connected with Daisyozi and Imperial palace, of social circles and their manners and customs? 2) What are the year's regular functions in Daisyozi? (the Feast of the Seven Herbs of Health, Kazyo, the moonlight party and ancient customs etc.) 3) What kinds of education and recreation were done for the nuns? (the distinctive perception of public and private affairs, Kiyo and Otugi, Genzimonogatari cards and others) Thus, we intend to treat in next Parts on the correlation between some aspects of language and non-linguistic phenomena in this nunnery.

Purpose: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) clearance is essential for maintaining a healthy brain and cognition by removal of metabolic waste from the central nervous system. Physical exercise has been shown to improve human health; however, the effect of physical exercise on intrinsic CSF outflow in humans remains unexplored. The purpose of this study was to investigate intrinsic CSF outflow pathways and quantitative metrics of healthy individuals with active and sedentary lifestyles. In addition, the effect of exercise was investigated among the sedentary subjects before and after 3 weeks of physical activity.Methods: This study was performed on 18 healthy adults with informed consent, using a clinical 3-Tesla MRI scanner. We classified participants into two groups based on reported time spent sitting per day (active group: < 7 hours sitting per day and sedentary group: ≥ 7 hours sitting per day). To elucidate the effect of exercise, sedentary individuals increased their activity to 3.5 hours for 3 weeks.Results: We show that there are two intrinsic CSF egress pathways of the dura mater and lower parasagittal dura (PSD). The adults with an active lifestyle had greater intrinsic CSF outflow metrics than adults with a more sedentary lifestyle. However, after increased physical activity, the sedentary group showed improved CSF outflow metrics. This improvement was particularly notable at the lower PSD, where outflow metrics were highest among the active group.Conclusion: Our findings describe the relationship between physical activity and intrinsic CSF outflow and show a potential selective outflow pathway with increasing physical activity in the lower PSD pathway, potentially from the perivascular space or cortical venous subpial space.

The male of the rare deep-water porter crab, Dicranodromia danielae Ng & McLay, 2005 (Homolodromiidae) is reported for the first time from Mindanao in the southern Philippines. The species was previously only known from the holotype female from Panglao in central Philippines. The diagnostic male characters are described and variation in various characters documented.

Background and Objectives: Computational clinical trial (CCT) in the field of laser medicine promotes clinical application of novel laser devices, because this trial carried out based on numerical modeling of laser-tissue interactions and simulation of a series of treatment process. To confirm the feasibility of the computational clinical trial of skin treatment with a novel picosecond laser, this paper presents an evaluation method of the safety. Study Design/Materials and Methods: In this method, the light propagation and thermal diffusion process after ultrashort light pulse irradiation to a numerical skin model is calculated and the safety based on the photothermal damage is evaluated by computational modeling and simulation. As an example, the safety of a novel picosecond laser device was examined by comparing with several laser devices approved for clinical use. Results: The ratio of the maximum thermal damage induced by picosecond laser irradiation was 1.2 × 10-2 % at the epidermis, while that caused by approved laser irradiation was 99 % at the capillary vessels. The numerical simulation demonstrated that less thermal damage was observed compared with the approved devices. The results show the safety simulated by photothermal damage calculation was consistent with the reported clinical trials. Conclusions: This computational clinical trial shows the feasibility of applying computational clinical trials for the safety evaluation of novel medical laser devices. In contrast to preclinical and clinical tests, the proposed computational method offers regulatory science for appropriately and quickly predicting and evaluating the safety of a novel laser device.

Observations of the geomagnetic total intensity have been carried out from time to time in a possible seismic gap region in the western part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), in an attempt to trace faultlines through magnetic characteristics and also to relate the characteristics to fault activity. Here we report the results of profile measurements made across the Iznik-Mekece fault as well as our interpretation. The anomalies which we found near Iznik City are similar with the ones that have been found along the eastern part of the Iznik-Mekece fault and hence they could be interpreted in terms of a dike-like structure in the andesite zone adjacent to the fault. In this area the northern edge of the dike-like structure turns out to correspond to the faultline, providing a piece of evidence for the location of faultline. In addition, the dip angle of the dike-like structure provides information on the dip-slip constituent of the primarily right-lateral Iznik-Mekece fault.

The experiment was conducted at the field and store house of Spices Research Centre, BARI, Shibganj, Bogura, Bangladesh during 2018-20 to identify post-harvest onion bulb associated fungi in storage and to find out the effective control measures to overcome the storage loss as well as to increase shelf-life of onion bulb. The field experiment was conducted for producing bulbs of BARI Piaz-1, BARI Piaz-2, BARI Piaz-3, BARI Piaz-4 and BARI Piaz-5 which were used in store house. Six treatments viz. healthy and fresh bulb, bulb treatment with Cabriotop (0.3%), with Provax 200 WP (0.25%), with Amistar Top 325 SC (0.1%) and Autostin DF (0.2%), and control were used in store house. Aspergillus niger was the isolate of storage fungi in onion bulbs. Fungicides showed little bit effect on rotten and sprouted bulbs of all varieties on onion during the whole storage periods of control. But Autostin DF (Carbendazim) at 0.2% showed more effective among the fungicides. Summer onion varieties viz. BARI Piaz-2, BARI Piaz-3 and BARI Piaz-5 showed more than 50% rotten and sprouted bulbs at 32 DAI in storage. But winter onion varieties viz. BARI Piaz-1 and BARI Piaz-4 showed 20 - 30% rotten and sprouted bulbs at 160 DAI in storage. Among the winter varieties, BARI Piaz-4 was more stable and good compared to BARI Piaz-1. Among the summer varieties, sprouted bulbs were more than rotten bulbs, but rotten bulbs were more than sprouted bulbs in winter varieties.

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are characterized by abundant eosinophilic cytoplasmic granules. Based on the hypothesis that canine intracranial GCT is a subtype of meningioma and its cytoplasmic granules are formed through autophagy processes, histopathological and immunohistochemical examination were performed on biopsy samples from 7 cases of canine intracranial GCTs and 15 cases of conventional meningiomas. Histopathologically, 7/7 cases of GCTs involved the meninges; foci of meningothelial-like cells were observed in 3/7 cases; brain invasion was observed in 2/7 cases. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells of GCTs were positive for E-cadherin and negative for S100, cytokeratin, CD204, and β-catenin in 7/7 cases. Neoplastic cells of 15/15 cases of meningiomas were positive for E-cadherin, and negative for S100 and CD204. Immunoreactivity of meningiomas for cytokeratin and β-catenin was observed in 6/15 cases and 8/15 cases, respectively. Cytoplasmic granules of GCTs were positive for ubiquitin (5/7), p62 (5/7), and LC3 (7/7). Compared to GCTs, the ratios of ubiquitin (6/15) and p62 (3/15) positive cases were lower in meningiomas, and 15/15 cases were negative for LC3. These findings indicate that the biological natures of GCTs including anatomical location, histopathological features and immunoreactivity for E-cadherin are almost in conformity with those of meningiomas. The immunoreactivity for autophagy associated molecules may suggest the possible involvement of autophagy in cytoplasmic granule formation of canine intracranial GCTs.

3-Phenyllactic acid (PLA) is a common secondary product of Lactobacillus sp. and promotes adventitious-root formation in Azuki beans (Vigna angularis). Root promotion activity of PLA is synergistically enhanced by tryptophan (Trp). In this study, stereoisomers of PLA and Trp amide conjugates and their alkyl esters were synthesized to investigate the structure–activity relationships on root-promotion activity. The rooting activity of D-PLA-L-Trp conjugate shows more than 40 times higher than that of the mixture of D-PLA and L-Trp. Modification of PLA-Trp with ethyl ester showed the highest activity at 3,400 times of a mixture of D-PLA and L-Trp. However, L-or D-PLA-D-Trp conjugate and the isopropyl ester of PLA-Trp conjugates, both lost the root promotion activity and implicated that a requirement for steric structure for PLA related root promotion mechanism. Unlike auxin substances, which are commonly used as rooting agents that displayed high activity in low concentrations, PLA-Trp ethyl ester exhibited far less phytotoxicity at high concentration of 1 mM, despite its high rooting activity. Innovation of PLA-Trp ethyl ester may be expected for agricultural aspects with low environmental impact.

Many microorganisms have been reported to produce compounds that promote plant growth and are thought to be involved in the establishment and maintenance of symbiotic relationships. 3-Phenyllactic acid (PLA) produced by lactic acid bacteria was previously shown to promote root growth in adzuki cuttings. However, the mode of action of PLA as a root-promoting substance had not been clarified. The present study therefore investigated the relationship between PLA and auxin. PLA was found to inhibit primary root elongation and to increase lateral root density in wild-type Arabidopsis, but not in an auxin signaling mutant. In addition, PLA induced IAA19 promoter fused β-glucuronidase gene expression, suggesting that PLA exhibits auxin-like activity. The inability of PLA to promote degradation of Auxin/Indole-3-Acetic Acid protein in a yeast heterologous reconstitution system indicated that PLA may not a ligand of auxin receptor. Using of a synthetic PLA labeled with stable isotope showed that exogenously applied PLA was converted to phenylacetic acid (PAA), an endogenous auxin, in both adzuki and Arabidopsis. Taken together, these results suggest that exogenous PLA promotes auxin signaling by conversion to PAA, thereby regulating root growth in plants.

An un-named Eosamon Yeo & Ng, 2007 (Brachyura: Potamidae) specimen was discovered in the reference collection of the Natural History Museum, London. Further investigation of this freshwater crab proved it to be of interest because it is the first record of the genus from Cambodia and the male to be a hitherto undescribed Eosamon species. The new species, E. cambodiense n. sp., is here described, illustrated and compared with other congeners: E. brousmichei (Rathbun, 1904), E. paludosum (Rathbun, 1904), E. hafniensis (Bott, 1966), E. yotdomense (Naiyanetr, 1984), E. boonyaratae (Naiyanetr, 1987), E. phuphanense Naiyanetr, 1992, and E. nominathuis Yeo, 2010.
